    Linear active disturbance rejection control of waste heat recovery systems with organic Rankine cycles

    In this paper, a linear active disturbance rejection controller is proposed for a waste heat recovery system using an organic Rankine cycle process, whose model is obtained by applying the system identification technique. The disturbances imposed on the waste heat recovery system are estimated through an extended linear state observer and then compensated by a linear feedback control strategy. The proposed control strategy is applied to a 100 kW waste heat recovery system to handle the power demand variations of grid and process disturbances. The effectiveness of this controller is verified via a simulation study, and the results demonstrate that the proposed strategy can provide satisfactory tracking performance and disturbance rejection

    A new distributed MPC algorithm for the regulation of dynamically coupled subsystems is presented in this paper. The current control action is computed via two robust controllers working in a nested fashion. The inner controller builds a nominal reference trajectory from a decentralized perspective. The outer controller uses this information to take into account the effects of the coupling and generate a distributed control action. The tube-based approach to robustness is employed. The main idea of the method is to periodically repartition the electrical power network into a group of self-sufficient interconnected microgrids. In this regard, a distributed graph-based partitioning algorithm is proposed. Having a group of self-sufficient microgrids allows the decomposition of the centralized dynamic economic dispatch problem into local economic dispatch problems for the microgrids. In the overall scheme, each microgrid must cooperate with its neighbors to perform repartitioning periodically and solve a decentralized MPC-based optimization problem at each time instant. In comparison to the approaches based on distributed optimization, the proposed scheme requires less intensive communication since the microgrids do not need to communicate at each time instant, at the cost of suboptimality of the solutions.     Controller partitioning for integrated flight/propulsion control implementation

    The notion of partitioning a centralized controller into a decentralized, hierarchical structure suitable for integrated flight/propulsion control (IFPC) implementation is discussed. A systematic procedure is developed for determining partitioned airframe and engine subsystem controllers (subcontrollers), with the desired interconnection structure, that approximate the closed-loop performance and robustness characteristics of a given centralized controller. The procedure is demonstrated by application to IFPC design for a Short Take-Off and Vertical Landing (STOVL) aircraft in the landing approach to hover transition flight phase

    Educational software tool for decoupling control in wind turbines applied to a lab‐scale system

    This paper presents an educational software tool, called wtControlGUI, whose main purpose is to show the applicability and performance of different decoupling control strategies in wind turbines. Nowadays wind turbines are a very important field in control engineering. Therefore, from an educational point of view, the tool also aims to improve the learning of multivariable control concepts applied on this control field. In addition, wtControlGUI allows for testing and control of a lab-scale system which emulates the dynamic response of a largescale wind turbine. The designed graphical user interface essentially allows simulation and experimental testing of decoupling networks and other multivariable methodologies, such as robust and decentralized control strategies. The tool is available for master degree students in control engineering. A survey was performed to evaluate the effectiveness of the proposed tool when used in educational related tasks
