Optimized Hierarchical Power Oscillations Control for Distributed Generation Under Unbalanced Conditions

Control structures have critical influences on converter-interfaced distributed generations (DG) under unbalanced conditions. Most of previous works focus on suppressing active power oscillations and ripples of DC bus voltage. In this paper, the relationship between amplitudes of the active power oscillations and the reactive power oscillations are firstly deduced and the hierarchical control of DG is proposed to reduce power oscillations. The hierarchical control consists of primary and secondary levels. Current references are generated in primary control level and the active power oscillations can be suppressed by a dual current controller. Secondary control reduces the active power and reactive power oscillations simultaneously by optimal model aiming for minimum amplitudes of oscillations. Simulation results show that the proposed secondary control with less injecting negative-sequence current than traditional control methods can effectively limit both active power and reactive power oscillations.Comment: Accepted by Applied Energ

“This research is an endeavor to apply new and well-established control methodologies to improve transient response, stability and reliability of three-phase inverters in grid-connected and isolated mode of operation. In the course of studying the effect of these methodologies, model-based control is introduced and is extensively applied which is relatively a new approach. In addition, the application of this concept has been studied on developing “grid-forming” controls to allow wind and solar inverters to support voltage and frequency levels like traditional generators. This research encloses the details of three major works of this research and their possible contributions on improving the performance of three-phase inverters in gridconnected and isolated mode of operation. The first one employs the concept of adaptive control using multiple models and a hierarchical control approach to smoothly switch between isolated and grid-connected modes of operation. In the second work, the features of the first research work have been applied and more nourished to control a grid-forming unit. The interactions of this grid-supporting converter with a grid- forming unit is the main subject of discussion in this work. The last work applies the concept of internal-model control to introduce a new control methodology in power-synchronization method. This approach has tackled the non-minimum phase issue attributed to power-synchronization methodology and offers a robust solution. Furthermore, in this research, detailed stability analysis of all the proposed control structures have been presented. Along with all simulation verification, FPGA-Based Hardware-in-the-Loop (HIL) has been utilized to verify the performance of the discrete control structure. The details of plant modeling, controller design, HIL and experimental results are presented for all of the proposed schemes in each section”--Abstract, page iv

[EN] Microgrids have emerged as a solution to address new challenges in power systems with the integration of distributed energy resources (DER). Inverter-based microgrids (IBMG) need to implement proper control systems to avoid stability and reliability issues. Thus, several researchers have introduced multi-objective control strategies for distributed generation on IBMG. This paper presents a review of the different approaches that have been proposed by several authors of multi-objective control. This work describes the main features of the inverter as a key component of microgrids. Details related to accomplishing efficient generation from a control systems' view have been observed. This study addresses the potential of multi-objective control to overcome conflicting objectives with balanced results. Finally, this paper shows future trends in control objectives and discussion of the different multi-objective approaches.Gonzales-Zurita, Ó.; Clairand, J.; Peñalvo-López, E.; Escrivá-Escrivá, G. Firstly, it studies different approximation methods and develops a new approach for simplification of Carson\u27s equations to model distribution lines for unbalanced power flow and short circuit analysis. The results of applying the proposed method on a three-phase unbalanced distribution system are compared with different existing methods as well as actual impedance values obtained from numerical integration method. Then steady state modeling and optimal placing of multiple PV system are investigated in order to reduce the total loss in the system. The results show the effectiveness of the proposed method in minimizing the total loss in a distribution power system.;The dissertation starts the discussion about microgrid modeling and control by implementing a novel frequency control approach in a microgrid. This study has been carried out step by step by modeling different part of the power system and proposing different algorithms. Firstly, the application of Renewable Energy Sources (RES) accompanied with Energy Storage Systems (ESS) in a hybrid system is studied in the presence of Distributed Generation (DG) resources in Load Frequency Control (LFC) problem of microgrid power system with significant penetration of wind speed disturbances. The next step is to investigate the effect of PHEVs in modelling and controlling the microgid. Therefore, system with different penetrations of PHEVs and different stochastic behaviors of PHEVs is modeled. Different kinds of control approaches, including PI control as conventional method and proposed optimal LQR and dynamic programming methods, have been utilized and the results have been compared with each other. Then, Multi Agent System (MAS) is utilized as a control solution which contributes the cyber aspects of microgrid system. The modeled microgrid along with dynamic models of different components is implemented in a centralized multi-agent based structure. The robustness of the proposed controller has been tested against different frequency changes including cyber attack implications with different timing and severity. New attack detection through learning method is also proposed and tested. The results show improvement in frequency response of the microgrid system using the proposed control method and defense strategy against cyber attacks.;Finally, a new multi-agent based control method along with an advanced secondary voltage and frequency control using Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) and Adaptive Dynamic Programming (ADP) is proposed and tested in the modeled microgrid considering nonlinear heterogeneous dynamic models of DGs. The results are shown and compared with conventional control approaches and different multi-agent structures. It is observed that the results are improved by using the new multi-agent structure and secondary control method.;In summary, contributions of this dissertation center in three main topics. Firstly, new accurate methods for modeling the distribution line impedance and PV system is developed. Then advanced control and defense strategy method for frequency regulation against cyber intrusions and load changes in a microgrid is proposed. Finally, a new hierarchical multi-agent based control algorithm is designed for secondary voltage and frequency control of the microgrid. (Abstract shortened by ProQuest.)

