Wideband Spectrum Sensing for Dynamic Spectrum Sharing
The proliferation of wireless devices grows exponentially, demanding more and more data
communication capacity over wireless links. Radio spectrum is a scarce resource, and traditional
wireless networks deployed by Mobile Network Operators (MNO) are based on an exclusive
spectrum band allocation. However, underutilization of some licensed bands in time and geographic
domains has been reported, especially in rural areas or areas away from high population density
zones. This coexistence of increasingly high data communication needs and spectrum
underutilization is an incomprehensible scenario. A more rational and efficient use of the spectrum
is the possibility of Licensed Users (known as Primary Users – PU) to lease the spectrum, when
not in use, to Unlicensed Users (known as Secondary Users – SU), or allowing the SU to
opportunistically use the spectrum after sensing and verifying that the PU is idle. In this latter
case, the SU must stop transmitting when the PU becomes active.
This thesis addresses the spectrum sensing task, which is essential to provide dynamic spectrum
sharing between PUs and SUs. We show that the Spectral Correlation Function (SCF) and the
Spectral Coherence Function (SCoF) can provide a robust signal detection algorithm by exploiting
the cyclostationary characteristics of the data communication signal. We enhance the most used
algorithm to compute de SCF - the FAM (FFT Accumulation Method) algorithm – to efficiently
compute the SCF in a local/zoomed region of the support ( ; ) plane (frequency/cycle frequency
plane). This will provide the quick identification of spectral bands in use by PUs or free, in a
wideband sampling scenario.
Further, the characterization of the probability density of the estimates of the SCF and SCoF
when only noise is present, using the FAM algorithm, will allow the definition of an adaptive
threshold to develop a blind (with respect to the noise statistics) Constant False Alarm Rate
(CFAR) detector (using the SCoF) and also a CFAR and a Constant Detection Rate (CDR)
detector when that characterization is used to obtain an estimate of the background noise variance
(using the SCF).A proliferação de dispositivos sem fios cresce de forma exponencial, exigindo cada vez mais
capacidade de comunicação de dados através de ligações sem fios. O espectro radioelétrico é um
recurso escasso, e as redes sem fios tradicionais implantadas pelos Operadores de Redes Móveis
baseiam-se numa atribuição exclusiva de bandas do espectro. No entanto, tem sido relatada a
subutilização de algumas bandas licenciadas quer ao longo do tempo, quer na sua localização
geográfica, especialmente em áreas rurais, e em áreas longe de zonas de elevada densidade
populacional. A coexistência da necessidade cada vez maior de comunicação de dados, e a
subutilização do espectro é um cenário incompreensível. Uma utilização mais racional e eficiente
do espectro pressupõe a possibilidade dos Utilizadores Licenciados (conhecidos como Utilizadores
Primários – Primary Users - PU) alugarem o espectro, quando este não está a ser utilizado, a
Utilizadores Não Licenciados (conhecidos como Utilizadores Secundários – Secondary Users - SU),
ou permitir ao SU utilizar oportunisticamente o espectro após a deteção e verificação de que o PU
está inativo. Neste último caso, o SU deverá parar de transmitir quando o PU ficar ativo.
Nesta tese é abordada a tarefa de deteção espectral, que é essencial para proporcionar a partilha
dinâmica do espectro entre PUs e SUs. Mostra-se que a Função de Correlação Espectral (Spectral
Correlation Function - SCF) e a Função de Coerência Espectral (Spectral Coherence Function -
SCoF) permitem o desenvolvimento de um algoritmo robusto de deteção de sinal, explorando as
características ciclo-estacionárias dos sinais de comunicação de dados. Propõe-se uma melhoria ao
algoritmo mais utilizado para cálculo da SCF – o método FAM (FFT Accumulation Method) -
para permitir o cálculo mais eficiente da SCF numa região local/ampliada do plano de suporte
/ (plano de frequência/frequência de ciclo). Esta melhoria permite a identificação rápida de
bandas espectrais em uso por PUs ou livres, num cenário de amostragem de banda larga.
