Optimization and implementation of a Viterbi decoder under flexibility constraints
This paper discusses the impact of flexibility when designing a Viterbi decoder for both convolutional and TCM codes. Different trade-offs have to be considered in choosing the right architecture for the processing blocks and the resulting hardware penalty is evaluated. We study the impact of symbol quantization that degrades performance and affects the wordlength of the rate-flexible trellis datapath. A radix-2-based architecture for this datapath relaxes the hardware requirements on the branch metric and survivor path blocks substantially. The cost of flexibility in terms of cell area and power consumption is explored by an investigation of synthesized designs that provide different transmission rates. Two designs are fabricated in a digital 0.13- CMOS process. Based on post-layout simulations, a symbol baud rate of 168 Mbaud/s is achieved in TCM mode, equivalent to a maximum throughput of 840 Mbit/s using a 64-QAM constellation
A generalized risk approach to path inference based on hidden Markov models
Motivated by the unceasing interest in hidden Markov models (HMMs), this
paper re-examines hidden path inference in these models, using primarily a
risk-based framework. While the most common maximum a posteriori (MAP), or
Viterbi, path estimator and the minimum error, or Posterior Decoder (PD), have
long been around, other path estimators, or decoders, have been either only
hinted at or applied more recently and in dedicated applications generally
unfamiliar to the statistical learning community. Over a decade ago, however, a
family of algorithmically defined decoders aiming to hybridize the two standard
ones was proposed (Brushe et al., 1998). The present paper gives a careful
analysis of this hybridization approach, identifies several problems and issues
with it and other previously proposed approaches, and proposes practical
resolutions of those. Furthermore, simple modifications of the classical
criteria for hidden path recognition are shown to lead to a new class of
decoders. Dynamic programming algorithms to compute these decoders in the usual
forward-backward manner are presented. A particularly interesting subclass of
such estimators can be also viewed as hybrids of the MAP and PD estimators.
Similar to previously proposed MAP-PD hybrids, the new class is parameterized
by a small number of tunable parameters. Unlike their algorithmic predecessors,
the new risk-based decoders are more clearly interpretable, and, most
importantly, work "out of the box" in practice, which is demonstrated on some
real bioinformatics tasks and data. Some further generalizations and
applications are discussed in conclusion.Comment: Section 5: corrected denominators of the scaled beta variables (pp.

Viterbi Accelerator for Embedded Processor Datapaths
We present a novel architecture for a lightweight Viterbi accelerator that can be tightly integrated inside an embedded processor. We investigate the accelerator’s impact on processor performance by using the EEMBC Viterbi benchmark and the in-house Viterbi Branch Metric kernel. Our evaluation based on the EEMBC benchmark shows that an accelerated 65-nm 2.7-ns processor datapath is 20% larger but 90% more cycle efficient than a datapath lacking the Viterbi accelerator, leading to an 87% overall energy reduction and a data throughput of 3.52 Mbit/s
Study of information transfer optimization for communication satellites
The results are presented of a study of source coding, modulation/channel coding, and systems techniques for application to teleconferencing over high data rate digital communication satellite links. Simultaneous transmission of video, voice, data, and/or graphics is possible in various teleconferencing modes and one-way, two-way, and broadcast modes are considered. A satellite channel model including filters, limiter, a TWT, detectors, and an optimized equalizer is treated in detail. A complete analysis is presented for one set of system assumptions which exclude nonlinear gain and phase distortion in the TWT. Modulation, demodulation, and channel coding are considered, based on an additive white Gaussian noise channel model which is an idealization of an equalized channel. Source coding with emphasis on video data compression is reviewed, and the experimental facility utilized to test promising techniques is fully described
A variable-rate Viterbi decoder in 130-nm CMOS: design, measurements, and cost of flexibility
This paper discusses design and measurements of a flexible Viterbi decoder fabricated in 130-nm digital CMOS. Flexibility was incorporated by providing various code rates and modulation schemes to adjust to varying channel conditions. Based on previous trade-off studies, flexible building blocks were carefully designed to cause as little area penalty as possible. The chip runs down to a minimal core supply of 0.8V. It turns out that striving for more modulation schemes is beneficial in terms of power consumption once the price is paid for accepting different code rates viz. radices in the trellis and survivor path units
Advanced digital modulation: Communication techniques and monolithic GaAs technology
Communications theory and practice are merged with state-of-the-art technology in IC fabrication, especially monolithic GaAs technology, to examine the general feasibility of a number of advanced technology digital transmission systems. Satellite-channel models with (1) superior throughput, perhaps 2 Gbps; (2) attractive weight and cost; and (3) high RF power and spectrum efficiency are discussed. Transmission techniques possessing reasonably simple architectures capable of monolithic fabrication at high speeds were surveyed. This included a review of amplitude/phase shift keying (APSK) techniques and the continuous-phase-modulation (CPM) methods, of which MSK represents the simplest case
