Environmental protection and economic growth
This paper explores the link between environmental policy and economic growth by employing an extension of the AK Growth Model. We include a state equation for renewable natural resources. We assume that the change in environmental regulations induces costs and that economic agents also derive some utility from capital stock accumulation vis-`a-vis the environment. Using the Hopf bifurcation theorem, we show that cyclical environmental policy strategies are optimal, providing theoretical support for the Environmental Kuznets Curve.
An agent-based approach for the dynamic and decentralized service reconfiguration in collaborative production scenarios
Future industrial systems endorse the implementation of innovative paradigms addressing the continuous flexibility, reconfiguration, and evolution to face the volatility of dynamic markets demanding complex and customized products. Smart manufacturing relies on the capability to adapt and evolve to face changes, particularly by identifying, on-the-fly, opportunities to reconfigure its behavior and functionalities and offer new and more adapted services. This paper introduces an agent-based approach for service reconfiguration that allows the identification of the opportunities for reconfiguration in a pro-active and dynamic manner, and the implementation on-the-fly of the best strategies for the service reconfiguration that will lead to a better production efficiency. The developed prototype for a flexible manufacturing system case study allowed to verify the feasibility of greedy local service reconfiguration for competitive and collaborative industrial automation situations.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio
Securing Real-Time Internet-of-Things
Modern embedded and cyber-physical systems are ubiquitous. A large number of
critical cyber-physical systems have real-time requirements (e.g., avionics,
automobiles, power grids, manufacturing systems, industrial control systems,
etc.). Recent developments and new functionality requires real-time embedded
devices to be connected to the Internet. This gives rise to the real-time
Internet-of-things (RT-IoT) that promises a better user experience through
stronger connectivity and efficient use of next-generation embedded devices.
However RT- IoT are also increasingly becoming targets for cyber-attacks which
is exacerbated by this increased connectivity. This paper gives an introduction
to RT-IoT systems, an outlook of current approaches and possible research
challenges towards secure RT- IoT frameworks
Investigation of Advanced Energy Saving Stand by Strategies for Production Systems
AbstractSwitching machinery into standby during non-productive phases for saving energy is rarely applied in today's production environments. Frequent reasons for this are lack of information on potential benefits and the uncertainty on resulting, potentially negative effects. Thus, in a recent project an approach for investigating both economical and ecological benefits was developed, integrating a facile definition process of possible standby modes and basic production system simulation for investigation of different switching strategies. The results of this estimation are evaluated both economically and ecologically, providing a clear decision base for strategy selection. In this paper, the approach is introduced along with exemplary results
A-2000: Close air support aircraft design team
The US Air Force is currently faced with the problem of providing adequate close air support for ground forces. Air response to troops engaged in combat must be rapid and devastating due to the highly fluid battle lines of the future. The A-2000 is the result of a study to design an aircraft to deliver massive fire power accurately. The low cost A-2000 incorporates: large weapons payload; excellent maneuverability; all weather and terrain following capacity; redundant systems; and high survivability
Self-Adaptation in Industry: A Survey
Computing systems form the backbone of many areas in our society, from
manufacturing to traffic control, healthcare, and financial systems. When
software plays a vital role in the design, construction, and operation, these
systems are referred as software-intensive systems. Self-adaptation equips a
software-intensive system with a feedback loop that either automates tasks that
otherwise need to be performed by human operators or deals with uncertain
conditions. Such feedback loops have found their way to a variety of practical
applications; typical examples are an elastic cloud to adapt computing
resources and automated server management to respond quickly to business needs.
To gain insight into the motivations for applying self-adaptation in practice,
the problems solved using self-adaptation and how these problems are solved,
and the difficulties and risks that industry faces in adopting self-adaptation,
we performed a large-scale survey. We received 184 valid responses from
practitioners spread over 21 countries. Based on the analysis of the survey
data, we provide an empirically grounded overview of state-of-the-practice in
the application of self-adaptation. From that, we derive insights for
researchers to check their current research with industrial needs, and for
practitioners to compare their current practice in applying self-adaptation.
These insights also provide opportunities for the application of
self-adaptation in practice and pave the way for future industry-research
collaborations.Comment: 43 page
