The thermochemical complexities of PS converting have now been represented within a mixed-integer linear program (MILP). This is the first time that PS converting has been treated within a mathematical programming framework, hence a major advancement in the operations research of copper and nickel smelters. The MILP framework is now functional, and can be used to construct optimal daily production schedules. The framework offers flexibility in the definition of system constraints and objective functions. This flexibility can accommodate the formulation of alternative modes of operation for smelters. The MILP framework can now be marketed as industrial software, to produce optimal daily schedules, and allow smelters to change their mode of operation in accordance to plant and market conditions. The framework has been created using a methodology that is typical of mathematical programming, but which had never been adapted to Peirce-Smith converting. Firstly, the problem has been posed in appropriately general terms; indeed, the PS Converter Problem is to coordinate Peirce-Smith converters with other objects in the smelter, so as to maximize production within a fixed period of time, while respecting chemical, volumetric and thermal constraints. Secondly, the various components and dimensions of the system have been represented using general algebraic structures, such as sets, parameters and variables. Thirdly, these components have been related to each other in a manner that can be supported by solution techniques. The solution techniques for MILP are well established. However, it was initially unclear what degree of simplification would be required in order to fit the PS Converter Problem into a hypothetical MILP framework. Given the vast scope of problems that have already been treated using MILP, it seemed plausible that the PS Converter Problem would require only minor simplifications. The new MILP framework has indeed required some simplification. More precisely, the framework imposes an artificial rigidity on two classes of temperature variables: nominal offgas temperatures, and skimming temperatures. These simplifications can be considered minor, since there are existing software tools that do not even treat these quantities as variables. Moreover, it now seems plausible to extend the current formulation into a nonlinear framework that would provide a more intensive and realistic treatment of the offgas and skimming temperatures. The results of this study have a considerable appeal to the copper and nickel industries, since the efficient operation of a smelter is directly linked to its scheduling practice. Following the successes of the current work, superficial efforts will cause major changes in the daily operations of copper and nickel smelters

Optimization of natural resource management: Application to French copper cycle

An innovative resource flow optimization model is proposed that aims at helping decision makers to choose the best resource management policies at national and international scales. This model has been developed and validated on French copper cycle, but can easily be extended to any country or metal. A mathematical formulation of all the in- and outflows of the resource, as well as stocks in the technosphere and waste management, including recycling, has been developed. The complexity of resource cycle led to the introduction of 47 decision variables and resulted in a Mixed-Integer Non-Linear Programming formulation. The resource cycle efficiency has been assessed through four indicators regarding costs, greenhouse gas emissions, energy consumption and resource losses. The NSGA II genetic algorithm methodology has been selected as an optimization strategy. Monobjective optimizations have firstly been conducted for each of the four criteria: the results showed that very different management strategies are needed depending on the targeted criteria. Multiobjective optimizations have thus been conducted coupled with the decision support tool TOPSIS to find an optimal compromise solution. As expected, the selected solution highlights the importance of developing a recycling channel for Waste from Electrical and Electronic Equipment in France

The research investigates the quality perceptions of concrete artifacts from an industrial design standpoint. In order to document and examine how the material is being used and perceived nowadays, the study looks into the evolution of concrete technologies including its recipes, manufacturing techniques, and uses, as well as its appraisals. A literature review helped us understand the problem field and organize the data amassed in order to find answers to our research questions. We were thus able to identify the critical milestones that triggered change throughout concrete’s historical evolution, as well as gather different testimonies of its perceptions within various contexts. Qualitative research methods were used to interpret our findings. We validated the data based on selected cases as well as non-participatory empirical observations of urban concrete artifacts from a first-person view. This method is influenced by the author’s lived experiences, cultural background, and disciplinary gaze. Therefore, it was necessary to complement the author’s interpretation by triangulating the data retrieved with information gathered from historical, scientific, technical, and mediatic literature. The results were organized and analyzed using various analytical tools and methods. Timeline mappings were used to isolate and illustrate critical milestones triggering change and important developments (e.g. the discovery of Portland Cement, etc.). Categorizations helped us clarify and compare the data gathered to provide a more specific overview of concrete recipes and uses (e.g. primitive – modern concretes, structural – non-structural recipes, etc.). Semantic mappings allowed us to interpret the complied testimonies on how concrete artifacts are perceived in addition to helping us isolate semantic qualities within a bipolar semantic space (e.g. concrete is ugly – beautiful, concrete is cold – warm, etc.). Lastly, a product and material experiences framework (Desmet & Hekkert, 2007) was used to interpret concrete artifacts’ appraisals as found within the testimonies retrieved, in addition to the first-person empirical observations. The research revealed that concrete’s quality perception is facing a dualism which draws attention to its ecological footprint as well as its surface’s premature deterioration with time. Although many seem to appreciate the material’s versatility, accessibility, and structural performance, the dualism can be partially attributed to the evolving collective consciousness which makes actors more aware of concrete’s environmental impacts across its lifecycle. The study thus showed that, despite modern society’s production and consumption habits which focus on the superficial perfection of the material world, ideologies are seen to be evolving and are increasingly interested in more sustainable practices and lifestyles. This can help motivate designers to seek inspiration from emotionally-durable and resilient principles, thus allowing them to better address urban challenges. The latest trends revealed new concrete mixes (e.g. substitution of Portland Cement with by-products of other industries, etc.) and manufacturing techniques (e.g. 3D-printing, etc.) which can offer eco-friendly and innovative alternatives to traditional concrete productions. These emerging solutions are seen to pave the way for unexpected applications in various fields (e.g., product design, art, cinematography, etc.), thus attracting other disciplines beyond engineering and architecture. The changing paradigm in the perception of concrete artifacts shows that value and beauty are not always associated with superficial perfection. In fact, more and more actors are found to reject premature obsolescence by embracing materials’ natural and imperfect behavior as they age with time

University of Missouri--Kansas City, 2021This study examines relationships between pediatric lead poisoning and the built environment. Focusing on Kansas City, Missouri between the years 2000 and 2013 this dissertation informs policy options and identifies under-explored lines of inquiry related to pediatric lead poisoning. The dissertation extends the social surplus approach to economic modeling into a discussion of the production of pediatric lead poisoning. This dissertation grounds disparities in pediatric lead poisoning in an interdisciplinary context integrating biology, health effects, exposure pathways, social history, and economic theory into a research agenda. The original contribution of this dissertation is comprised of three interconnected parts: 1) the identification and assembly of an expansive data library for observing lead in the built environment, 2) the development of a warranted geocoding process to match 14 years of pediatric blood lead data to a parcel‐level geography which is inconsistent from year to year, 3) and exploratory empirical investigation of the assembled and associated geocoded data. Using a cross section of observational data, I estimate a series of ordinary least squares multiple regression models relating child, housing, and proximity focused explanatory variables to changes in the blood lead levels in children. The dissertation concludes with a consideration of public policies aimed at preventing pediatric lead poisoning and possible extensions of the assembled data.Introduction -- Childhood lead poisoning in an economic context -- The nature of lead's toxicity and a review of its effects -- A social history of lead poisoning -- GIS, Epidemiology, modeling risk factors -- Data, geocoding, assembly -- Statistical analysis -- Policy discussion -- Appendix A.
