Emerging Communications for Wireless Sensor Networks
Wireless sensor networks are deployed in a rapidly increasing number of arenas, with uses ranging from healthcare monitoring to industrial and environmental safety, as well as new ubiquitous computing devices that are becoming ever more pervasive in our interconnected society. This book presents a range of exciting developments in software communication technologies including some novel applications, such as in high altitude systems, ground heat exchangers and body sensor networks. Authors from leading institutions on four continents present their latest findings in the spirit of exchanging information and stimulating discussion in the WSN community worldwide
Applications of Repeated Games in Wireless Networks: A Survey
A repeated game is an effective tool to model interactions and conflicts for
players aiming to achieve their objectives in a long-term basis. Contrary to
static noncooperative games that model an interaction among players in only one
period, in repeated games, interactions of players repeat for multiple periods;
and thus the players become aware of other players' past behaviors and their
future benefits, and will adapt their behavior accordingly. In wireless
networks, conflicts among wireless nodes can lead to selfish behaviors,
resulting in poor network performances and detrimental individual payoffs. In
this paper, we survey the applications of repeated games in different wireless
networks. The main goal is to demonstrate the use of repeated games to
encourage wireless nodes to cooperate, thereby improving network performances
and avoiding network disruption due to selfish behaviors. Furthermore, various
problems in wireless networks and variations of repeated game models together
with the corresponding solutions are discussed in this survey. Finally, we

Situational Awareness Enhancement for Connected and Automated Vehicle Systems
Recent developments in the area of Connected and Automated Vehicles (CAVs) have boosted the interest in Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITSs). While ITS is intended to resolve and mitigate serious traffic issues such as passenger and pedestrian fatalities, accidents, and traffic congestion; these goals are only achievable by vehicles that are fully aware of their situation and surroundings in real-time. Therefore, connected and automated vehicle systems heavily rely on communication technologies to create a real-time map of their surrounding environment and extend their range of situational awareness. In this dissertation, we propose novel approaches to enhance situational awareness, its applications, and effective sharing of information among vehicles.;The communication technology for CAVs is known as vehicle-to-everything (V2x) communication, in which vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) and vehicle-to-infrastructure (V2I) have been targeted for the first round of deployment based on dedicated short-range communication (DSRC) devices for vehicles and road-side transportation infrastructures. Wireless communication among these entities creates self-organizing networks, known as Vehicular Ad-hoc Networks (VANETs). Due to the mobile, rapidly changing, and intrinsically error-prone nature of VANETs, traditional network architectures are generally unsatisfactory to address VANETs fundamental performance requirements. Therefore, we first investigate imperfections of the vehicular communication channel and propose a new modeling scheme for large-scale and small-scale components of the communication channel in dense vehicular networks. Subsequently, we introduce an innovative method for a joint modeling of the situational awareness and networking components of CAVs in a single framework. Based on these two models, we propose a novel network-aware broadcast protocol for fast broadcasting of information over multiple hops to extend the range of situational awareness. Afterward, motivated by the most common and injury-prone pedestrian crash scenarios, we extend our work by proposing an end-to-end Vehicle-to-Pedestrian (V2P) framework to provide situational awareness and hazard detection for vulnerable road users. Finally, as humans are the most spontaneous and influential entity for transportation systems, we design a learning-based driver behavior model and integrate it into our situational awareness component. Consequently, higher accuracy of situational awareness and overall system performance are achieved by exchange of more useful information
DESIGN OF MOBILE DATA COLLECTOR BASED CLUSTERING ROUTING PROTOCOL FOR WIRELESS SENSOR NETWORKS
Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) consisting of hundreds or even thousands of
nodes, canbe used for a multitude of applications such as warfare intelligence or to
monitor the environment. A typical WSN node has a limited and usually an
irreplaceable power source and the efficient use of the available power is of utmost
importance to ensure maximum lifetime of eachWSNapplication. Each of the nodes
needs to transmit and communicate sensed data to an aggregation point for use by
higher layer systems. Data and message transmission among nodes collectively
consume the largest amount of energy available in WSNs. The network routing