Adicionalmente, é feita a caracterização da densidade de probabilidade das estimativas da SCF e
SCoF quando apenas o ruído está presente, o que permite a definição de um limiar adaptativo,
para desenvolver um detetor de Taxa de Falso Alarme Constante (Constant False Alarm Rate –
CFAR) sem conhecimento do ruído de fundo (usando a SCoF) e também um detetor CFAR e Taxa
de Deteção Constante (Constant Detection Rate – CDR), quando se utiliza aquela caracterização
para obter uma estimativa da variância do ruído de fundo (usando a SCF)
Exploring Audio Sensing in Detecting Social Interactions Using Smartphone Devices
In recent years, the fast proliferation of smartphones devices has provided powerful and portable methodologies for integrating sensing systems which can run continuously and provide feedback in real-time. The mobile crowd-sensing of human behaviour is an emerging computing paradigm that offers a challenge of sensing everyday social interactions performed by people who carry smartphone devices upon themselves. Typical smartphone sensors and the mobile crowd-sensing paradigm compose a process where the sensors present, such as the microphone, are used to infer social relationships between people in diverse social settings, where environmental factors can be dynamic and the infrastructure of buildings can vary.
The typical approaches in detecting social interactions between people consider the use of co-location as a proxy for real-world interactions. Such approaches can under-perform in challenging situations where multiple social interactions can occur within close proximity to each other, for example when people are in a queue at the supermarket but not a part of the same social interaction. Other approaches involve a limitation where all participants of a social interaction must carry a smartphone device with themselves at all times and each smartphone must have the sensing app installed. The problem here is the feasibility of the sensing system, which relies heavily on each participant's smartphone acting as nodes within a social graph, connected together with weighted edges of proximity between the devices; when users uninstall the app or disable background sensing, the system is unable to accurately determine the correct number of participants.
In this thesis, we present two novel approaches to detecting co-located social interac- tions using smartphones. The first relies on the use of WiFi signals and audio signals
to distinguish social groups interacting within a few meters from each other with 88% precision. We orchestrated preliminary experiments using WiFi as a proxy for co-location between people who are socially interacting. Initial results showed that in more challenging scenarios, WiFi is not accurate enough to determine if people are socially interacting within the same social group. We then made use of audio as a second modality to capture the sound patterns of conversations to identify and segment social groups within close proximity to each other. Through a range of real-world experiments (social interactions in meeting scenarios, coffee shop scenarios, conference scenarios), we demonstrate a technique that utilises WiFi fingerprinting, along with sound fingerprinting to identify these social groups. We built a system which performs well, and then optimized the power consumption and improved the performance to 88% precision in the most challenging scenarios using duty cycling and data averaging techniques.
The second approach explores the feasibility of detecting social interactions without the need of all social contacts to carry a social sensing device. This work explores the use of supervised and unsupervised Deep Learning techniques before concluding on the use of an Autoencoder model to perform a Speaker Identification task. We demonstrate how machine learning can be used with the audio data collected from a singular device as a speaker identification framework. Speech from people is used as the input to our Autoencoder model and then classified against a list of "social contacts" to determine if the user has spoken a person before or not. By doing this, the system can count the number of social contacts belonging to the user, and develop a database of common social contacts. Through the use 100 randomly-generated social conversations and the use of state-of-the-art Deep Learning techniques, we demonstrate how this system can accurately distinguish new and existing speakers from a data set of voices, to count the number of daily social interactions a user encounters with a precision of 75%. We then optimize the model using Hyperparameter Optimization to ensure that the model is most optimal for the task. Adaptive Coded Modulation Classification and Spectrum Sensing for Cognitive Radio Systems. Adaptive Coded Modulation Techniques for Cognitive Radio Using Kalman Filter and Interacting Multiple Model Methods
The current and future trends of modern wireless communication systems place heavy demands on fast data transmissions in order to satisfy end users’ requirements anytime, anywhere. Such demands are obvious in recent applications such as smart phones, long term evolution (LTE), 4 & 5 Generations (4G & 5G), and worldwide interoperability for microwave access (WiMAX) platforms, where robust coding and modulations are essential especially in streaming on-line video material, social media and gaming. This eventually resulted in extreme exhaustion imposed on the frequency spectrum as a rare natural resource due to stagnation in current spectrum management policies. Since its advent in the late 1990s, cognitive radio (CR) has been conceived as an enabling technology aiming at the efficient utilisation of frequency spectrum that can lead to potential direct spectrum access (DSA) management. This is mainly attributed to its internal capabilities inherited from the concept of software defined radio (SDR) to sniff its surroundings, learn and adapt its operational parameters accordingly. CR systems (CRs) may commonly comprise one or all of the following core engines that characterise their architectures; namely, adaptive coded modulation (ACM), automatic modulation classification (AMC) and spectrum sensing (SS).
