    Fault tolerance force for redundant manipulators

    Fault tolerant manipulators maintain their trajectory even if their joint/s fails. Assuming that the manipulator is fault tolerant on its trajectory, fault tolerant compliance manipulators provide required force at their end-effector even when a joint fails. To achieve this, the contributions of the faulty joints for the force of the end-effector are required to be mapped into the proper compensating joint torques of the healthy joints to maintain the force. This paper addresses the optimal mapping to minimize the force jump due to a fault, which is the maximum effort to maintain the force when a fault occurs. The paper studies the locked joint fault/s of the redundant manipulators and it relates the force jump at the end-effector to the faults within the joints. Adding on a previous study to maintain the trajectory, in here the objective is to providing fault tolerant force at the end-effector of the redundant manipulators. This optimal mapping with minimum force jump is presented using matrix perturbation model. And the force jump is calculated through this model for single and multiple joints fault. The proposed optimal mapping is used in different fault scenarios for a 5-DOF manipulator; also it is deployed to compensate the force at the end-effector for the 5-DOF manipulator through simulation study and the results are presented

    Impact analysis of actuator torque degradation on the IRB 120 robot performance using simscape-based model

    Actuators in a robot system may become faulty during their life cycle. Locked joints, free-moving joints, and the loss of actuator torque are common faulty types of robot joints where the actuators fail. Locked and free-moving joint issues are addressed by many published articles, whereas the actuator torque loss still opens attractive investigation challenges. The objectives of this study are to classify the loss of robot actuator torque, named actuator torque degradation, into three different cases: Boundary degradation of torque, boundary degradation of torque rate, and proportional degradation of torque, and to analyze their impact on the performance of a typical 6-DOF robot (i.e., the IRB 120 robot). Typically, controllers of robots are not pre-designed specifically for anticipating these faults. To isolate and focus on the impact of only actuator torque degradation faults, all robot parameters are assumed to be known precisely, and a popular closed-loop controller is used to investigate the robot’s responses under these faults. By exploiting MATLAB-the reliable simulation environment, a simscape-based quasi-physical model of the robot is built and utilized instead of an actual expensive prototype. The simulation results indicate that the robot responses cannot follow the desired path properly in most fault cases

    Optimal resource allocation method and fault-tolerant control for redundant robots

    Resource coordination and allocation strategies are proposed to reduce the probability of failure by aiming at the problem that the robot cannot continue to work after joint failure. Firstly, the principal component analysis method under unsupervised branches in machine learning is used to analyze the reliability function and various indexes of the robot to obtain the comprehensive evaluation function. Then, based on the fault-tolerant-control inverse-kinematics optimal algorithm, each joint can be scheduled by weighted processing. Finally, the comprehensive evaluation function is used as an index to evaluate the probability of fault occurrence, and the weight is defined to realize the coordinated resource allocation of redundant robots. Taking the planar four revolute joints (4R) redundant robot as an example, the algorithm control is compared. Based on reasonable modeling and physical verification, the results show that the method of optimal resource coordination and allocation is effective.</p

    Kinematic design and motion planning of fault tolerant robots with locked joint failures