protocols ensure that every message reaches thedestination and has a direct impact on
the amount of transmissions to deliver messages successfully. To this end, the
transmission protocol within the WSNs should be scalable, adaptable and optimized
to consume the least possible amount of energy to suite different network
architectures and application domains. The inclusion of mobile nodes in the WSNs
deployment proves to be detrimental to protocol performance in terms of nodes
energy efficiency and reliable message delivery. This thesis which proposes a novel
Mobile Data Collector based clustering routing protocol for WSNs is designed that
combines cluster based hierarchical architecture and utilizes three-tier multi-hop
routing strategy between cluster heads to base station by the help of Mobile Data
Collector (MDC) for inter-cluster communication. In addition, a Mobile Data
Collector based routing protocol is compared with Low Energy Adaptive Clustering
Hierarchy and A Novel Application Specific Network Protocol for Wireless Sensor
Networks routing protocol. The protocol is designed with the following in mind:
minimize the energy consumption of sensor nodes, resolve communication holes
issues, maintain data reliability, finally reach tradeoff between energy efficiency and
latency in terms of End-to-End, and channel access delays. Simulation results have
shown that the Mobile Data Collector based clustering routing protocol for WSNs
could be easily implemented in environmental applications where energy efficiency of
sensor nodes, network lifetime and data reliability are major concerns
Mathematical optimisation and signal processing techniques in wireless relay networks
With the growth of wireless networks such as sensor networks and mesh networks, the challenges of sustaining higher data rates and coverage, coupled with requirement for high quality of services, need to be addressed. The use of spatial diversity proves to be an attractive option due to its ability to significantly enhance network performance without additional bandwidth or transmission power. This thesis proposes the use of cooperative wireless relays to improvise spatial diversity in wireless sensor networks and wireless mesh networks. Cooperation in this context implies that the signals are exchanged between relays for optimal performance. The network gains realised using the proposed cooperative relays for signal forwarding are significantly large, advocating the utilisation of cooperation amongst relays. The work begins with proposing a minimum mean square error (MMSE) based relaying strategy that provides improvement in bit error rate. A simplified algorithm has been developed to calculate the roots of a polynomial equation. Following this work, a novel signal forwarding technique based on convex optimisation techniques is proposed which attains specific quality of services for end users with minimal transmission power at the relays. Quantisation of signals passed between relays has been considered in the optimisation framework. Finally, a reduced complexity scheme together with a more realistic algorithm incorporating per relay node power constraints is proposed. Reliable and Energy Efficient Network Protocols for Wireless Body Area Networks
In a wireless Body Area Network (WBAN) various sensors are attached on clothing, on the body or are even implanted under the skin. The wireless nature of the network and the wide variety of sensors offers numerous new, practical and innovative applications. A motivating example can be found in the world of health monitoring. The sensors of the WBAN measure for example the heartbeat, the body temperature or record a prolonged electrocardiogram. Using a WBAN, the patient experiences a greater physical mobility and is no longer compelled to stay in a hospital. A WBAN imposes the networks some strict and specific requirements. The devices are tiny, leaving only limited space for a battery. It is therefore of uttermost importance to restrict the energy consumption in the network. A possible solution is the development of energy efficient protocols that regulate the communication between the radios. Further, it is also important to consider the reliability of the communication. The data sent contains medical information and one has to make sure that it is correctly received at the personal device. It is not allowed that a critical message gets lost. In addition, a WBAN has to support the heterogeneity of its devices. This thesis focuses on the development of energy efficient and reliable network protocols for WBANs. Considered solutions are the use of multi-hop communication and the improved interaction between the different network layers. Mechanisms to reduce the energy consumption and to grade up the reliability of the communication are presented. In a first step, the physical layer of the communication near the human body is studied and investigated. The probability of a connection between two nodes on the body is modeled and used to investigate which network topologies can be considered as the most energy efficient and reliable. Next, MOFBAN, a lightweight framework for network architecture is presented. Finally, CICADA is presented: a new cross layer protocol for WBANs that both handles channel medium access and routing
