Two-layer distributed content caching for infotainment applications in VANETs

For vehicular ad-hoc networks (VANETs), edge caching has attracted considerable research attention to maximize the efficiency and reliability of infotainment applications. In this paper, we propose a two-layer distributed content caching scheme for VANETs by jointly exploiting the cache at both vehicles and roadside units (RSUs). Specifically, we formulate content caching problem to minimize the overall transmission delay and cost as a nonlinear integer programming (NLIP) problem and propose an alternate dynamic programming search (ADPS) based algorithm to solve it. In ADPS, we divide the original problem into three sub-problems, then we use the dynamic programming (DP) method to solve each sub-problem separately. To reduce the complexity, we further propose a cooperation-based greedy (CBG) algorithm to solve the large scale original problem. Both numerical simulation results and experiments in testbed show that the proposed caching scheme outperforms existed caching schemes, the transmission delay and cost can be reduced by 10% and 24% respectively, while the hit ratio can be increased by 30% in a practical environment, as compared to popularity-based caching scheme

Edge intelligence refers to a set of connected systems and devices for data collection, caching, processing, and analysis proximity to where data are captured based on artificial intelligence. Edge intelligence aims at enhancing data processing and protects the privacy and security of the data and users. Although recently emerged, spanning the period from 2011 to now, this field of research has shown explosive growth over the past five years. In this article, we present a thorough and comprehensive survey of the literature surrounding edge intelligence. We first identify four fundamental components of edge intelligence, i.e., edge caching, edge training, edge inference, and edge offloading based on theoretical and practical results pertaining to proposed and deployed systems. We then aim for a systematic classification of the state of the solutions by examining research results and observations for each of the four components and present a taxonomy that includes practical problems, adopted techniques, and application goals. For each category, we elaborate, compare, and analyze the literature from the perspectives of adopted techniques, objectives, performance, advantages and drawbacks, and so on. This article provides a comprehensive survey of edge intelligence and its application areas. In addition, we summarize the development of the emerging research fields and the current state of the art and discuss the important open issues and possible theoretical and technical directions.Peer reviewe

In IoT era, the growth of data variety is driven by cross-domain data fusion. In this paper, we advocate that “local production for local consumption (LPLC) paradigm” can be an innovative approach in cross-domain data fusion, and propose a new framework, geolocation-centric information platform (GCIP) that can produce and deliver diverse spatio-temporal content (STC). In the GCIP, (1) infrastructure-based geographic hierarchy edge network and (2) adhoc-based STC retention system are interplayed to provide both of geolocation-awareness and resiliency. Then, we discussed the concepts and the technical challenges of the GCIP. Finally, we implemented a proof-of-concepts of GCIP and demonstrated its efficacy through practical experiments on campus IPv6 network and simulation experiments

Energy-aware QoE and backhaul traffic optimization in green edge adaptive mobile video streaming

Collaborative caching and processing at the network edges through mobile edge computing (MEC) helps to improve the quality of experience (QoE) of mobile clients and alleviate significant traffic on backhaul network. Due to the challenges posed by current grid powered MEC systems, the integration of time-varying renewable energy into the MEC known as green MEC (GMEC) is a viable emerging solution. In this paper, we investigate the enabling of GMEC on joint optimization of QoE of the mobile clients and backhaul traffic in particularly dynamic adaptive video streaming over HTTP (DASH) scenarios. Due to intractability, we design a greedy-based algorithm with self-tuning parameterization mechanism to solve the formulated problem. Simulation results reveal that GMEC-enabled DASH system indeed helps not only to decrease grid power consumption but also significantly reduce backhaul traffic and improve average video bitrate of the clients. We also find out a threshold on the capacity of energy storage of edge servers after which the average video bitrate and backhaul traffic reaches a stable point. Our results can be used as some guidelines for mobile network operators (MNOs) to judge the effectiveness of GMEC for adaptive video streaming in next generation of mobile networks

The automotive industry has been incorporating various technological advancement on top-end versions of the vehicle order to improvise the degree of comfortability as well as enhancing the safer driving system. Infotainment system is one such pivotal system which not only makes the vehicle smart but also offers abundance of information as well as entertainment to the driver and passenger. The capability to offer extensive relay of service through infotainment system is highly dependent on vehicular adhoc network as well as back end support of cloud environment. However, it is know that such legacy system of vehicular adhoc network is also characterized by various problems associated with channel capacity, latency, heterogeneous network processing, and many more. Therefore, this paper offers a comprehensive insight to the research work being carried out towards leveraging the infotainment system in order to obtain the true picture of strength, limitation, and open end problems associated with infotainment system
