    Large scale estimation of arterial traffic and structural analysis of traffic patterns using probe vehicles

    International audienceEstimating and analyzing traffi c conditions on large arterial networks is an inherently diffi cult task. The fi rst goal of this article is to demonstrate how arterial tra c conditions can be estimated using sparsely sampled GPS probe vehicle data provided by a small percentage of vehicles. Traffi c signals, stop signs, and other flow inhibitors make estimating arterial traffi c conditions significantly more diffi cult than estimating highway traffi c conditions. To address these challenges, we propose a statistical modeling framework that leverages a large historical database and relies on the fact that tra ffic conditions tend to follow distinct patterns over the course of a week. This model is operational in North California, as part of the Mobile Millennium tra ffic estimation platform. The second goal of the article is to provide a global network-level analysis of tra ffic patterns using matrix factorization and clustering methods. These techniques allow us to characterize spatial tra ffic patterns in the network and to analyze traffi c dynamics at a network scale. We identify tra ffic patterns that indicate intrinsic spatio-temporal characteristics over the entire network and give insight into the traffi c dynamics of an entire city. By integrating our estimation technique with our analysis method, we achieve a general framework for extracting, processing and interpreting traffi c information using GPS probe vehicle data

    Estimation and Control of Traffic Relying on Vehicular Connectivity

    Vehicular traffic flow is essential, yet complicated to analyze. It describes the interplay among vehicles and with the infrastructure. A better understanding of traf-fic would benefit both individuals and the whole society in terms of improving safety, energy efficiency, and reducing environmental impacts. A large body of research ex-ists on estimation and control of vehicular traffic in which, however, vehicles were assumed not to be able to share information due to the limits of technology. With the development of wireless communication and various sensor devices, Connected Vehicles(CV) are emerging which are able to detect, access, and share information with each other and with the infrastructure in real time. Connected Vehicle Technology (CVT) has been attracting more and more attentions from different fields. The goal of this dissertation is to develop approaches to estimate and control vehicular traffic as well as individual vehicles relying on CVT. On one hand, CVT sig-nificantly enriches the data from individuals and the traffic, which contributes to the accuracy of traffic estimation algorithms. On the other hand, CVT enables commu-nication and information sharing between vehicles and infrastructure, and therefore allows vehicles to achieve better control and/or coordination among themselves and with smart infrastructure. The first part of this dissertation focused on estimation of traffic on freeways and city streets. We use data available from on road sensors and also from probe One of the most important traffic performance measures is travel time. How-ever it is affected by various factors, and freeways and arterials have different travel time characteristics. In this dissertation we first propose a stochastic model-based approach to freeway travel-time prediction. The approach uses the Link-Node Cell Transmission Model (LN-CTM) to model traffic and provides a probability distribu-tion for travel time. The probability distribution is generated using a Monte Carlo simulation and an Online Expectation Maximization clustering algorithm. Results show that the approach is able to generate a reasonable multimodal distribution for travel-time. For arterials, this dissertation presents methods for estimating statistics of travel time by utilizing sparse vehicular probe data. A public data feed from transit buses in the City of San Francisco is used. We divide each link into shorter segments, and propose iterative methods for allocating travel time statistics to each segment. Inspired by K-mean and Expectation Maximization (EM) algorithms, we iteratively update the mean and variance of travel time for each segment based on historical probe data until convergence. Based on segment travel time statistics, we then pro-pose a method to estimate the maximum likelihood trajectory (MLT) of a probe vehicle in between two data updates on arterial roads. The results are compared to high frequency ground truth data in multiple scenarios, which demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed approach. The second part of this dissertation emphasize on control approaches enabled by vehicular connectivity. Estimation and prediction of surrounding vehicle behaviors and upcoming traffic makes it possible to improve driving performance.     DYNAMIC FREEWAY TRAVEL TIME PREDICTION USING SINGLE LOOP DETECTOR AND INCIDENT DATA

    The accurate estimation of travel time is valuable for a variety of transportation applications such as freeway performance evaluation and real-time traveler information. Given the extensive availability of traffic data collected by intelligent transportation systems, a variety of travel time estimation methods have been developed. Despite limited success under light traffic conditions, traditional corridor travel time prediction methods have suffered various drawbacks. First, most of these methods are developed based on data generated by dual-loop detectors that contain average spot speeds. However, single-loop detectors (and other devices that emulate its operation) are the most commonly used devices in traffic monitoring systems. There has not been a reliable methodology for travel time prediction based on data generated by such devices due to the lack of speed measurements. Moreover, the majority of existing studies focus on travel time estimation. Secondly, the effect of traffic progression along the freeway has not been considered in the travel time prediction process. Moreover, the impact of incidents on travel time estimates has not been effectively accounted for in existing studies.The objective of this dissertation is to develop a methodology for dynamic travel time prediction based on continuous data generated by single-loop detectors (and similar devices) and incident reports generated by the traffic monitoring system. This method involves multiple-step-ahead prediction for flow rate and occupancy in real time. A seasonal autoregressive integrated moving average (SARIMA) model is developed with an embedded adaptive predictor. This predictor adjusts the prediction error based on traffic data that becomes available every five minutes at each station. The impact of incidents is evaluated based on estimates of incident duration and the queue incurred.Tests and comparative analyses show that this method is able to capture the real-time characteristics of the traffic and provide more accurate travel time estimates particularly when incidents occur. The sensitivities of the models to the variations of the flow and occupancy data are analyzed and future research has been identified.The potential of this methodology in dealing with less than perfect data sources has been demonstrated. This provides good opportunity for the wide application of the proposed method since single-loop type detectors are most extensively installed in various intelligent transportation system deployments

    Multi-Sensor Data Fusion for Travel Time Estimation

    The importance of travel time estimation has increased due to the central role it plays in a number of emerging intelligent transport systems and services including Advanced Traveller Information Systems (ATIS), Urban Traffic Control (UTC), Dynamic Route Guidance (DRG), Active Traffic Management (ATM), and network performance monitoring. Along with the emerging of new sensor technologies, the much greater volumes of near real time data provided by these new sensor systems create opportunities for significant improvement in travel time estimation. Data fusion as a recent technique leads to a promising solution to this problem. This thesis presents the development and testing of new methods of multi-sensor data fusion for the accurate, reliable and robust estimation of travel time. This thesis reviews the state-of-art data fusion approaches and its application in transport domain, and discusses both of opportunities and challenging of applying data fusion into travel time estimation in a heterogeneous real time data environment. For a particular England highway scenario where ILDs and ANPR data are largely available, a simple but practical fusion method is proposed to estimate the travel time based on a novel relationship between space-mean-speed and time-mean-speed. In developing a general fusion framework which is able to fuse ILDs, GPS and ANPR data, the Kalman filter is identified as the most appropriate fundamental fusion technique upon which to construct the required framework. This is based both on the ability of the Kalman filter to flexibly accommodate well-established traffic flow models which describe the internal physical relation between the observed variables and objective estimates and on its ability to integrate and propagate in a consistent fashion the uncertainty associated with different data sources. Although the standard linear Kalman filter has been used for multi-sensor travel time estimation in the previous research, the novelty of this research is to develop a nonlinear Kalman filter (EKF and UKF) fusion framework which improves the estimation performance over those methods based on the linear Kalman filter. This proposed framework is validated by both of simulation and real-world scenarios, and is demonstrated the effectiveness of estimating travel time by fusing multi-sensor sources
