Natural Motion for Energy Saving in Robotic and Mechatronic Systems

    Get PDF
Energy saving in robotic and mechatronic systems is becoming an evermore important topic in both industry and academia. One strategy to reduce the energy consumption, especially for cyclic tasks, is exploiting natural motion. We define natural motion as the system response caused by the conversion of potential elastic energy into kinetic energy. This motion can be both a forced response assisted by a motor or a free response. The application of the natural motion concepts allows for energy saving in tasks characterized by repetitive or cyclic motion. This review paper proposes a classification of several approaches to natural motion, starting from the compliant elements and the actuators needed for its implementation. Then several approaches to natural motion are discussed based on the trajectory followed by the system, providing useful information to the researchers dealing with natural motion

University of Minnesota Ph.D. dissertation. March 2015. Major: Mechanical Engineering. Advisor: William Durfee. 1 computer file (PDF); viii, 155 pages.OBJECTIVE To determine the scaling law and design guidelines of small-scale hydraulic systems whose output power is in the range of 10 to 100 Watts. METHODS Fundamental fluid mechanics equations were employed to model the friction and leakage losses in the hydraulic components including cylinders, hoses, and pumps. Basic structural design equations were deployed to predict their weight. Customized test stands were built to validate the efficiency models, and catalog data of o-the-shelf components was compiled to validate the weight models. The electro-mechanical components including electric motors, gear heads and batteries were modeled using their catalog data. RESULTS The efficiency and the weight of both hydraulic and electro-mechanical components were modeled in analytical forms. These models were validated against either experimental data or existing catalog data. CONCLUSION The analytical models suggested the following design guidelines: first, high operating pressure is needed for hydraulic actuation systems to weigh lighter than equivalent electro-mechanical systems; second, critical dimension thresholds exist for hydraulic and electro-mechanical components, which should not be exceeded to achieve reasonable system efficiency; third, component efficiency plays a more important role than component weight to gain higher system power density; lastly, for applications where the actuator system weight matters the most, high pressure small scale hydraulic systems are preferred over electro-mechanical systems, but for applications where the overall system weight matters the most, electro-mechanical systems work better

Design, Control, and Perception of Bionic Legs and Exoskeletons

Bionic systems---wearable robots designed to replace, augment, or interact with the human body---have the potential to meaningfully impact quality of life; in particular, lower-limb prostheses and exoskeletons can help people walk faster, better, and safer. From a technical standpoint, there is a high barrier-to-entry to conduct research with bionic systems, limiting the quantity of research done; additionally, the constraints introduced by bionic systems often prohibit accurate measurement of the robot's output dynamics, limiting the quality of research done. From a scientific standpoint, we have begun to understand how people regulate lower-limb joint impedance (stiffness and damping), but not how they sense and perceive changes in joint impedance. To address these issues, I first present an open-source bionic leg prosthesis; I describe the design and testing process, and demonstrate patients meeting clinical ambulation goals in a rehabilitation hospital. Second, I develop tools to characterize open-loop impedance control systems and show how to achieve accurate impedance control without a torque feedback signal; additionally, I evaluate the efficiency of multiple bionic systems. Finally, I investigate how well people can perceive changes in the damping properties of a robot, similar to an exoskeleton. With this dissertation, I provide technical and scientific advances aimed at accelerating the field of bionics, with the ultimate goal of enabling meaningful impact with bionic systems.PHDMechanical EngineeringUniversity of Michigan, Horace H. Design and Evaluation of a Knee-Extension-Assist

Quadriceps muscle weakness is a condition that can result from a wide variety of causes, from diseases like polio and multiple sclerosis to injuries of the head and spine. Individuals with weakened quadriceps often have difficulty supplying the knee-extension moments required during common mobility tasks. Existing powered orthoses that provide an assistive knee-extension moment are large and heavy, with power supplies that generally last less than two hours. A new device that provides a knee-extension-assist moment was designed to aid an individual with quadriceps muscle weakness to stand up from a seated position, sit from a standing position, and walk up and down an inclined surface. The knee-extension-assist (KEA) was designed as a modular component to be incorporated into existing knee-ankle-foot-orthoses (KAFO). The KEA consists of three springs that are compressed, as the knee is flexed under bodyweight, by cables that wrap around a sheave at the knee. The KEA returns the stored energy from knee flexion as an extension moment during knee extension. During swing or other non-weight bearing activities, the device is disengaged from the KAFO by decoupling the sheave from the KAFO knee joint, allowing free knee joint motion. A prototype was built and mechanically tested to determine KEA behaviour during loading and extension and to ensure proper KEA function. For biomechanical evaluation, able-bodied subjects used the prototype KEA while performing sit-to-stand, stand-to-sit, ramp ascent, and ramp descent tasks. The KEA facilitated sitting and standing, providing an average of 53 % of the required extension moment for the two participants, which allowed one participant to reduce quadriceps usage by 38 % and the other to perform sit-to-stand in a slower and more controlled manner that was not possible without the KEA. KEA use during ramp gait caused an overall increase in quadriceps activation by 76 %, on average, with use. Future efforts will be made to modify the design to improve functionality, especially for ramp gait, and to reduce device size and weight
