Dispensing with channel estimation: differentially modulated cooperative wireless communications
As a benefit of bypassing the potentially excessive complexity and yet inaccurate channel estimation, differentially encoded modulation in conjunction with low-complexity noncoherent detection constitutes a viable candidate for user-cooperative systems, where estimating all the links by the relays is unrealistic. In order to stimulate further research on differentially modulated cooperative systems, a number of fundamental challenges encountered in their practical implementations are addressed, including the time-variant-channel-induced performance erosion, flexible cooperative protocol designs, resource allocation as well as its high-spectral-efficiency transceiver design. Our investigations demonstrate the quantitative benefits of cooperative wireless networks both from a pure capacity perspective as well as from a practical system design perspective
Broadcasting over the Relay Channel with Oblivious Cooperative Strategy
This paper investigates the problem of information transmission over the
simultaneous relay channel with two users (or two possible channel outcomes)
where for one of them the more suitable strategy is Decode-and-Forward (DF)
while for the other one is Compress-and-Forward (CF). In this setting, it is
assumed that the source wishes to send common and private informations to each
of the users (or channel outcomes). This problem is relevant to: (i) the
transmission of information over the broadcast relay channel (BRC) with
different relaying strategies and (ii) the transmission of information over the
conventional relay channel where the source is oblivious to the coding strategy
of relay. A novel coding that integrates simultaneously DF and CF schemes is
proposed and an inner bound on the capacity region is derived for the case of
general memoryless BRCs. As special case, the Gaussian BRC is studied where it
is shown that by means of the suggested broadcast coding the common rate can be
improved compared to existing strategies. Applications of these results arise
in broadcast scenarios with relays or in wireless scenarios where the source
does not know whether the relay is collocated with the source or with the
destination.Comment: 6 pages, presented at Allerton 201
Bilayer Low-Density Parity-Check Codes for Decode-and-Forward in Relay Channels
This paper describes an efficient implementation of binning for the relay
channel using low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes. We devise bilayer LDPC
codes to approach the theoretically promised rate of the decode-and-forward
relaying strategy by incorporating relay-generated information bits in
specially designed bilayer graphical code structures. While conventional LDPC
codes are sensitively tuned to operate efficiently at a certain channel
parameter, the proposed bilayer LDPC codes are capable of working at two
different channel parameters and two different rates: that at the relay and at
the destination. To analyze the performance of bilayer LDPC codes, bilayer
density evolution is devised as an extension of the standard density evolution
algorithm. Based on bilayer density evolution, a design methodology is
developed for the bilayer codes in which the degree distribution is iteratively
improved using linear programming. Further, in order to approach the
theoretical decode-and-forward rate for a wide range of channel parameters,
this paper proposes two different forms bilayer codes, the bilayer-expurgated
and bilayer-lengthened codes. It is demonstrated that a properly designed
bilayer LDPC code can achieve an asymptotic infinite-length threshold within
0.24 dB gap to the Shannon limits of two different channels simultaneously for
a wide range of channel parameters. By practical code construction,
finite-length bilayer codes are shown to be able to approach within a 0.6 dB
gap to the theoretical decode-and-forward rate of the relay channel at a block
length of and a bit-error probability (BER) of . Finally, it is
demonstrated that a generalized version of the proposed bilayer code
construction is applicable to relay networks with multiple relays.Comment: Submitted to IEEE Trans. Info. Theor
Cooperative Strategies for Simultaneous and Broadcast Relay Channels
Consider the \emph{simultaneous relay channel} (SRC) which consists of a set
of relay channels where the source wishes to transmit common and private
information to each of the destinations. This problem is recognized as being
equivalent to that of sending common and private information to several
destinations in presence of helper relays where each channel outcome becomes a
branch of the \emph{broadcast relay channel} (BRC). Cooperative schemes and
capacity region for a set with two memoryless relay channels are investigated.
The proposed coding schemes, based on \emph{Decode-and-Forward} (DF) and
\emph{Compress-and-Forward} (CF) must be capable of transmitting information
simultaneously to all destinations in such set.
Depending on the quality of source-to-relay and relay-to-destination
channels, inner bounds on the capacity of the general BRC are derived. Three
cases of particular interest are considered: cooperation is based on DF
strategy for both users --referred to as DF-DF region--, cooperation is based
on CF strategy for both users --referred to as CF-CF region--, and cooperation
is based on DF strategy for one destination and CF for the other --referred to
as DF-CF region--. These results can be seen as a generalization and hence
unification of previous works. An outer-bound on the capacity of the general
BRC is also derived. Capacity results are obtained for the specific cases of
semi-degraded and degraded Gaussian simultaneous relay channels. Rates are
evaluated for Gaussian models where the source must guarantee a minimum amount
of information to both users while additional information is sent to each of
them.Comment: 32 pages, 7 figures, To appear in IEEE Trans. on Information Theor
Multi-Antenna Assisted Virtual Full-Duplex Relaying with Reliability-Aware Iterative Decoding
In this paper, a multi-antenna assisted virtual full-duplex (FD) relaying
with reliability-aware iterative decoding at destination node is proposed to
improve system spectral efficiency and reliability. This scheme enables two
half-duplex relay nodes, mimicked as FD relaying, to alternatively serve as
transmitter and receiver to relay their decoded data signals regardless the
decoding errors, meanwhile, cancel the inter-relay interference with
QR-decomposition. Then, by deploying the reliability-aware iterative
detection/decoding process, destination node can efficiently mitigate
inter-frame interference and error propagation effect at the same time.
Simulation results show that, without extra cost of time delay and signalling
overhead, our proposed scheme outperforms the conventional selective
decode-and-forward (S-DF) relaying schemes, such as cyclic redundancy check
based S-DF relaying and threshold based S-DF relaying, by up to 8 dB in terms
of bit-error-rate.Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures, conference paper has been submitte
Relay-Induced Error Propagation Reduction for Decode-and-Forward Cooperative Communications
An attractive hybrid method of mitigating the effects of error propagation that may be imposed by the relay node (RN) on the destination node (DN) is proposed. We selected the most appropriate relay location for achieving a specific target Bit Error Ratio (BER) at the relay and signalled the RN-BER to the DN. The knowledge of this BER was then exploited by the decoder at the destination. Our simulation results show that when the BER at the RN is low, we do not have to activate the RN-BER aided decoder at the DN. However, when the RN-BER is high, significant system performance improvements may be achieved by activating the proposed RN-BER based decoding technique at the DN. For example, a power-reduction of up to about 19dB was recorded at a DN BER of 10-4
Relay Selection with Network Coding in Two-Way Relay Channels
In this paper, we consider the design of joint network coding (NC)and relay
selection (RS) in two-way relay channels. In the proposed schemes, two users
first sequentially broadcast their respective information to all the relays. We
propose two RS schemes, a single relay selection with NC and a dual relay
selection with NC. For both schemes, the selected relay(s) perform NC on the
received signals sent from the two users and forward them to both users. The
proposed schemes are analyzed and the exact bit error rate (BER) expressions
are derived and verified through Monte Carlo simulations. It is shown that the
dual relay selection with NC outperforms other considered relay selection
schemes in two-way relay channels. The results also reveal that the proposed NC
relay selection schemes provide a selection gain compared to a NC scheme with
no relay selection, and a network coding gain relative to a conventional relay
selection scheme with no NC.Comment: 11 pages, 5 figure