New phase-changing soft open point and impacts on optimising unbalanced power distribution networks

Three-phase unbalanced conditions in distribution networks are conventionally caused by load imbalance, asymmetrical fault conditions of transformers and impedances of three phases. The uneven integration of single-phase distributed generation (DG) worsens the imbalance situation. These unbalanced conditions result in financial losses, inefficient utilisation of assets and security risks to the network infrastructure. In this study, a phase-changing soft open point (PC-SOP) is proposed as a new way of connecting soft open points (SOPs) to balance the power flows among three phases by controlling active power and reactive power. Then an operational strategy based on PC-SOPs is presented for three-phase four-wire unbalanced systems. By optimising the regulation of SOPs, optimal energy storage systems dispatch and DG curtailment, the proposed strategy can reduce power losses and three-phase imbalance. Second-order cone programming (SOCP) relaxation is utilised to convert the original non-convex and non-linear model into an SOCP model which can be solved efficiently by commercial solvers. Case studies are conducted on a modified IEEE 34-node three-phase four-wire system and the IEEE 123-node test feeder to verify the effectiveness, efficiency and scalability of the proposed PC-SOP concept and its operational strategy

This study proposes a control scheme for high power grid-connected wind power converters, which is oriented to enhance their performance when connected to weak grids with low short circuit ratio. The proposed controller consists of an outer current reference generation loop and an inner current loop, working in stationary reference frame. In the outer loop, the current reference is calculated to comply simultaneously with the grid code requirements, the control of the DC link, and the operational safety margins of the converter during faulty conditions. On the other hand, the proposed inner current loop consists of a proportional resonant controller, a capacitor voltage feedforward and a phase shifter. Moreover, simulation results considering different weak grid conditions, as well as experimental results of a full-scale 4 MW converter test-bench are presented to validate the good performance of the proposed method. This work has been partially suported by the Spanish Ministry of Science and Universities under the code RTI2018-100921-B-C21 and Tecniospring programme under the code TECSPR16-1-006.Peer ReviewedPostprint (published version

ABSTRACT: Renewable generation and energy storage systems are technologies which evoke the future energy paradigm. While these technologies have reached their technological maturity, the way they are integrated and operated in the future smart grids still presents several challenges. Microgrids appear as a key technology to pave the path towards the integration and optimized operation in smart grids. However, the optimization of microgrids considered as a set of subsystems introduces a high degree of complexity in the associated control problem. Model Predictive Control (MPC) is a control methodology which has been satisfactorily applied to solve complex control problems in the industry and also currently it is widely researched and adopted in the research community. This paper reviews the application of MPC to microgrids from the point of view of their main functionalities, describing the design methodology and the main current advances. Finally, challenges and future perspectives of MPC and its applications in microgrids are described and summarized.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

This thesis presents a flexible and robust architecture and corresponding control strategy for modern low voltage microgrids with distributed energy resources. The strategy fully exploits the potential of distributed energy resources, under grid-connected and islanded operating modes. In grid-connected mode, under global optimization mode, the control strategy pursues quasi-optimum operation of the microgrid, so as to reduce distribution loss and voltage deviations. In islanded mode, it effectively manages any available energy source to ensure a safe and smooth autonomous operation of the microgrid. Such strategy is applied to a fully-dispatchable microgrid structure, based on a master-slave control architecture, in which the distributed units are coordinated by means of the recently developed power-based control. The main advantages of the proposed architecture are the scalability (plug-and-play) and capability to run the distributed units without synchronization or knowledge of line impedances. Moreover, the proposed microgrid topology manages promptly the interaction with the mains by means of a utility interface, which is a grid-interactive inverter equipped with energy storage. This allows a number of advantages, including compensation of load unbalance, reduction of harmonic injection, fast reaction to load and line transients, and smooth transition between operating mode. On the other hand, in order to provide demand response, proportional power sharing, reactive power control, and full utilization of distributed energy resources, the microgrid employs a reliable communication link with limited bit rate that does not involve time-critical communications among distributed units. It has been shown that a communication failure does not jeopardize the system, and just impairs the global optimization mode. However, the system keeps properly operating under the local optimization mode, which is managed by a linear algorithm in order to optimize the compensation of reactive power, harmonic distortion and load unbalance by means of distributed electronic power processors, for example, active power filters and other grid-connected inverters, especially when their capability is limited. It consists in attain several power quality performance indexes, defined at the grid side and within a feasible power region in terms of the power converter capability. Based on measured load quantities and a certain objective function, the algorithm tracks the expected optimal source currents, which are thereupon used to calculate some scaling coefficients and, therefore, the optimal compensation current references. Finally, the thesis also proposes an efficient technique to control single-phase converters, arbitrarily connected to a three-phase distribution system (line-to-neutral or line-to-line), aiming for reduce unbalance load and control the power flow among different phases. It enhances the power quality at the point-of-common-coupling of the microgrid, improve voltage profile through the lines, and reduce the overall distribution loss. The master-slave microgrid architecture has been analyzed and validated by means of computer simulations and experimental results under sinusoidal/symmetrical and nonsinusoidal/asymmetrical voltage conditions, considering both the steady-state and dynamic performances. The local optimization mode, i.e., linear algorithm for optimized compensation, has been analyzed by simulation resultsDoutoradoEnergia EletricaDoutor em Engenharia Elétrica2012/24309-8, 2013/21922-3FAPES
