Certified Reinforcement Learning with Logic Guidance
This paper proposes the first model-free Reinforcement Learning (RL)
framework to synthesise policies for unknown, and continuous-state Markov
Decision Processes (MDPs), such that a given linear temporal property is
satisfied. We convert the given property into a Limit Deterministic Buchi
Automaton (LDBA), namely a finite-state machine expressing the property.
Exploiting the structure of the LDBA, we shape a synchronous reward function
on-the-fly, so that an RL algorithm can synthesise a policy resulting in traces
that probabilistically satisfy the linear temporal property. This probability
(certificate) is also calculated in parallel with policy learning when the
state space of the MDP is finite: as such, the RL algorithm produces a policy
that is certified with respect to the property. Under the assumption of finite
state space, theoretical guarantees are provided on the convergence of the RL
algorithm to an optimal policy, maximising the above probability. We also show
that our method produces ''best available'' control policies when the logical
property cannot be satisfied. In the general case of a continuous state space,
we propose a neural network architecture for RL and we empirically show that
the algorithm finds satisfying policies, if there exist such policies. The
performance of the proposed framework is evaluated via a set of numerical
examples and benchmarks, where we observe an improvement of one order of
magnitude in the number of iterations required for the policy synthesis,

Behavior composition optimisation
The behavior composition problem involves automatic synthesis of a controller that is able to “realize” (i.e., implement) a desired target specification by suitably controlling a collection of already available, partially controllable, behaviors running in a partially predictable shared environment. A behavior in our context refers to an already existing functionality such as the logic of a device, a service, a standalone component, etc; whereas a target specification represents the desired non-existent functionality that is meant to be obtained through the available behaviors. Previous work in behavior composition has exclusively aimed at synthesising exact controllers, those that bring about the desired specification completely. One open issue has resisted principled solutions: if the target specification cannot be completely implemented, is there a way to realize it “optimally”? In this doctoral thesis, we propose qualitative and quantitative optimisation frameworks that are able to accommodate composition problems that do not admit the “perfect” coordinating controller. In the qualitative setting, we rely on the formal notion of simulation to define realizable fragments of a target specification and show the existence of a unique supremal realizable fragment for a given problem instance. In addition, we extend the qualitative framework by introducing exogenous uncontrollable events to represent observable contingencies. In the quantitative setting, we provide a decision theoretic approach to behavior composition by quantifying the uncertainties present in the domain. In all cases, we provide effective techniques to compute optimal solutions and study their computational properties
On the analysis of stochastic timed systems
The formal methods approach to develop reliable and efficient safety- or performance-critical systems is to construct mathematically precise models of such systems on which properties of interest, such as safety guarantees or performance requirements, can be verified automatically. In this thesis, we present techniques that extend the reach of exhaustive and statistical model checking to verify reachability and reward-based properties of compositional behavioural models that support quantitative aspects such as real time and randomised decisions.
We present two techniques that allow sound statistical model checking for the nondeterministic-randomised model of Markov decision processes. We investigate the relationship between two different definitions of the model of probabilistic timed automata, as well as potential ways to apply statistical model checking. Stochastic timed automata allow nondeterministic choices as well as nondeterministic and stochastic delays, and we present the first exhaustive model checking algorithm that allows their analysis. All the approaches introduced in this thesis are implemented as part of the Modest Toolset, which supports the construction and verification of models specified in the formal modelling language Modest. We conclude by applying this language and toolset to study novel distributed control strategies for photovoltaic microgenerators

This open access two-volume set LNCS 10980 and 10981 constitutes the refereed proceedings of the 30th International Conference on Computer Aided Verification, CAV 2018, held in Oxford, UK, in July 2018. Tools and Algorithms for the Construction and Analysis of Systems
This open access book constitutes the proceedings of the 28th International Conference on Tools and Algorithms for the Construction and Analysis of Systems, TACAS 2022, which was held during April 2-7, 2022, in Munich, Germany, as part of the European Joint Conferences on Theory and Practice of Software, ETAPS 2022. The 46 full papers and 4 short papers presented in this volume were carefully reviewed and selected from 159 submissions. The proceedings also contain 16 tool papers of the affiliated competition SV-Comp and 1 paper consisting of the competition report. TACAS is a forum for researchers, developers, and users interested in rigorously based tools and algorithms for the construction and analysis of systems. The conference aims to bridge the gaps between different communities with this common interest and to support them in their quest to improve the utility, reliability, exibility, and efficiency of tools and algorithms for building computer-controlled systems
Automatic Verification of Concurrent Stochastic Systems
Automated verification techniques for stochastic games allow formal reasoning
about systems that feature competitive or collaborative behaviour among
rational agents in uncertain or probabilistic settings. Existing tools and
techniques focus on turn-based games, where each state of the game is
controlled by a single player, and on zero-sum properties, where two players or
coalitions have directly opposing objectives. In this paper, we present
automated verification techniques for concurrent stochastic games (CSGs), which
provide a more natural model of concurrent decision making and interaction. We
also consider (social welfare) Nash equilibria, to formally identify scenarios
where two players or coalitions with distinct goals can collaborate to optimise
their joint performance. We propose an extension of the temporal logic rPATL
for specifying quantitative properties in this setting and present
corresponding algorithms for verification and strategy synthesis for a variant
of stopping games. For finite-horizon properties the computation is exact,
while for infinite-horizon it is approximate using value iteration. For
zero-sum properties it requires solving matrix games via linear programming,
and for equilibria-based properties we find social welfare or social cost Nash
equilibria of bimatrix games via the method of labelled polytopes through an
SMT encoding. We implement this approach in PRISM-games, which required
extending the tool's modelling language for CSGs, and apply it to case studies
from domains including robotics, computer security and computer networks,
explicitly demonstrating the benefits of both CSGs and equilibria-based
properties

IST Austria Thesis
This dissertation concerns the automatic verification of probabilistic systems and programs with arrays by statistical and logical methods. Although statistical and logical methods are different in nature, we show that they can be successfully combined for system analysis. In the first part of the dissertation we present a new statistical algorithm for the verification of probabilistic systems with respect to unbounded properties, including linear temporal logic. Our algorithm often performs faster than the previous approaches, and at the same time requires less information about the system. In addition, our method can be generalized to unbounded quantitative properties such as mean-payoff bounds. In the second part, we introduce two techniques for comparing probabilistic systems. Probabilistic systems are typically compared using the notion of equivalence, which requires the systems to have the equal probability of all behaviors. However, this notion is often too strict, since probabilities are typically only empirically estimated, and any imprecision may break the relation between processes. On the one hand, we propose to replace the Boolean notion of equivalence by a quantitative distance of similarity. For this purpose, we introduce a statistical framework for estimating distances between Markov chains based on their simulation runs, and we investigate which distances can be approximated in our framework. On the other hand, we propose to compare systems with respect to a new qualitative logic, which expresses that behaviors occur with probability one or a positive probability. This qualitative analysis is robust with respect to modeling errors and applicable to many domains. In the last part, we present a new quantifier-free logic for integer arrays, which allows us to express counting. Counting properties are prevalent in array-manipulating programs, however they cannot be expressed in the quantified fragments of the theory of arrays.
