Search based software engineering: Trends, techniques and applications

The definitive version is available from the link below.In the past five years there has been a dramatic increase in work on Search-Based Software Engineering (SBSE), an approach to Software Engineering (SE) in which Search-Based Optimization (SBO) algorithms are used to address problems in SE. SBSE has been applied to problems throughout the SE lifecycle, from requirements and project planning to maintenance and reengineering. The approach is attractive because it offers a suite of adaptive automated and semiautomated solutions in situations typified by large complex problem spaces with multiple competing and conflicting objectives.
This article provides a review and classification of literature on SBSE. The work identifies research trends and relationships between the techniques applied and the applications to which they have been applied and highlights gaps in the literature and avenues for further research.EPSRC and E
A 64mW DNN-based Visual Navigation Engine for Autonomous Nano-Drones
Fully-autonomous miniaturized robots (e.g., drones), with artificial
intelligence (AI) based visual navigation capabilities are extremely
challenging drivers of Internet-of-Things edge intelligence capabilities.
Visual navigation based on AI approaches, such as deep neural networks (DNNs)
are becoming pervasive for standard-size drones, but are considered out of
reach for nanodrones with size of a few cm. In this work, we
present the first (to the best of our knowledge) demonstration of a navigation
engine for autonomous nano-drones capable of closed-loop end-to-end DNN-based
visual navigation. To achieve this goal we developed a complete methodology for
parallel execution of complex DNNs directly on-bard of resource-constrained
milliwatt-scale nodes. Our system is based on GAP8, a novel parallel
ultra-low-power computing platform, and a 27 g commercial, open-source
CrazyFlie 2.0 nano-quadrotor. As part of our general methodology we discuss the
software mapping techniques that enable the state-of-the-art deep convolutional
neural network presented in [1] to be fully executed on-board within a strict 6
fps real-time constraint with no compromise in terms of flight results, while
all processing is done with only 64 mW on average. Our navigation engine is
flexible and can be used to span a wide performance range: at its peak
performance corner it achieves 18 fps while still consuming on average just

D-SPACE4Cloud: A Design Tool for Big Data Applications
The last years have seen a steep rise in data generation worldwide, with the
development and widespread adoption of several software projects targeting the
Big Data paradigm. Many companies currently engage in Big Data analytics as
part of their core business activities, nonetheless there are no tools and
techniques to support the design of the underlying hardware configuration
backing such systems. In particular, the focus in this report is set on Cloud
deployed clusters, which represent a cost-effective alternative to on premises
installations. We propose a novel tool implementing a battery of optimization
and prediction techniques integrated so as to efficiently assess several
alternative resource configurations, in order to determine the minimum cost
cluster deployment satisfying QoS constraints. Further, the experimental
campaign conducted on real systems shows the validity and relevance of the
proposed method

Elastic Business Process Management: State of the Art and Open Challenges for BPM in the Cloud
With the advent of cloud computing, organizations are nowadays able to react
rapidly to changing demands for computational resources. Not only individual
applications can be hosted on virtual cloud infrastructures, but also complete
business processes. This allows the realization of so-called elastic processes,
i.e., processes which are carried out using elastic cloud resources. Despite
the manifold benefits of elastic processes, there is still a lack of solutions
supporting them.
In this paper, we identify the state of the art of elastic Business Process
Management with a focus on infrastructural challenges. We conceptualize an
architecture for an elastic Business Process Management System and discuss
existing work on scheduling, resource allocation, monitoring, decentralized
coordination, and state management for elastic processes. Furthermore, we
present two representative elastic Business Process Management Systems which
are intended to counter these challenges. Based on our findings, we identify
open issues and outline possible research directions for the realization of

Design and Experimental Validation of a Software-Defined Radio Access Network Testbed with Slicing Support
Network slicing is a fundamental feature of 5G systems to partition a single
network into a number of segregated logical networks, each optimized for a
particular type of service, or dedicated to a particular customer or
application. The realization of network slicing is particularly challenging in
the Radio Access Network (RAN) part, where multiple slices can be multiplexed
over the same radio channel and Radio Resource Management (RRM) functions shall
be used to split the cell radio resources and achieve the expected behaviour
per slice. In this context, this paper describes the key design and
implementation aspects of a Software-Defined RAN (SD-RAN) experimental testbed
with slicing support. The testbed has been designed consistently with the
slicing capabilities and related management framework established by 3GPP in
Release 15. The testbed is used to demonstrate the provisioning of RAN slices
(e.g. preparation, commissioning and activation phases) and the operation of
the implemented RRM functionality for slice-aware admission control and
scheduling
HPC Cloud for Scientific and Business Applications: Taxonomy, Vision, and Research Challenges
High Performance Computing (HPC) clouds are becoming an alternative to
on-premise clusters for executing scientific applications and business
analytics services. Most research efforts in HPC cloud aim to understand the
cost-benefit of moving resource-intensive applications from on-premise
environments to public cloud platforms. Industry trends show hybrid
environments are the natural path to get the best of the on-premise and cloud
resources---steady (and sensitive) workloads can run on on-premise resources
and peak demand can leverage remote resources in a pay-as-you-go manner.
Nevertheless, there are plenty of questions to be answered in HPC cloud, which
range from how to extract the best performance of an unknown underlying
platform to what services are essential to make its usage easier. Moreover, the
discussion on the right pricing and contractual models to fit small and large
users is relevant for the sustainability of HPC clouds. This paper brings a
survey and taxonomy of efforts in HPC cloud and a vision on what we believe is
ahead of us, including a set of research challenges that, once tackled, can
help advance businesses and scientific discoveries. This becomes particularly
relevant due to the fast increasing wave of new HPC applications coming from
