A QoS-Aware Scheduling Algorithm for High-Speed Railway Communication System
With the rapid development of high-speed railway (HSR), how to provide the
passengers with multimedia services has attracted increasing attention. A key
issue is to develop an effective scheduling algorithm for multiple services
with different quality of service (QoS) requirements. In this paper, we
investigate the downlink service scheduling problem in HSR network taking
account of end-to-end deadline constraints and successfully packet delivery
ratio requirements. Firstly, by exploiting the deterministic high-speed train
trajectory, we present a time-distance mapping in order to obtain the highly
dynamic link capacity effectively. Next, a novel service model is developed for
deadline constrained services with delivery ratio requirements, which enables
us to turn the delivery ratio requirement into a single queue stability
problem. Based on the Lyapunov drift, the optimal scheduling problem is
formulated and the corresponding scheduling service algorithm is proposed by
stochastic network optimization approach. Simulation results show that the
proposed algorithm outperforms the conventional schemes in terms of QoS

Energy-efficient wireless communication
In this chapter we present an energy-efficient highly adaptive network interface architecture and a novel data link layer protocol for wireless networks that provides Quality of Service (QoS) support for diverse traffic types. Due to the dynamic nature of wireless networks, adaptations in bandwidth scheduling and error control are necessary to achieve energy efficiency and an acceptable quality of service. In our approach we apply adaptability through all layers of the protocol stack, and provide feedback to the applications. In this way the applications can adapt the data streams, and the network protocols can adapt the communication parameters
Performance of CSMA in Multi-Channel Wireless Networks
We analyze the performance of CSMA in multi-channel wireless networks,
accounting for the random nature of traffic. Specifically, we assess the
ability of CSMA to fully utilize the radio resources and in turn to stabilize
the network in a dynamic setting with flow arrivals and departures. We prove
that CSMA is optimal in ad-hoc mode but not in infrastructure mode, when all
data flows originate from or are destined to some access points, due to the
inherent bias of CSMA against downlink traffic. We propose a slight
modification of CSMA, that we refer to as flow-aware CSMA, which corrects this
bias and makes the algorithm optimal in all cases. The analysis is based on
some time-scale separation assumption which is proved valid in the limit of
large flow sizes
Performance analysis of adaptive scheduling in integrated services UMTS networks
For an integrated services UMTS network serving speech and data calls, we propose, evaluate and compare different scheduling schemes, which dynamically adapt the shared data transport channel rates to the varying speech traffic load. within each cell, the assigned data transfer resources are distributed over the present data flows according to certain fairness objectives. The performance of the adaptive schemes is numerically evaluated by means of analytical performance optimisation methods in combination with Monte Carlo simulations.\ud

SymbioCity: Smart Cities for Smarter Networks
The "Smart City" (SC) concept revolves around the idea of embodying
cutting-edge ICT solutions in the very fabric of future cities, in order to
offer new and better services to citizens while lowering the city management
costs, both in monetary, social, and environmental terms. In this framework,
communication technologies are perceived as subservient to the SC services,
providing the means to collect and process the data needed to make the services
function. In this paper, we propose a new vision in which technology and SC
services are designed to take advantage of each other in a symbiotic manner.
According to this new paradigm, which we call "SymbioCity", SC services can
indeed be exploited to improve the performance of the same communication
systems that provide them with data. Suggestive examples of this symbiotic
ecosystem are discussed in the paper. The dissertation is then substantiated in
a proof-of-concept case study, where we show how the traffic monitoring service
provided by the London Smart City initiative can be used to predict the density

Joint Scheduling and ARQ for MU-MIMO Downlink in the Presence of Inter-Cell Interference
User scheduling and multiuser multi-antenna (MU-MIMO) transmission are at the
core of high rate data-oriented downlink schemes of the next-generation of
cellular systems (e.g., LTE-Advanced). Scheduling selects groups of users
according to their channels vector directions and SINR levels. However, when
scheduling is applied independently in each cell, the inter-cell interference
(ICI) power at each user receiver is not known in advance since it changes at
each new scheduling slot depending on the scheduling decisions of all
interfering base stations. In order to cope with this uncertainty, we consider
the joint operation of scheduling, MU-MIMO beamforming and Automatic Repeat
reQuest (ARQ). We develop a game-theoretic framework for this problem and build
on stochastic optimization techniques in order to find optimal scheduling and
ARQ schemes. Particularizing our framework to the case of "outage service
rates", we obtain a scheme based on adaptive variable-rate coding at the
physical layer, combined with ARQ at the Logical Link Control (ARQ-LLC). Then,
we present a novel scheme based on incremental redundancy Hybrid ARQ (HARQ)
that is able to achieve a throughput performance arbitrarily close to the
"genie-aided service rates", with no need for a genie that provides
non-causally the ICI power levels. The novel HARQ scheme is both easier to
implement and superior in performance with respect to the conventional
