Multipath Multiplexing for Capacity Enhancement in SIMO Wireless Systems
This paper proposes a novel and simple orthogonal faster than Nyquist (OFTN)
data transmission and detection approach for a single input multiple output
(SIMO) system. It is assumed that the signal having a bandwidth is
transmitted through a wireless channel with multipath components. Under
this assumption, the current paper provides a novel and simple OFTN
transmission and symbol-by-symbol detection approach that exploits the
multiplexing gain obtained by the multipath characteristic of wideband wireless
channels. It is shown that the proposed design can achieve a higher
transmission rate than the existing one (i.e., orthogonal frequency division
multiplexing (OFDM)). Furthermore, the achievable rate gap between the proposed
approach and that of the OFDM increases as the number of receiver antennas
increases for a fixed value of . This implies that the performance gain of
the proposed approach can be very significant for a large-scale multi-antenna
wireless system. The superiority of the proposed approach is shown
theoretically and confirmed via numerical simulations. {Specifically, we have
found {upper-bound average} rates of 15 bps/Hz and 28 bps/Hz with the OFDM and
proposed approaches, respectively, in a Rayleigh fading channel with 32 receive
antennas and signal to noise ratio (SNR) of 15.3 dB. The extension of the
proposed approach for different system setups and associated research problems
is also discussed.Comment: IEEE Transactions on Wireless Communication
Advanced receivers and waveforms for UAV/Aircraft aeronautical communications
Nowadays, several studies are launched for the design of reliable and safe communications systems that introduce Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV), this paves the way for UAV communication systems to play an important role in a lot of applications for non-segregated military and civil airspaces. Until today, rules for integrating commercial UAVs in airspace still need to be defined, the design of secure, highly reliable and cost effective communications systems still a challenging task. This thesis is part of this communication context. Motivated by the rapid growth of UAV quantities and by the new generations of UAVs controlled by satellite, the thesis aims to study the various possible UAV links which connect UAV/aircraft to other communication system components (satellite, terrestrial networks, etc.). Three main links are considered: the Forward link, the Return link and the Mission link. Due to spectrum scarcity and higher concentration in aircraft density, spectral efficiency becomes a crucial parameter for largescale deployment of UAVs. In order to set up a spectrally efficient UAV communication system, a good understanding of transmission channel for each link is indispensable, as well as a judicious choice of the waveform. This thesis begins to study propagation channels for each link: a mutipath channels through radio Line-of-Sight (LOS) links, in a context of using Meduim Altitude Long drones Endurance (MALE) UAVs. The objective of this thesis is to maximize the solutions and the algorithms used for signal reception such as channel estimation and channel equalization. These algorithms will be used to estimate and to equalize the existing muti-path propagation channels. Furthermore, the proposed methods depend on the choosen waveform. Because of the presence of satellite link, in this thesis, we consider two low-papr linear waveforms: classical Single-Carrier (SC) waveform and Extented Weighted Single-Carrier Orthogonal Frequency-Division Multiplexing (EW-SC-OFDM) waveform. channel estimation and channel equalization are performed in the time-domain (SC) or in the frequency-domain (EW-SC-OFDM). UAV architecture envisages the implantation of two antennas placed at wings. These two antennas can be used to increase diversity gain (channel matrix gain). In order to reduce channel equalization complexity, the EWSC- OFDM waveform is proposed and studied in a muti-antennas context, also for the purpose of enhancing UAV endurance and also increasing spectral efficiency, a new modulation technique is considered: Spatial Modulation (SM). In SM, transmit antennas are activated in an alternating manner. The use of EW-SC-OFDM waveform combined to SM technique allows us to propose new modified structures which exploit exces bandwidth to improve antenna bit protection and thus enhancing system performances
Using of Golden Code Orthogonal Super-Symbol in Media-Based Modulation for Single-Input Multiple-Output Schemes, Journal of Telecommunications and Information Technology, 2022, nr 2
The media-based modulation (MBM) scheme is capable of providing high throughput, increasing spectrum efficiency, and enhancing bit error rate (BER) performance of communication systems. In this paper, an MBM employing radio frequency (RF) mirrors and golden code is investigated in a single-input multiple-output (GC-SIMO) application. The aim is to reduce complexity of the system, maximize linear relationships between RF mirrors and improve spectral efficiency of MBM to in order to obtain a high data rate with the use of less hardware. Orthogonal pairs of the super-symbol in the GC scheme’s encoder are employed, transmitted via different RF mirrors at different time slots in order to achieve the full data rate and high diversity. In the results having BER of 10−5 , the GC-SIMO, MBM exhibits better performance than GD-SIMO, with the gain of approximately 7 dB and 6.5 dB SNR for 4 b/s/Hz and 6 b/s/Hz, respectively. The derived theoretical average error probability of the proposed scheme is validated with the use of the Monte Carlo simulatio
Multidimensional Index Modulation for 5G and Beyond Wireless Networks
This study examines the flexible utilization of existing IM techniques in a
