Balancing the Migration of Virtual Network Functions with Replications in Data Centers
The Network Function Virtualization (NFV) paradigm is enabling flexibility,
programmability and implementation of traditional network functions into
generic hardware, in form of the so-called Virtual Network Functions (VNFs).
Today, cloud service providers use Virtual Machines (VMs) for the instantiation
of VNFs in the data center (DC) networks. To instantiate multiple VNFs in a
typical scenario of Service Function Chains (SFCs), many important objectives
need to be met simultaneously, such as server load balancing, energy efficiency
and service execution time. The well-known \emph{VNF placement} problem
requires solutions that often consider \emph{migration} of virtual machines
(VMs) to meet this objectives. Ongoing efforts, for instance, are making a
strong case for migrations to minimize energy consumption, while showing that
attention needs to be paid to the Quality of Service (QoS) due to service
interruptions caused by migrations. To balance the server allocation strategies
and QoS, we propose using \emph{replications} of VNFs to reduce migrations in
DC networks. We propose a Linear Programming (LP) model to study a trade-off
between replications, which while beneficial to QoS require additional server
resources, and migrations, which while beneficial to server load management can
adversely impact the QoS. The results show that, for a given objective, the
replications can reduce the number of migrations and can also enable a better
server and data center network load balancing
Deploying elastic routing capability in an SDN/NFV-enabled environment
SDN and NFV are two paradigms that introduce unseen flexibility in telecom networks. Where previously telecom services were provided by dedicated hardware and associated (vendor-specific) protocols, SDN enables to control telecom networks through specialized software running on controllers. NFV enables highly optimized packet-processing network functions to run on generic/multi-purpose hardware such as x86 servers. Although the possibilities of SDN and NFV are well-known, concrete control and orchestration architectures are still under design and few prototype validations are available. In this demo we demonstrate the dynamic up-and downscaling of an elastic router supporting NFV-based network management, for example needed in a VPN service. The framework which enables this elasticity is the UNIFY ESCAPE environment, which is a PoC following an ETSI NFV MANO-conform architecture. This demo is one of the first to demonstrate a fully closed control loop for scaling NFs in an SDN/NFV control and orchestration architecture
Scalable and Cost Efficient Algorithms for Virtual CDN Migration
Virtual Content Delivery Network (vCDN) migration is necessary to optimize
the use of resources and improve the performance of the overall SDN/NFV-based
CDN function in terms of network operator cost reduction and high streaming
quality. It requires intelligent and enticed joint SDN/NFV migration algorithms
due to the evident huge amount of traffic to be delivered to end customers of
the network. In this paper, two approaches for finding the optimal and near
optimal path placement(s) and vCDN migration(s) are proposed (OPAC and HPAC).
Moreover, several scenarios are considered to quantify the OPAC and HPAC
behaviors and to compare their efficiency in terms of migration cost, migration
time, vCDN replication number, and other cost factors. Then, they are
implemented and evaluated under different network scales. Finally, the proposed
algorithms are integrated in an SDN/NFV framework. Index Terms: vCDN; SDN/NFV

APMEC: An Automated Provisioning Framework for Multi-access Edge Computing
Novel use cases and verticals such as connected cars and human-robot
cooperation in the areas of 5G and Tactile Internet can significantly benefit
from the flexibility and reduced latency provided by Network Function
Virtualization (NFV) and Multi-Access Edge Computing (MEC). Existing frameworks
managing and orchestrating MEC and NFV are either tightly coupled or completely
separated. The former design is inflexible and increases the complexity of one
framework. Whereas, the latter leads to inefficient use of computation
resources because information are not shared. We introduce APMEC, a dedicated
framework for MEC while enabling the collaboration with the management and
orchestration (MANO) frameworks for NFV. The new design allows to reuse
allocated network services, thus maximizing resource utilization. Measurement
results have shown that APMEC can allocate up to 60% more number of network
services. Being developed on top of OpenStack, APMEC is an open source project,
available for collaboration and facilitating further research activities
Algorithms for advance bandwidth reservation in media production networks
Media production generally requires many geographically distributed actors (e.g., production houses, broadcasters, advertisers) to exchange huge amounts of raw video and audio data. Traditional distribution techniques, such as dedicated point-to-point optical links, are highly inefficient in terms of installation time and cost. To improve efficiency, shared media production networks that connect all involved actors over a large geographical area, are currently being deployed. The traffic in such networks is often predictable, as the timing and bandwidth requirements of data transfers are generally known hours or even days in advance. As such, the use of advance bandwidth reservation (AR) can greatly increase resource utilization and cost efficiency. In this paper, we propose an Integer Linear Programming formulation of the bandwidth scheduling problem, which takes into account the specific characteristics of media production networks, is presented. Two novel optimization algorithms based on this model are thoroughly evaluated and compared by means of in-depth simulation results