Motivated by the above challenges, this programme of research is primarily aimed at the design and development of new paradigms to help improve the adaptability of CRs and thereby achieve the desirable signal processing tasks at the physical layer of the above core engines. Approximate modelling of Rayleigh and finite state Markov channels (FSMC) with a new concept borrowed from econometric studies have been approached. Then insightful channel estimation by using Kalman filter (KF) augmented with interacting multiple model (IMM) has been examined for the purpose of robust adaptability, which is applied for the first time in wireless communication systems. Such new IMM-KF combination has been facilitated in the feedback channel between wireless transmitter and receiver to adjust the transmitted power, by using a water-filling (WF) technique, and constellation pattern and rate in the ACM algorithm. The AMC has also benefited from such IMM-KF integration to boost the performance against conventional parametric estimation methods such as maximum likelihood estimate (MLE) for channel interrogation and the estimated parameters of both inserted into the ML classification algorithm. Expectation-maximisation (EM) has been applied to examine unknown transmitted modulation sequences and channel parameters in tandem. Finally, the non-parametric multitaper method (MTM) has been thoroughly examined for spectrum estimation (SE) and SS, by relying on Neyman-Pearson (NP) detection principle for hypothesis test, to allow licensed primary users (PUs) to coexist with opportunistic unlicensed secondary users (SUs) in the same frequency bands of interest without harmful effects. The performance of the above newly suggested paradigms have been simulated and assessed under various transmission settings and revealed substantial improvements
Ultrasonic sensor platforms for non-destructive evaluation
Robotic vehicles are receiving increasing attention for use in Non-Destructive Evaluation (NDE), due to their attractiveness in terms of cost, safety and their accessibility to areas where manual inspection is not practical. A reconfigurable Lamb wave scanner, using autonomous robotic platforms is presented. The scanner is built from a fleet of wireless miniature robotic vehicles, each with a non-contact ultrasonic payload capable of generating the A0 Lamb wave mode in plate specimens. An embedded Kalman filter gives the robots a positional accuracy of 10mm. A computer simulator, to facilitate the design and assessment of the reconfigurable scanner, is also presented. Transducer behaviour has been simulated using a Linear Systems approximation (LS), with wave propagation in the structure modelled using the Local Interaction Simulation Approach (LISA). Integration of the LS and LISA approaches were validated for use in Lamb wave scanning by comparison with both analytical techniques and more computationally intensive commercial finite element/diference codes. Starting with fundamental dispersion data, the work goes on to describe the simulation of wave propagation and the subsequent interaction with artificial defects and plate boundaries. The computer simulator was used to evaluate several imaging techniques, including local inspection of the area under the robot and an extended method that emits an ultrasonic wave and listens for echos (B-Scan). These algorithms were implemented in the robotic platform and experimental results are presented. The Synthetic Aperture Focusing Technique (SAFT) was evaluated as a means of improving the fidelity of B-Scan data. It was found that a SAFT is only effective for transducers with reasonably wide beam divergence, necessitating small transducers with a width of approximately 5mm. Finally, an algorithm for robot localisation relative to plate sections was proposed and experimentally validated
