Implementation of Video Compression Standards in Digital Television
In this paper, a video compression standard used in digital television systems is discussed. Basic concepts of video compression and principles of lossy and lossless compression are given. Techniques of video compression (intraframe and interframe compression), the type of frames and principles of the bit rate compression are discussed. Characteristics of standard-definition television (SDTV), high-definition television (HDTV) and ultra-high-definition television (UHDTV) are given. The principles of the MPEG-2, MPEG-4 and High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC) compression standards are analyzed. Overview of basic standards of video compression and the impact of compression on the quality of TV images and the number of TV channels in the multiplexes of terrestrial and satellite digital TV transmission are shown. On Transmission System Design for Wireless Broadcasting
This thesis considers aspects related to the design and standardisation of transmission systems for wireless broadcasting, comprising terrestrial and mobile reception. The purpose is to identify which factors influence the technical decisions and what issues could be better considered in the design process in order to assess different use cases, service scenarios and end-user quality. Further, the necessity of cross-layer optimisation for efficient data transmission is emphasised and means to take this into consideration are suggested. The work is mainly related terrestrial and mobile digital video broadcasting systems but many of the findings can be generalised also to other transmission systems and design processes.
The work has led to three main conclusions. First, it is discovered that there are no sufficiently accurate error criteria for measuring the subjective perceived audiovisual quality that could be utilised in transmission system design. Means for designing new error criteria for mobile TV (television) services are suggested and similar work related to other services is recommended.
Second, it is suggested that in addition to commercial requirements there should be technical requirements setting the frame work for the design process of a new transmission system. The technical requirements should include the assessed reception conditions, technical quality of service and service functionalities. Reception conditions comprise radio channel models, receiver types and antenna types. Technical quality of service consists of bandwidth, timeliness and reliability. Of these, the thesis focuses on radio channel models and errorcriteria (reliability) as two of the most important design challenges and provides means to optimise transmission parameters based on these.
Third, the thesis argues that the most favourable development for wireless broadcasting would be a single system suitable for all scenarios of wireless broadcasting. It is claimed that there are no major technical obstacles to achieve this and that the recently published second generation digital terrestrial television broadcasting system provides a good basis. A survey of digital television broadcast transmission techniques
This paper is a survey of the transmission techniques used in digital television (TV) standards worldwide. With the increase in the demand for High-Definition (HD) TV, video-on-demand and mobile TV services, there was a real need for more bandwidth-efficient, flawless and crisp video quality, which motivated the migration from analogue to digital broadcasting. In this paper we present a brief history of the development of TV and then we survey the transmission technology used in different digital terrestrial, satellite, cable and mobile TV standards in different parts of the world. First, we present the Digital Video Broadcasting standards developed in Europe for terrestrial (DVB-T/T2), for satellite (DVB-S/S2), for cable (DVB-C) and for hand-held transmission (DVB-H). We then describe the Advanced Television System Committee standards developed in the USA both for terrestrial (ATSC) and for hand-held transmission (ATSC-M/H). We continue by describing the Integrated Services Digital Broadcasting standards developed in Japan for Terrestrial (ISDB-T) and Satellite (ISDB-S) transmission and then present the International System for Digital Television (ISDTV), which was developed in Brazil by adopteding the ISDB-T physical layer architecture. Following the ISDTV, we describe the Digital Terrestrial television Multimedia Broadcast (DTMB) standard developed in China. Design and optimization of QoS-based medium access control protocols for next-generation wireless LANs
This thesis was submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy and awarded by Brunel University.In recent years, there have been tremendous advances in wireless & mobile communications, including wireless radio techniques, networking protocols, and mobile devices. It is expected that different
broadband wireless access technologies, e.g., WiFi (IEEE 802.11) and WiMAX (IEEE 802.16) will coexist in the future. In the meantime, multimedia applications have experienced an explosive growth with increasing user demands. Nowadays, people expect to receive high-speed video, audio, voice and web services even when being mobile. The key question that needs to be answered, then, is how do we ensure that users always have the "best" network performance with the "lowest" costs in such complicated situations? The latest IEEE 802.11n standards attains rates of more than 100 Mbps by introducing innovative enhancements at the PHY and MAC layer, e.g. MIMO and Frame Aggregation, respectively. However, in this thesis we demonstrate that frame aggregation's performance adheres due to the EDCA scheduler's priority mechanism and consequently resulting in the network's poor overall performance. Short waiting times for high priority flows into the aggregation queue resolves to poor channel utilization. A Delayed Channel Access algorithm was designed to intentionally postpone the channel access procedure so that the number of packets in a formed frame can be increased and so will the network's overall performance. However, in some cases, the DCA algorithm has a negative impact on the applications that utilize the TCP protocol, especially the when small TCP window sizes are engaged. So, the TCP process starts to refrain from sending data due to delayed acknowledgements and the overall throughput drops. In this thesis, we address the above issues by firstly demonstrating the potential performance benefits of frame aggregation over the next generation wireless networks. The efficiency and behaviour of frame aggregation within a single queue, are mathematically analysed with the aid of a M=G[a;b]=1=K model. Results show that a trade-off choice has to be taken into account over minimizing the waiting time or maximizing utilization. We also point out that there isn't an optimum batch collection rule which can be assumed as generally valid but individual cases have to be considered separately. Secondly, we demonstrate through extensive simulations that by introducing a method, the DCA algorithm, which dynamically determines and adapts batch collections based upon the traffic's characteristics, QoS requirements
