    Adaptive relaying protocol multiple-input multiple-output orthogonal frequency division multiplexing systems

    In wireless broadband communications, orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) has been adopted as a promising technique to mitigate multi-path fading and provide high spectral efficiency. In addition, cooperative communication can explore spatial diversity where several users or nodes share their resources and cooperate through distributed transmission. The concatenation of the OFDM technique with relaying systems can enhance the overall performance in terms of spectral efficiency and improve robustness against the detrimental effects of fading. Hybrid relay selection is proposed to overcome the drawbacks of conventional forwarding schemes. However, exciting hybrid relay protocols may suffer some limitations when used for transmission over frequency-selective channels. The combination of cooperative protocols with OFDM systems has been extensively utilized in current wireless networks, and have become a promising solution for future high data rate broadband communication systems including 3D video transmission. This thesis covers two areas of high data rate networks. In the first part, several techniques using cooperative OFDM systems are presented including relay selection, space time block codes, resource allocation and adaptive bit and power allocation to introduce diversity. Four (4) selective OFDM relaying schemes are studied over wireless networks; selective OFDM; selective OFDMA; selective block OFDM and selective unequal block OFDM. The closed-form expression of these schemes is derived. By exploiting the broadcast nature, it is demonstrated that spatial diversity can be improved. The upper bound of outage probability for the protocols is derived. A new strategy for hybrid relay selection is proposed to improve the system performance by removing the sub-carriers that experience deep fading. The per subcarrier basis selection is considered with respect to the predefined threshold signal-to-noise ratio. The closed-form expressions of the proposed protocol in terms of bit error probability and outage probability are derived and compared with conventional hybrid relay selection. Adaptive bit and power allocation is also discussed to improve the system performance. Distributed space frequency coding applied to hybrid relay selection to obtain full spatial and full data rate transmission is explored. Two strategies, single cluster and multiple clusters, are considered for the Alamouti code at the destination by using a hybrid relay protocol. The power allocation with and without sub-carrier pairing is also investigated to mitigate the effect of multipath error propagation in frequency-selective channels. The second part of this thesis investigates the application of cooperative OFDM systems to high data rate transmission. Recently, there has been growing attention paid to 3D video transmission over broadband wireless channels. Two strategies for relay selection hybrid relay selection and first best second best are proposed to implement unequal error protection in the physical layer over error prone channels. The closed-form expressions of bit error probability and outage probability for both strategies are examined. The peak signal-to-noise ratio is presented to show the quality of reconstruction of the left and right views

    Physiological and Molecular Characterization of Crop Resistance to Abiotic Stresses

    Abiotic stress represents the main constraint for agriculture, affecting plant growth and productivity worldwide. Yield losses in agriculture will be potentiated in the future by global warming, increasing contamination, and reduced availability of fertile land. The challenge for agriculture of the present and future is that of increasing the food supply for a continuously growing human population under environmental conditions that are deteriorating in many areas of the world. Minimizing the effects of diverse types of abiotic stresses represents a matter of general concern. Research on all topics related to abiotic stress tolerance, from understanding the stress response mechanisms of plants to developing cultivars and crops tolerant to stress, is a priority. This Special Issue is focused on the physiological and molecular characterization of crop resistance to abiotic stresses, including novel research, reviews, and opinion articles covering all aspects of the responses and mechanisms of plant tolerance to abiotic. Contributions on physiological, biochemical, and molecular studies of crop responses to abiotic stresses; the description and role of stress-responsive genes; marker-assisted screening of stress-tolerant genotypes; genetic engineering; and other biotechnological approaches to improve crop tolerance were considered

    Towards more rational approaches of membrane protein stabilisation and novel structures of membrane-bound pyrophosphatase

    Membrane proteins have a range of crucial biological functions and are targeted by most prescribed drugs despite lagging behind soluble proteins when it comes to their biochemical and biophysical characterisation. A major bottleneck in membrane protein research is protein instability upon extraction. Protein stabilisation strategies are typically expensive and labour-intensive. Therefore, I contributed to the development and evaluation of two new general-purpose tools, both designed for the streamlined and rational stabilisation of membrane proteins. The first tool, the integral membrane protein stability selector (IMPROvER), predicts stabilising point-mutations in membrane proteins using three individual approaches with additive prediction power. The second tool, a novel pre-prepared and easy-to-use screen for the high-throughput identification of stabilising lipids, facilitates the structural and functional analysis of stable and physiologically relevant protein sample. Both tools were successfully employed to stabilise a range of membrane proteins with different folds, topologies and modes of action at significantly reduced cost and work effort. Moreover, engineered or natively thermostable membrane-bound pyrophosphatases (M-PPase), were studied in more detail using conventional and time-resolved X-ray crystallography. Based on structural data obtained on a pyrophosphate-energised K+-independent H+-pump, I derived an updated model of ion-selectivity that is centred on a glutamate-serine interplay at the ion-gate. This is the first model that explains ion selectivity in all M PPase subclasses when considering functional asymmetry. Indeed, complementary time-resolved structural studies of a K+-dependent Na+-pump revealed asymmetric substrate binding to M-PPase active sites. These findings give valuable mechanistic insights into key processes of M-PPase biochemistry, which are of upmost importance for structure-guided drug discovery. Ultimately, tweaking M-PPase function has the potential to address existing and emerging challenges to human health and global food security as M-PPases play a vital role in the stress resistance of pathogens or salt and drought resistance in plants

