    Large Eddy Simulation study on the structure of turbulent flow in a complex city

    Abstract Large Eddy Simulation (LES) of atmospheric flows has become an increasingly popular modelling approach within the last years, as it has the potential to provide deeper insight into unsteady flow phenomena. LES can be improved and validated using specifically designed and well documented wind tunnel datasets. In this work, we evaluate the performance of LES against a wind tunnel experiment in a semi-idealized city (Michel-Stadt; CEDVAL-LES database) and use the LES results to study the structure of the turbulent flow at the particular urban area. The first, second and third order statistics are presented, as well as velocity frequency distributions and energy spectra. The results compare well with the experimental values. Information about special features of the flow field is also provided. A particular focus of this work is put on the influence of grid resolution on the results. Five different grids are examined and the required resolution for turbulent flow within the canopy layer is evaluated. This study reveals the strong potential of LES for urban flow simulations. It is shown that LES can assess highly non-Gaussian flow behaviour in street canyons, which has implications for urban ventilation, wind comfort assessment and urban design

    Feasibility Study of Hydrogen Production from Wind Energy in Narvik

    The use of renewable energy sources is gaining momentum globally as possible replacements for fossil fuels which have proven to be serial contributors to global warming. Hydrogen is one such environmentally friendly fuel with zero carbon emission proven to be reliable for use in the transport sector. Since hydrogen is an energy carrier, its mode of production has for a long time relied on high carbon emission fuels that negate its authority as emission-free fuel. Therefore, this study investigates a green hydrogen production method based on water electrolysis using electrical energy from wind power. The project entails a detailed wind resource assessment around Narvik region through historical meteorological data analysis, and CFD simulations using Windographer and WindSim software programs to ascertain the viability of the wind power potential of the area. Thereafter, the project establishes suitable location(s) for appropriate wind turbine siting to generate optimal net AEP for use in the electrolysers. Subsequently, a detailed analytical calculation is conducted on the possible amount of hydrogen that can be produced when a water electrolyser system is installed at the Djupvik site based on the net AEP values obtained. Finally, there is determination of the probable cost estimates for such a venture

    This 10th International Conference in Air Quality - Science and Application is being held in the elegant and vibrant city of Milan, Italy. Our local hosts are ARIANET and ARPA Lombardia both of whom play a leading role in assessing and managing air pollution in the area. The meeting builds upon the series that began at the University of Hertfordshire, UK in July 1996. Subsequent meetings have been held at the Technical University of Madrid, Spain (1999), Loutraki, Greece (2001), Charles University, Prague, Czech Republic (2003), Valencia, Spain (2005), Cyprus (2007), Istanbul, Turkey (2009) Athens, Greece (2012) and Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Germany (2014). Over the last two decades controls to limit air pollution have increased but the problem of poor air quality persists in all cities of the world. Consequently, the issue of the quality of air that we breathe remains at the forefront of societal concerns and continues to demand the attention of scientists and policy makers to reduce health impacts and to achieve sustainable development. Although urbanisation is growing in terms of population, transport, energy consumption and utilities, science has shown that impact from air pollution in cities is not restricted to local scales but depends on contributions from regional and global scales including interactions with climate change. Despite improvements in technology, users still demand robust management and assessment tools to formulate effective control policies and strategies for reducing the health impact of air pollution. The topics of papers presented at the conference reflect the diversity of scales, processes and interactions affecting air pollution and its impact on health and the environment. As usual, the conference is stimulating cross-fertilisation of ideas and cooperation between the different air pollution science and user communities. In particular, there is greater involvement of city, regional and global air pollution, climate change, users and health communities at the meeting. This international conference brings together scientists, users and policy makers from across the globe to discuss the latest scientific advances in our understanding of air pollution and its impacts on our health and environment. In addition to the scientific advances, the conference will also seek to highlight applications and developments in management strategies and assessment tools for policy and decision makers. This volume presents a collection of abstracts of papers presented at the Conference.
