SYNCHRONIZATION AND RESOURCE ALLOCATION IN DOWNLINK OFDM SYSTEMS
The next generation (4G) wireless systems are expected to provide
universal personal and multimedia communications with seamless connection
and very high rate transmissions and without regard to the users’ mobility and
location. OFDM technique is recognized as one of the leading candidates to
provide the wireless signalling for 4G systems. The major challenges in
downlink multiuser OFDM based 4G systems include the wireless channel, the
synchronization and radio resource management. Thus algorithms are required
to achieve accurate timing and frequency offset estimation and the efficient
utilization of radio resources such as subcarrier, bit and power allocation.
The objectives of the thesis are of two fields. Firstly, we presented the
frequency offset estimation algorithms for OFDM systems. Building our work
upon the classic single user OFDM architecture, we proposed two FFT-based
frequency offset estimation algorithms with low computational complexity.
The computer simulation results and comparisons show that the proposed
algorithms provide smaller error variance than previous well-known algorithm.
Secondly, we presented the resource allocation algorithms for OFDM
systems. Building our work upon the downlink multiuser OFDM architecture,
we aimed to minimize the total transmit power by exploiting the system
diversity through the management of subcarrier allocation, adaptive
modulation and power allocation. Particularly, we focused on the dynamic
resource allocation algorithms for multiuser OFDM system and multiuser
MIMO-OFDM system. For the multiuser OFDM system, we proposed a lowiv
complexity channel gain difference based subcarrier allocation algorithm. For
the multiuser MIMO-OFDM system, we proposed a unit-power based
subcarrier allocation algorithm. These proposed algorithms are all combined
with the optimal bit allocation algorithm to achieve the minimal total transmit
power. The numerical results and comparisons with various conventional nonadaptive
and adaptive algorithmic approaches are provided to show that the
proposed resource allocation algorithms improve the system efficiencies and
performance given that the Quality of Service (QoS) for each user is
guaranteed.

Dynamic User Grouping and Joint Resource Allocation with Multi-Cell Cooperation for Uplink Virtual MIMO Systems
This paper proposes a novel joint resource allocation algorithm combining dynamic user grouping, multi-cell cooperation and resource block (RB) allocation for single carrier-frequency division multiple access (SC-FDMA) uplink in multicell virtual MIMO systems. We first develop the dynamic multicell user grouping criteria using minimum mean square error (MMSE) equalization and adaptive modulation (AM) with bit error rate (BER) constraint. Then, we formulate and solve a new throughput maximization problem whose resource allocation includes cell selection, dynamic user grouping and RB pattern assignment. Furthermore, to reduce the computational complexity significantly, especially in the case of large numbers of users and RBs, we present an efficient iterative Hungarian algorithm based on user and resource partitions (IHA_URP) to solve the problem by decomposing the large scale problem into a series of small scale sub-problems, which can obtain close-to-optimal solution with much lower complexity. The simulation results show that our proposed joint resource allocation algorithm with dynamic multicell user grouping scheme achieves better system throughput with BER guarantee than fixed user grouping algorithm and other proposed schemes in the literature
Design guidelines for spatial modulation
A new class of low-complexity, yet energyefficient Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (MIMO) transmission techniques, namely the family of Spatial Modulation (SM) aided MIMOs (SM-MIMO) has emerged. These systems are capable of exploiting the spatial dimensions (i.e. the antenna indices) as an additional dimension invoked for transmitting information, apart from the traditional Amplitude and Phase Modulation (APM). SM is capable of efficiently operating in diverse MIMO configurations in the context of future communication systems. It constitutes a promising transmission candidate for large-scale MIMO design and for the indoor optical wireless communication whilst relying on a single-Radio Frequency (RF) chain. Moreover, SM may also be viewed as an entirely new hybrid modulation scheme, which is still in its infancy. This paper aims for providing a general survey of the SM design framework as well as of its intrinsic limits. In particular, we focus our attention on the associated transceiver design, on spatial constellation optimization, on link adaptation techniques, on distributed/ cooperative protocol design issues, and on their meritorious variants
Robustness maximization of parallel multichannel systems
Bit error rate (BER) minimization and SNR-gap maximization, two robustness
optimization problems, are solved, under average power and bit-rate
constraints, according to the waterfilling policy. Under peak-power constraint
the solutions differ and this paper gives bit-loading solutions of both
robustness optimization problems over independent parallel channels. The study
is based on analytical approach with generalized Lagrangian relaxation tool and
on greedy-type algorithm approach. Tight BER expressions are used for square
and rectangular quadrature amplitude modulations. Integer bit solution of
analytical continuous bit-rates is performed with a new generalized secant
method. The asymptotic convergence of both robustness optimizations is proved
for both analytical and algorithmic approaches. We also prove that, in
conventional margin maximization problem, the equivalence between SNR-gap
maximization and power minimization does not hold with peak-power limitation.
