    Advancing UAV Path Planning System: A Software Pattern Language for Dynamic Environments

    In the rapidly advancing domain of Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) technologies, the capability to navigate dynamic and unpredictable environments is paramount. To this end, we present a novel design pattern framework for real-time UAV path planning, derived from the established Pattern Language of Program Community (PLOP). This framework integrates a suite of software patterns, each selected for its role in enhancing UAV operational adaptability, environmental awareness, and resource management. Our proposed framework capitalizes on a blend of behavioral, structural, and creational patterns, which work in concert to refine the UAV's decision-making processes in response to changing environmental conditions. For instance, the Observer pattern is employed to maintain real-time environmental awareness, while the Strategy pattern allows for dynamic adaptability in the UAV's path planning algorithm. Theoretical analysis and conceptual evaluations form the backbone of this research, eschewing empirical experiments for a detailed exploration of the design's potential. By offering a systematic and standardized approach, this research contributes to the UAV field by providing a robust theoretical foundation for future empirical studies and practical implementations, aiming to elevate the efficiency and safety of UAV operations in dynamic environments

    Suitability of NB-IoT for indoor industrial environment: a survey and insights

    The Internet of Things (IoT) and its applications in industrial settings are set to bring in the fourth industrial revolution. The industrial environment consisting of high profile manufacturing plants and a variety of equipment is inherently characterized by high reflectiveness, causing significant multi-path components that affect the propagation of wireless communications—a challenge among others that needs to be resolved. This paper provides a detailed insight into Narrow-Band IoT (NB-IoT), Industrial IoT (IIoT), and Wireless Sensor Networks (WSN) within the context of indoor industrial environments. It presents the applications of NB-IoT for industrial settings, such as the challenges associated with these applications. Furthermore, future research directions were put forth in the areas of NB-IoT network management using self-organizing network (SON) technology, edge computing for scalability enhancement, security in NB-IoT generated data, and proposing a suitable propagation model for reliable wireless communications

    The Case for Liberal Spectrum Licenses: A Technical and Economic Perspective

    The traditional system of radio spectrum allocation has inefficiently restricted wireless services. Alternatively, liberal licenses ceding de facto spectrum ownership rights yield incentives for operators to maximize airwave value. These authorizations have been widely used for mobile services in the U.S. and internationally, leading to the development of highly productive services and waves of innovation in technology, applications and business models. Serious challenges to the efficacy of such a spectrum regime have arisen, however. Seeing the widespread adoption of such devices as cordless phones and wi-fi radios using bands set aside for unlicensed use, some scholars and policy makers posit that spectrum sharing technologies have become cheap and easy to deploy, mitigating airwave scarcity and, therefore, the utility of exclusive rights. This paper evaluates such claims technically and economically. We demonstrate that spectrum scarcity is alive and well. Costly conflicts over airwave use not only continue, but have intensified with scientific advances that dramatically improve the functionality of wireless devices and so increase demand for spectrum access. Exclusive ownership rights help direct spectrum inputs to where they deliver the highest social gains, making exclusive property rules relatively more socially valuable. Liberal licenses efficiently accommodate rival business models (including those commonly associated with unlicensed spectrum allocations) while mitigating the constraints levied on spectrum use by regulators imposing restrictions in traditional licenses or via use rules and technology standards in unlicensed spectrum allocations.

    Adaptive Big Data Pipeline

    Over the past three decades, data has exponentially evolved from being a simple software by-product to one of the most important companies’ assets used to understand their customers and foresee trends. Deep learning has demonstrated that big volumes of clean data generally provide more flexibility and accuracy when modeling a phenomenon. However, handling ever-increasing data volumes entail new challenges: the lack of expertise to select the appropriate big data tools for the processing pipelines, as well as the speed at which engineers can take such pipelines into production reliably, leveraging the cloud. We introduce a system called Adaptive Big Data Pipelines: a platform to automate data pipelines creation. It provides an interface to capture the data sources, transformations, destinations and execution schedule. The system builds up the cloud infrastructure, schedules and fine-tunes the transformations, and creates the data lineage graph. This system has been tested on data sets of 50 gigabytes, processing them in just a few minutes without user intervention.ITESO, A. C

    Simulation of Diffuser for Horizontal Axis Wind Turbine using Computational Fluid Dynamics

    As a renewable energy, wind energy becomes one of the promising energy technologies. Most wind turbine technologies are designed at high speeds which are not effectively operated in areas with low wind speeds. Therefore, an effective technology to enhance the possible use of wind energy at low wind speeds is needed. The concept of Diffuser Augmented Wind Turbine (DAWT) has been used recently to improve the use of wind turbine in a low wind speed area by manipulating the wind speed. The pressure difference between inside and outside of the diffuser is generated which might enhance the wind velocity; hence, the power is increased. In this paper, simulation using ANSYS was conducted to investigate the performance of Horizontal Axis Wind Turbine (HAWT) in low wind speed area applying DAWT technology by modifying the angle of the diffuser. The variation of the diffuser angle was in the range 4- 16o and the diffuser length to diameter (L/D) is 1.25D. The simulation results showed a good agreement with the reference literature which obtained the increased power around 1.2-1.7 times higher than the non-diffuser wind turbine