    2019 Summer.Includes bibliographical references.The problem of kinematic design and motion planning of fault tolerant robots with locked joint failure is studied in this work. In kinematic design, the problem of designing optimally fault tolerant robots for equal joint failure probabilities is first explored. A measure of local fault tolerance for equal joint failure probabilities has previously been defined based on the properties of the singular values of the Jacobian matrix. Based on this measure, one can determine a Jacobian that is optimal. Because these measures are solely based on the singular values of the Jacobian, permutation of the columns does not affect the optimality. Therefore, when one generates a kinematic robot design from this optimal Jacobian, there will be 7! robot designs with the same locally optimal fault tolerant property. This work shows how to analyze and organize the kinematic structure of these 7! designs in terms of their Denavit and Hartenberg (DH) parameters. Furthermore, global fault tolerant measures are defined in order to evaluate the different designs. It is shown that robot designs that are very similar in terms of DH parameters, e.g., robots generated from Jacobians where the columns are in reverse order, can have very different global properties. Finally, a computationally efficient approach to calculate the global pre- and post-failure dexterity measures is presented and used to identify two Pareto optimal robot designs. The workspaces for these optimal designs are also shown. Then, the problem of designing optimally fault tolerant robots for different joint failure probabilities is considered. A measure of fault tolerance for different joint failure probabilities is defined based on the properties of the singular values of the Jacobian after failures. Using this measure, methods to design optimally fault tolerant robots for an arbitrary set of joint failure probabilities and multiple cases of joint failure probabilities are introduced separately. Given an arbitrary set of joint failure probabilities, the optimal null space that optimizes the fault tolerant measure is derived, and the associated isotropic Jacobians are constructed. The kinematic parameters of the optimally fault tolerant robots are then generated from these Jacobians. One special case, i.e., how to construct the optimal Jacobian of spatial 7R robots for both positioning and orienting is further discussed. For multiple cases of joint failure probabilities, the optimal robot is designed through optimizing the sum of the fault tolerant measures for all the possible joint failure probabilities. This technique is illustrated on planar 3R robots, and it is shown that there exists a family of optimal robots. After the optimally fault tolerant robots are designed, the problem of planning the optimal trajectory with minimum probability of task failure for a set of point-to-point tasks, after experiencing locked joint failures, is studied. The proposed approach first develops a method to calculate the probability of task failure for an arbitrary trajectory, where the trajectory is divided into small segments, and the probability of task failure of each segment is calculated based on its failure scenarios. Then, a motion planning algorithm is proposed to find the optimal trajectory with minimum probability of task failure. There are two cases. The trajectory in the first case is the optimal trajectory from the start configuration to the intersection of the bounding boxes of all the task points. In the other case, all the configurations along the self-motion manifold of task point 1 need to be checked, and the optimal trajectory is the trajectory with minimum probability of task failure among them. The proposed approach is demonstrated on planar 2R redundant robots, illustrating the effectiveness of the algorithm

    Trajectory Optimization for Velocity Jumps Reduction considering the Unexpectedness Characteristics of Space Manipulator Joint-Locked Failure

    Aiming at reducing joint velocity jumps caused by an unexpected joint-locked failure during space manipulator on-orbit operations without shutting down manipulator, trajectory optimization strategy considering the unexpectedness characteristics of joint-locked failure is proposed in the paper, which can achieve velocity jumps reduction in both operation space and joint space simultaneously. In the strategy, velocity in operation space concerning task completion directly is treated as equality constraints, and velocity in joint space concerning motion performance is treated as objective function. Global compensation vector which consists of coefficient, gradient of manipulability, and orthogonal matrix of null space is constructed to minimize the objective function. For each particular failure time, unique optimal coefficient can be obtained when the objective function is minimal. As a basis, a method for optimal coefficient function fitting is proposed based on a priori failure information (possible failure time and the corresponding optimal coefficient) to guarantee the unexpectedness characteristics of joint-locked failure. Simulations are implemented to validate the efficiency of trajectory optimization strategy in reducing velocity jumps in both joint space and operation space. And the feasibility of coefficient function is also verified in reducing velocity jump no matter when joint-locked failure occurs

    A Contribution to the Design of Highly Redundant Compliant Aerial Manipulation Systems