    Quality-aware Content Adaptation in Digital Video Streaming

    User-generated video has attracted a lot of attention due to the success of Video Sharing Sites such as YouTube and Online Social Networks. Recently, a shift towards live consumption of these videos is observable. The content is captured and instantly shared over the Internet using smart mobile devices such as smartphones. Large-scale platforms arise such as YouTube.Live, YouNow or Facebook.Live which enable the smartphones of users to livestream to the public. These platforms achieve the distribution of tens of thousands of low resolution videos to remote viewers in parallel. Nonetheless, the providers are not capable to guarantee an efficient collection and distribution of high-quality video streams. As a result, the user experience is often degraded, and the needed infrastructure installments are huge. Efficient methods are required to cope with the increasing demand for these video streams; and an understanding is needed how to capture, process and distribute the videos to guarantee a high-quality experience for viewers. This thesis addresses the quality awareness of user-generated videos by leveraging the concept of content adaptation. Two types of content adaptation, the adaptive video streaming and the video composition, are discussed in this thesis. Then, a novel approach for the given scenario of a live upload from mobile devices, the processing of video streams and their distribution is presented. This thesis demonstrates that content adaptation applied to each step of this scenario, ranging from the upload to the consumption, can significantly improve the quality for the viewer. At the same time, if content adaptation is planned wisely, the data traffic can be reduced while keeping the quality for the viewers high. The first contribution of this thesis is a better understanding of the perceived quality in user-generated video and its influencing factors. Subjective studies are performed to understand what affects the human perception, leading to the first of their kind quality models. Developed quality models are used for the second contribution of this work: novel quality assessment algorithms. A unique attribute of these algorithms is the usage of multiple features from different sensors. Whereas classical video quality assessment algorithms focus on the visual information, the proposed algorithms reduce the runtime by an order of magnitude when using data from other sensors in video capturing devices. Still, the scalability for quality assessment is limited by executing algorithms on a single server. This is solved with the proposed placement and selection component. It allows the distribution of quality assessment tasks to mobile devices and thus increases the scalability of existing approaches by up to 33.71% when using the resources of only 15 mobile devices. These three contributions are required to provide a real-time understanding of the perceived quality of the video streams produced on mobile devices. The upload of video streams is the fourth contribution of this work. It relies on content and mechanism adaptation. The thesis introduces the first prototypically evaluated adaptive video upload protocol (LiViU) which transcodes multiple video representations in real-time and copes with changing network conditions. In addition, a mechanism adaptation is integrated into LiViU to react to changing application scenarios such as streaming high-quality videos to remote viewers or distributing video with a minimal delay to close-by recipients. A second type of content adaptation is discussed in the fifth contribution of this work. An automatic video composition application is presented which enables live composition from multiple user-generated video streams. The proposed application is the first of its kind, allowing the in-time composition of high-quality video streams by inspecting the quality of individual video streams, recording locations and cinematographic rules. As a last contribution, the content-aware adaptive distribution of video streams to mobile devices is introduced by the Video Adaptation Service (VAS). The VAS analyzes the video content streamed to understand which adaptations are most beneficial for a viewer. It maximizes the perceived quality for each video stream individually and at the same time tries to produce as little data traffic as possible - achieving data traffic reduction of more than 80%

    Architecture exists to respond to environmental problems that affect human life, many of which are directly related to energy principles. In the early stages of man's adaptation, these challenges set the criteria for indigenous architecture. Certain formal solutions became recognised as more reliable in meeting environmental potentials and a deep appreciation of these emerged. This persisted even as the evolution of the intellect allowed man to move away from direct, survivalist responses to the environment into a more symbol -based and mutual relationship.The process of change, however, has developed into one of internationalisation. In Libya, the subject area of this thesis, building techniques are used that have no relevance to the environment. This fracture between the natural and artificial has created many problems. This thesis will research these accumulated problems by studying the city image, which lead the author to assert the role of energy in setting the criteria for environmental quality

    African Handbook of Climate Change Adaptation

    This open access book discusses current thinking and presents the main issues and challenges associated with climate change in Africa. It introduces evidences from studies and projects which show how climate change adaptation is being - and may continue to be successfully implemented in African countries. Thanks to its scope and wide range of themes surrounding climate change, the ambition is that this book will be a lead publication on the topic, which may be regularly updated and hence capture further works. Climate change is a major global challenge. However, some geographical regions are more severly affected than others. One of these regions is the African continent. Due to a combination of unfavourable socio-economic and meteorological conditions, African countries are particularly vulnerable to climate change and its impacts. The recently released IPCC special report "Global Warming of 1.5º C" outlines the fact that keeping global warming by the level of 1.5º C is possible, but also suggested that an increase by 2º C could lead to crises with crops (agriculture fed by rain could drop by 50% in some African countries by 2020) and livestock production, could damage water supplies and pose an additonal threat to coastal areas. The 5th Assessment Report produced by IPCC predicts that wheat may disappear from Africa by 2080, and that maize— a staple—will fall significantly in southern Africa. Also, arid and semi-arid lands are likely to increase by up to 8%, with severe ramifications for livelihoods, poverty eradication and meeting the SDGs. Pursuing appropriate adaptation strategies is thus vital, in order to address the current and future challenges posed by a changing climate. It is against this background that the "African Handbook of Climate Change Adaptation" is being published. It contains papers prepared by scholars, representatives from social movements, practitioners and members of governmental agencies, undertaking research and/or executing climate change projects in Africa, and working with communities across the African continent. Encompassing over 100 contribtions from across Africa, it is the most comprehensive publication on climate change adaptation in Africa ever produced
