Since its invention in 2001, wireless capsule endoscopy (WCE) has played an important role in the endoscopic examination of the gastrointestinal tract. During this period, WCE has undergone tremendous advances in technology, making it the first-line modality for diseases from bleeding to cancer in the small-bowel. Current research efforts are focused on evolving WCE to include functionality such as drug delivery, biopsy, and active locomotion. For the integration of these functionalities into WCE, two critical prerequisites are the image quality enhancement and the power consumption reduction. An efficient image compression solution is required to retain the highest image quality while reducing the transmission power. The issue is more challenging due to the fact that image sensors in WCE capture images in Bayer Colour filter array (CFA) format. Therefore, standard compression engines provide inferior compression performance. The focus of this thesis is to design an optimized image compression pipeline to encode the capsule endoscopic (CE) image efficiently in CFA format. To this end, this thesis proposes two image compression schemes. First, a lossless image compression algorithm is proposed consisting of an optimum reversible colour transformation, a low complexity prediction model, a corner clipping mechanism and a single context adaptive Golomb-Rice entropy encoder. The derivation of colour transformation that provides the best performance for a given prediction model is considered as an optimization problem. The low complexity prediction model works in raster order fashion and requires no buffer memory. The application of colour transformation yields lower inter-colour correlation and allows the efficient independent encoding of the colour components. The second compression scheme in this thesis is a lossy compression algorithm with a integer discrete cosine transformation at its core. Using the statistics obtained from a large dataset of CE image, an optimum colour transformation is derived using the principal component analysis (PCA). The transformed coefficients are quantized using optimized quantization table, which was designed with a focus to discard medically irrelevant information. A fast demosaicking algorithm is developed to reconstruct the colour image from the lossy CFA image in the decoder. Extensive experiments and comparisons with state-of-the-art lossless image compression methods establish the superiority of the proposed compression methods as simple and efficient image compression algorithm. The lossless algorithm can transmit the image in a lossless manner within the available bandwidth. On the other hand, performance evaluation of lossy compression algorithm indicates that it can deliver high quality images at low transmission power and low computation costs

Evolutionary Computing and Second generation Wavelet Transform optimization: Current State of the Art

    Get PDF
The Evolutionary Computation techniques are exposed to number of domains to achieve optimization. One of those domains is second generation wavelet transformations for image compression. Various types of Lifting Schemes are being introduced in recent literature. Since the growth in Lifting Schemes is in an incremental way and new types of Lifting Schemes are appearing continually. In this context, developing flexible and adaptive optimization approaches is a severe challenge. Evolutionary Computing based lifting scheme optimization techniques are a valuable technology to achieve better results in image compression. However, despite the variety of such methods described in the literature in recent years, security tools incorporating anomaly detection functionalities are just starting to appear, and several important problems remain to be solved. In this paper, we present a review of the most well-known EC approaches for optimizing Secondary level Wavelet transformations

Non Oblivious Watermarking Technique for JPEG2000 Compressed Images Using Arnold Scrambling of Unequal Size Watermark Blocks

In this paper, a watermarking technique for JPEG2000 compressed image is proposed. Scrambling of secret message is performed block-wise using Arnold Transform. Secret message is divided into non-overlapping blocks of unequal size and then Arnold transform is applied on each block and secret key is generated based on the periodicity of each block. Scrambled secret message is embedded into qualified significant wavelet coefficients of a cover image. After embedding the secret message into wavelet coefficients, the remaining processes of JPEG2000 standard are executed to compress the watermarked image at different compression rates. Scaling Factor (SF) is used to embed watermark into wavelet coefficients and the value of SF is stored into COM box of the code stream of JPEG2000 compressed image and this SF value and secret key are used to extract the embedded watermark on the receiver side. The performance of the proposed technique is robust to a variety of attacks like image cropping, salt and pepper noise, and rotation. Proposed technique is compared with the existing watermarking techniques for JPEG2000 compressed images to show its effectiveness

Evolutionary Approach to Improve Wavelet Transforms for Image Compression in Embedded Systems

    Get PDF
A bioinspired, evolutionary algorithm for optimizing wavelet transforms oriented to improve image compression in embedded systems is proposed, modelled, and validated here. A simplified version of an Evolution Strategy, using fixed point arithmetic and a hardware-friendly mutation operator, has been chosen as the search algorithm. Several cutdowns on the computing requirements have been done to the original algorithm, adapting it for an FPGA implementation. The work presented in this paper describes the algorithm as well as the test strategy developed to validate it, showing several results in the effort to find a suitable set of parameters that assure the success in the evolutionary search. The results show how high-quality transforms are evolved from scratch with limited precision arithmetic and a simplified algorithm. Since the intended deployment platform is an FPGA, HW/SW partitioning issues are also considered as well as code profiling accomplished to validate the proposal, showing some preliminary results of the proposed hardware architecture

Adaptive polyphase subband decomposition structures for image compression

    Get PDF
Cataloged from PDF version of article.Subband decomposition techniques have been extensively used for data coding and analysis. In most filter banks, the goal is to obtain subsampled signals corresponding to different spectral regions of the original data. However, this approach leads to various artifacts in images having spatially varying characteristics, such as images containing text, subtitles, or sharp edges. In this paper, adaptive filter banks with perfect reconstruction property are presented for such images. The filters of the decomposition structure which can be either linear or nonlinear vary according to the nature of the signal. This leads to improved image compression ratios. Simulation examples are presented

Vector Lifting Schemes for Stereo Image Coding

International audienceMany research efforts have been devoted to the improvement of stereo image coding techniques for storage or transmission. In this paper, we are mainly interested in lossyto- lossless coding schemes for stereo images allowing progressive reconstruction. The most commonly used approaches for stereo compression are based on disparity compensation techniques. The basic principle involved in this technique first consists of estimating the disparity map. Then, one image is considered as a reference and the other is predicted in order to generate a residual image. In this work, we propose a novel approach, based on Vector Lifting Schemes (VLS), which offers the advantage of generating two compact multiresolution representations of the left and the right views. We present two versions of this new scheme. A theoretical analysis of the performance of the considered VLS is also conducted. Experimental results indicate a significant improvement using the proposed structures compared with conventional methods