comprehensive manner to satisfy the challenging and diverse requirements of 5G
and beyond services. After spatial modulation (SM), which transmits information
bits through antenna indices, application of IM to orthogonal frequency
division multiplexing (OFDM) subcarriers has opened the door for the extension
of IM into different dimensions, such as radio frequency (RF) mirrors, time
slots, codes, and dispersion matrices. Recent studies have introduced the
concept of multidimensional IM by various combinations of one-dimensional IM
techniques to provide higher spectral efficiency (SE) and better bit error rate
(BER) performance at the expense of higher transmitter (Tx) and receiver (Rx)
complexity. Despite the ongoing research on the design of new IM techniques and
their implementation challenges, proper use of the available IM techniques to
address different requirements of 5G and beyond networks is an open research
area in the literature. For this reason, we first provide the dimensional-based
categorization of available IM domains and review the existing IM types
regarding this categorization. Then, we develop a framework that investigates
the efficient utilization of these techniques and establishes a link between
the IM schemes and 5G services, namely enhanced mobile broadband (eMBB),
massive machine-type communications (mMTC), and ultra-reliable low-latency
communication (URLLC). Additionally, this work defines key performance
indicators (KPIs) to quantify the advantages and disadvantages of IM techniques
in time, frequency, space, and code dimensions. Finally, future recommendations
are given regarding the design of flexible IM-based communication systems for
5G and beyond wireless networks.Comment: This work has been submitted to Proceedings of the IEEE for possible

A super-nyquist architecture for rateless underwater acoustic communication
Thesis (S.M.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Dept. of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, 2012.This electronic version was submitted by the student author. The certified thesis is available in the Institute Archives and Special Collections.Cataloged from student-submitted PDF version of thesis.Includes bibliographical references (p. 135-136).Oceans cover about 70 percent of Earth's surface. Despite the abundant resources they contain, much of them remain unexplored. Underwater communication plays a key role in the area of deep ocean exploration. It is also essential in the field of the oil and fishing industry, as well as for military use. Although research on communicating wirelessly in the underwater environment began decades ago, it remains a challenging problem due to the oceanic medium, in which dynamic movements of water and rich scattering are commonplace. In this thesis, we develop an architecture for reliably communicating over the underwater acoustic channel. A notable feature of this architecture is its rateless property: the receiver simply collects pieces of transmission until successful decoding is possible. With this, we aim to achieve capacity-approaching communication under a variety of a priori unknown channel conditions. This is done by using a super-Nyquist (SNQ) transmission scheme. Several other important technologies are also part of the design, among them dithered repetition coding, adaptive decision feedback equalization (DFE), and multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) communication. We present a complete block diagram for the transmitter and receiver architecture for the SNQ scheme. We prove the sufficiency of the architecture for optimality, and we show through analysis and simulation that as the SNQ signaling rate increases, the SNQ scheme is indeed capacity-achieving. At the end, the performance of the proposed SNQ scheme and its transceiver design are tested in physical experiments, whose results show that the SNQ scheme achieves a significant gain in reliable communication rate over conventional (non-SNQ) schemes.by Qing He.S.M
Deep learning SIC approach for uplink MIMO-NOMA system
Abstract. Deep learning-based successive interference cancellation (DL-SIC) for uplink multiple-input multiple-output -non-orthogonal multiple access (MIMO-NOMA) system tries to optimize the users’ bit error rate (BER) and total mean square error (MSE) performance with higher order modulation schemes. The recent work of DL-SIC receiver design for users with a QPSK modulation scheme is investigated in this thesis to validate its performance as a potential alternative approach to traditional SIC receivers for NOMA users. Then, a DL-SIC receiver design for higher order modulation with less dependence on modulation order in the output layer is proposed, which enables us to decode the users with different modulation schemes. In our proposed design, we employ two deep neural networks (DNNs) for each SIC step. The system model is considered an M-antenna base station (BS) that serves two uplink users with a single antenna in the Rayleigh fading channel. The equivalent conventional minimum mean square error-based SIC (MMSE-SIC) and zero-forcing-based SIC (ZF-SIC) receivers are implemented as a baseline comparison.
The simulation results showed that the BER performance of the proposed DL-SIC receiver for both users with QPSK modulation results in a 10 dB gain between BER of 10^(-2) and 10^(-3) compared to the ZF-SIC receiver. Furthermore, the performance difference between the proposed scheme and ZF-SIC is significantly high when both users transmit with 16QAM. Overall, the proposed DL-SIC receiver performs better in all signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) regions than the equivalent ZF-SIC receivers and also aids in mitigating the SIC error propagation problem. In addition, it improves the processing latency due to the benefits of the parallelized computing architecture and decreases the complexity of traditional SIC receivers
