    Digital Innovations for a Circular Plastic Economy in Africa

    Plastic pollution is one of the biggest challenges of the twenty-first century that requires innovative and varied solutions. Focusing on sub-Saharan Africa, this book brings together interdisciplinary, multi-sectoral and multi-stakeholder perspectives exploring challenges and opportunities for utilising digital innovations to manage and accelerate the transition to a circular plastic economy (CPE). This book is organised into three sections bringing together discussion of environmental conditions, operational dimensions and country case studies of digital transformation towards the circular plastic economy. It explores the environment for digitisation in the circular economy, bringing together perspectives from practitioners in academia, innovation, policy, civil society and government agencies. The book also highlights specific country case studies in relation to the development and implementation of different innovative ideas to drive the circular plastic economy across the three sub-Saharan African regions. Finally, the book interrogates the policy dimensions and practitioner perspectives towards a digitally enabled circular plastic economy.     Graph Neural Networks For Mapping Variables Between Programs -- Extended Version

    Automated program analysis is a pivotal research domain in many areas of Computer Science -- Formal Methods and Artificial Intelligence, in particular. Due to the undecidability of the problem of program equivalence, comparing two programs is highly challenging. Typically, in order to compare two programs, a relation between both programs' sets of variables is required. Thus, mapping variables between two programs is useful for a panoply of tasks such as program equivalence, program analysis, program repair, and clone detection. In this work, we propose using graph neural networks (GNNs) to map the set of variables between two programs based on both programs' abstract syntax trees (ASTs). To demonstrate the strength of variable mappings, we present three use-cases of these mappings on the task of program repair to fix well-studied and recurrent bugs among novice programmers in introductory programming assignments (IPAs). Experimental results on a dataset of 4166 pairs of incorrect/correct programs show that our approach correctly maps 83% of the evaluation dataset. Moreover, our experiments show that the current state-of-the-art on program repair, greatly dependent on the programs' structure, can only repair about 72% of the incorrect programs. In contrast, our approach, which is solely based on variable mappings, can repair around 88.5%.Comment: Extended version of "Graph Neural Networks For Mapping Variables Between Programs", paper accepted at ECAI 2023.     This reprint encompasses fourteen contributions that offer avenues towards a better understanding of complex systems in human behavior. The phenomena studied here are generally pattern formation processes that originate in social interaction and psychotherapy. Several accounts are also given of the coordination in body movements and in physiological, neuronal and linguistic processes. A common denominator of such pattern formation is that complexity and entropy of the respective systems become reduced spontaneously, which is the hallmark of self-organization. The various methodological approaches of how to model such processes are presented in some detail. Results from the various methods are systematically compared and discussed. Among these approaches are algorithms for the quantification of synchrony by cross-correlational statistics, surrogate control procedures, recurrence mapping and network models.This volume offers an informative and sophisticated resource for scholars of human change, and as well for students at advanced levels, from graduate to post-doctoral.     OBSERVATIONAL CAUSAL INFERENCE FOR NETWORK DATA SETTINGS

    Observational causal inference (OCI) has shown significant promise in recent years, both as a tool for improving existing machine learning techniques and as an avenue to aid decision makers in applied areas, such as health and climate science. OCI relies on a key notion, identification, which links the counterfactual of interest to the observed data via a set of assumptions. Historically, OCI has relied on unrealistic assumptions, such as the ’no latent confounders’ assumption. To address this, Huang and Valtorta (2006) and Shpitser and Pearl (2006) provided sound and complete algorithms for identification of causal effects in causal directed acyclic graphs with latent variables. Nevertheless, these algorithms can only handle relatively simple causal queries. In this dissertation, I will detail my contributions which generalize identification theory in key directions. I will describe theory which enables identification of causal effects when i) data do not satisfy the ’independent and identically distributed’ assumption, as in vaccine or social network data, and ii) the intervention of interest is a function of other model variables, as in off-line, off-policy learning, iii) when these two complicated settings intersect. Additionally, I will highlight some novel ways to conceive of interventions in networks. I will conclude with a discussion of future directions