    Es ist vorhersehbar, dass die Luftmanipulatoren in den nĂ€chsten Jahrzehnten fĂŒr viele Aufgaben eingesetzt werden, die entweder zu gefĂ€hrlich oder zu teuer sind, um sie mit herkömmlichen Methoden zu bewĂ€ltigen. In dieser Arbeit wird eine neuartige Lösung fĂŒr die Gesamtsteuerung von hochredundanten Luftmanipulationssystemen vorgestellt. Die Ergebnisse werden auf eine Referenzkonfiguration angewendet, die als universelle Plattform fĂŒr die DurchfĂŒhrung verschiedener Luftmanipulationsaufgaben etabliert wird. Diese Plattform besteht aus einer omnidirektionalen Drohne und einem seriellen Manipulator. Um den modularen Regelungsentwurf zu gewĂ€hrleisten, werden zwei rechnerisch effiziente Algorithmen untersucht, um den virtuellen Eingang den Aktuatorbefehlen zuzuordnen. Durch die Integration eines auf einem kĂŒnstlichen neuronalen Netz basierenden Diagnosemoduls und der rekonfigurierbaren Steuerungszuordnung in den Regelkreis, wird die Fehlertoleranz fĂŒr die Drohne erzielt. Außerdem wird die MotorsĂ€ttigung durch Rekonfiguration der Geschwindigkeits- und Beschleunigungsprofile behandelt. FĂŒr die Beobachtung der externen KrĂ€fte und Drehmomente werden zwei Filter vorgestellt. Dies ist notwendig, um ein nachgiebiges Verhalten des Endeffektors durch die achsenselektive Impedanzregelung zu erreichen. Unter Ausnutzung der Redundanz des vorgestellten Luftmanipulators wird ein Regler entworfen, der nicht nur die Referenz der Endeffektor-Bewegung verfolgt, sondern auch priorisierte sekundĂ€re Aufgaben ausfĂŒhrt. This thesis presents a novel solution for the overall control of highly redundant aerial manipulation systems. The results are applied to a reference configuration established as a universal platform for performing various aerial manipulation tasks. The platform consists of an omnidirectional multirotor UAV and a serial manipulator. To ensure modular control design, two computationally efficient algorithms are studied to allocate the virtual input to actuator commands. Fault tolerance of the aerial vehicle is achieved by integrating a diagnostic module based on an artificial neural network and the reconfigurable control allocation into the control loop. Besides, the risk of input saturation of individual rotors is minimized by predicting and reconfiguring the speed and acceleration responses. Two filter-based observers are presented to provide the knowledge of external forces and torques, which is necessary to achieve compliant behavior of the end-effector through an axis-selective impedance control in the outer loop. Exploiting the redundancy of the proposed aerial manipulator, the author has designed a control law to achieve the desired end-effector motion and execute secondary tasks in order of priority.     Advancing Measurement Science to Assess Monitoring, Diagnostics, and Prognostics for Manufacturing Robotics

    Unexpected equipment downtime is a ‘pain point’ for manufacturers, especially in that this event usually translates to financial losses. To minimize this pain point, manufacturers are developing new health monitoring, diagnostic, prognostic, and maintenance (collectively known as prognostics and health management (PHM)) techniques to advance the state-of-the-art in their maintenance strategies. The manufacturing community has a wide-range of needs with respect to the advancement and integration of PHM technologies to enhance manufacturing robotic system capabilities. Numerous researchers, including personnel from the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), have identified a broad landscape of barriers and challenges to advancing PHM technologies. One such challenge is the verification and validation of PHM technology through the development of performance metrics, test methods, reference datasets, and supporting tools. Besides documenting and presenting the research landscape, NIST personnel are actively researching PHM for robotics to promote the development of innovative sensing technology and prognostic decision algorithms and to produce a positional accuracy test method that emphasizes the identification of static and dynamic positional accuracy. The test method development will provide manufacturers with a methodology that will allow them to quickly assess the positional health of their robot systems along with supporting the verification and validation of PHM techniques for the robot system

    Observer-based robust fault estimation for fault-tolerant control

    A control system is fault-tolerant if it possesses the capability of optimizing the system stability and admissible performance subject to bounded faults, complexity and modeling uncertainty. Based on this definition this thesis is concerned with the theoretical developments of the combination of robust fault estimation (FE) and robust active fault tolerant control (AFTC) for systems with both faults and uncertainties.This thesis develops robust strategies for AFTC involving a joint problem of on-line robust FE and robust adaptive control. The disturbances and modeling uncertainty affect the FE and FTC performance. Hence, the proposed robust observer-based fault estimator schemes are combined with several control methods to achieve the desired system performance and robust active fault tolerance. The controller approaches involve concepts of output feedback control, adaptive control, robust observer-based state feedback control. A new robust FE method has been developed initially to take into account the joint effect of both fault and disturbance signals, thereby rejecting the disturbances and enhancing the accuracy of the fault estimation. This is then extended to encompass the robustness with respect to modeling uncertainty.As an extension to the robust FE and FTC scheme a further development is made for direct application to smooth non-linear systems via the use of linear parameter-varying systems (LPV) modeling.The main contributions of the research are thus:- The development of a robust observer-based FE method and integration design for the FE and AFTC systems with the bounded time derivative fault magnitudes, providing the solution based on linear matrix inequality (LMI) methodology. A stability proof for the integrated design of the robust FE within the FTC system.- An improvement is given to the proposed robust observer-based FE method and integrated design for FE and AFTC systems under the existence of different disturbance structures.- New guidance for the choice of learning rate of the robust FE algorithm.- Some improvement compared with the recent literature by considering the FTC problem in a more general way, for example by using LPV modeling
