    The developmental dynamics of terrorist organizations

    We identify robust statistical patterns in the frequency and severity of violent attacks by terrorist organizations as they grow and age. Using group-level static and dynamic analyses of terrorist events worldwide from 1968-2008 and a simulation model of organizational dynamics, we show that the production of violent events tends to accelerate with increasing size and experience. This coupling of frequency, experience and size arises from a fundamental positive feedback loop in which attacks lead to growth which leads to increased production of new attacks. In contrast, event severity is independent of both size and experience. Thus larger, more experienced organizations are more deadly because they attack more frequently, not because their attacks are more deadly, and large events are equally likely to come from large and small organizations. These results hold across political ideologies and time, suggesting that the frequency and severity of terrorism may be constrained by fundamental processes.Comment: 28 pages, 8 figures, 4 tables, supplementary materia

    Performance comparison of single-precision SPICE Model-Evaluation on FPGA, GPU, Cell, and multi-core processors

    Automated code generation and performance tuning techniques for concurrent architectures such as GPUs, Cell and FPGAs can provide integer factor speedups over multi-core processor organizations for data-parallel, floating-point computation in SPICE model-evaluation. Our Verilog AMS compiler produces code for parallel evaluation of non-linear circuit models suitable for use in SPICE simulations where the same model is evaluated several times for all the devices in the circuit. Our compiler uses architecture specific parallelization strategies (OpenMP for multi-core, PThreads for Cell, CUDA for GPU, statically scheduled VLIW for FPGA) when producing code for these different architectures. We automatically explore different implementation configurations (e.g. unroll factor, vector length) using our performance-tuner to identify the best possible configuration for each architecture. We demonstrate speedups of 3- 182times for a Xilinx Virtex5 LX 330T, 1.3-33times for an IBM Cell, and 3-131times for an NVIDIA 9600 GT GPU over a 3 GHz Intel Xeon 5160 implementation for a variety of single-precision device models

    Active Learning: Effects of Core Training Design Elements on Self-Regulatory Processes, Learning, and Adaptability

    This research describes a comprehensive examination of the cognitive, motivational, and emotional processes underlying active learning approaches, their effects on learning and transfer, and the core training design elements (exploration, training frame, emotion-control) and individual differences (cognitive ability, trait goal orientation, trait anxiety) that shape these processes. Participants (N = 350) were trained to operate a complex computer-based simulation. Exploratory learning and error-encouragement framing had a positive effect on adaptive transfer performance and interacted with cognitive ability and dispositional goal orientation to influence trainees’ metacognition and state goal orientation. Trainees who received the emotion-control strategy had lower levels of state anxiety. Implications for developing an integrated theory of active learning, learner-centered design, and research extensions are discussed

    ECONOMIC Potential of Renewable Energy in Vietnam's Power Sector

    A bottom-up Integrated Resource Planning model is used to examine the economic potential of renewable energy in Vietnam’s power sector. In a baseline scenario without renewables, coal provides 44% of electricity generated from 2010 to 2030. The use of renewables could reduce that figure to 39%, as well as decrease the sector’s cumulative emission of CO2 by 8%, SO2 by 3%, and NOx by 4%. In addition,renewables could avoid installing 4.4GW in fossil fuel generating capacity, conserve domestic coal,decrease coal and gases imports, improving energy independence and security. Wind could become cost-competitive assuming high but plausible on fossil fuel prices, if the cost of the technology falls to 900 US$/kW
