A Fast Causal Profiler for Task Parallel Programs
This paper proposes TASKPROF, a profiler that identifies parallelism
bottlenecks in task parallel programs. It leverages the structure of a task
parallel execution to perform fine-grained attribution of work to various parts
of the program. TASKPROF's use of hardware performance counters to perform
fine-grained measurements minimizes perturbation. TASKPROF's profile execution
runs in parallel using multi-cores. TASKPROF's causal profile enables users to
estimate improvements in parallelism when a region of code is optimized even
when concrete optimizations are not yet known. We have used TASKPROF to isolate
parallelism bottlenecks in twenty three applications that use the Intel
Threading Building Blocks library. We have designed parallelization techniques
in five applications to in- crease parallelism by an order of magnitude using
TASKPROF. Our user study indicates that developers are able to isolate
performance bottlenecks with ease using TASKPROF.Comment: 11 page
Task mapping on a dragonfly supercomputer
The dragonfly network topology has recently gained traction in the design of high performance computing (HPC) systems and has been implemented in large-scale supercomputers. The impact of task mapping, i.e., placement of MPI ranks onto compute cores, on the communication performance of applications on dragonfly networks has not been comprehensively investigated on real large-scale systems. This paper demonstrates that task mapping affects the communication overhead significantly in dragonflies and the magnitude of this effect is sensitive to the application, job size, and the OpenMP settings. Among the three task mapping algorithms we study (in-order, random, and recursive coordinate bisection), selecting a suitable task mapper reduces application communication time by up to 47%
Analysis of a benchmark suite to evaluate mixed numeric and symbolic processing
The suite of programs that formed the benchmark for a proposed advanced computer is described and analyzed. The features of the processor and its operating system that are tested by the benchmark are discussed. The computer codes and the supporting data for the analysis are given as appendices