Based on a defined dissimilarity measure, bit-loading solutions are compared
over power line communication channel for multicarrier systems. Simulation
results confirm the asymptotic convergence of both allocation policies. In non
asymptotic regime the allocation policies can be interchanged depending on the
robustness measure and the operating point of the communication system. The low
computational effort of the suboptimal solution based on analytical approach
leads to a good trade-off between performance and complexity.Comment: 27 pages, 8 figures, submitted to IEEE Trans. Inform. Theor
Power Allocation for Adaptive OFDM Index Modulation in Cooperative Networks
In this paper, we propose a power allocation strategy for the adaptive
orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) index modulation (IM) in
cooperative networks. The allocation strategy is based on the
Karush-Kuhn-Tucker (KKT) conditions, and aims at maximizing the average network
capacity according to the instantaneous channel state information (CSI). As the
transmit power at source and relay is constrained separately, we can thus
formulate an optimization problem by allocating power to active subcarriers.
Compared to the conventional uniform power allocation strategy, the proposed
dynamic strategy can lead to a higher average network capacity, especially in
the low signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) region. The analysis is also verified by
numerical results produced by Monte Carlo simulations. By applying the proposed
power allocation strategy, the efficiency of adaptive OFDM IM can be enhanced
in practice, which paves the way for its implementation in the future,
especially for cell-edge communications
A survey on OFDM-based elastic core optical networking
Orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) is a modulation technology that has been widely adopted in many new and emerging broadband wireless and wireline communication systems. Due to its capability to transmit a high-speed data stream using multiple spectral-overlapped lower-speed subcarriers, OFDM technology offers superior advantages of high spectrum efficiency, robustness against inter-carrier and inter-symbol interference, adaptability to server channel conditions, etc. In recent years, there have been intensive studies on optical OFDM (O-OFDM) transmission technologies, and it is considered a promising technology for future ultra-high-speed optical transmission. Based on O-OFDM technology, a novel elastic optical network architecture with immense flexibility and scalability in spectrum allocation and data rate accommodation could be built to support diverse services and the rapid growth of Internet traffic in the future. In this paper, we present a comprehensive survey on OFDM-based elastic optical network technologies, including basic principles of OFDM, O-OFDM technologies, the architectures of OFDM-based elastic core optical networks, and related key enabling technologies. The main advantages and issues of OFDM-based elastic core optical networks that are under research are also discussed
Discrete rate maximisation power allocation with enhanced BER
This study aims to maximise the rate over a multiple-in multiple-out (MIMO) link using incremental power and bit allocation. Two different schemes, greedy power allocation (GPA) and greedy bit allocation (GBA), are addressed and compared with the standard uniform power allocation (UPA). The design is constrained by the target bit error ratio (BER), the total power budget and fixed discrete modulation orders. The authors demonstrate through simulations that GPA outperforms GBA in terms of throughput and power conservation, whereas GBA is advantageous when a lower BER is beneficial. Once the design constraints are satisfied, remaining power is utilised in two possible ways, leading to improved performance of GPA and UPA algorithms. This redistribution is analysed for fairness in BER performance across all active subchannels using a bisection method