and server's maximum capacity, also improves e ciency. Thirdly, it is important to understand the behaviour of the TCP
ows over the WLAN and the influence that DCA has over the degrading performance of the TCP protocol. We investigate the cause of the problem and provide the foundations of designing and implementing possible solutions. Fourthly, we introduce two innovative proposals, one amendment and one extension to the original DCA algorithm, called Adaptive DCA and Selective DCA, respectively. Both solutions have been implemented in OPNET and extensive simulation runs over a wide set of scenarios show their effectiveness over the network's overall performance, each in its own way.This study was supported by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC)
Audience Image Preferences of 1080i and 720p High Definition Video Formats: An Experiment
The two main kinds of high definition television video formats broadcast in the United States are 1080i and 720p. Both formats are claimed to have advantages and disadvantages relative to the other format. However, there has been little academic research to determine viewer preferences of these formats, and whether the stated claims about each format\u27s strengths and weaknesses are valid. This thesis addresses this lack of research by employing an experiment to determine viewer perceptions and preferences of these two high definition formats.
The two major findings from this study pertain to viewer preferences of 1080i/720p with regard to motion, and which format is preferred at night. Statistical analysis of this study\u27s results contradict the often accepted notion 720p is the better format to record and display video involving motion. This experiment\u27s results showed viewers have a significant preference for 1080i when viewing video involving high in-frame movement. It was also determined viewers prefer the 720p video format to a significant level when viewing video recorded at night. Other trends such as 720p being the overall preferred high definition television format were found, but not to a statistically significant level

Intelligent image cropping and scaling
This thesis was submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy and awarded by Brunel University, 2011.Nowadays, there exist a huge number of end devices with different screen properties for
watching television content, which is either broadcasted or transmitted over the internet.
To allow best viewing conditions on each of these devices, different image formats have
to be provided by the broadcaster. Producing content for every single format is,
however, not applicable by the broadcaster as it is much too laborious and costly.
The most obvious solution for providing multiple image formats is to produce one high resolution format and prepare formats of lower resolution from this. One possibility to do this is to simply scale video images to the resolution of the target image format. Two significant drawbacks are the loss of image details through ownscaling and possibly unused image areas due to letter- or pillarboxes. A preferable solution is to find the contextual most important region in the high-resolution format at first and crop this area with an aspect ratio of the target image format afterwards. On the other hand, defining
the contextual most important region manually is very time consuming. Trying to apply that to live productions would be nearly impossible. Therefore, some approaches exist that automatically define cropping areas. To do so, they extract visual features, like moving reas in a video, and define regions of interest
(ROIs) based on those. ROIs are finally used to define an enclosing cropping area. The
extraction of features is done without any knowledge about the type of content. Hence,
these approaches are not able to distinguish between features that might be important in
a given context and those that are not.
The work presented within this thesis tackles the problem of extracting visual features based on prior knowledge about the content. Such knowledge is fed into the system in form of metadata that is available from TV production environments. Based on the
extracted features, ROIs are then defined and filtered dependent on the analysed
content. As proof-of-concept, this application finally adapts SDTV (Standard Definition Television) sports productions automatically to image formats with lower resolution through intelligent cropping and scaling. If no content information is available, the system can still be applied on any type of content through a default mode. The presented approach is based on the principle of a plug-in system. Each plug-in
represents a method for analysing video content information, either on a low level by
extracting image features or on a higher level by processing extracted ROIs. The
combination of plug-ins is determined by the incoming descriptive production metadata
and hence can be adapted to each type of sport individually. The application has been comprehensively evaluated by comparing the results of the system against alternative cropping methods. This evaluation utilised videos which were manually cropped by a professional video editor, statically cropped videos and simply scaled, non-cropped videos. In addition to and apart from purely subjective evaluations,
the gaze positions of subjects watching sports videos have been measured and compared
to the regions of interest positions extracted by the system
Evaluation of unidirectional background push content download services for the delivery of television programs
Este trabajo de tesis presenta los servicios de descarga de contenido en modo push como un
mecanismo eficiente para el envío de contenido de televisión pre-producido sobre redes de
difusión. Hoy en día, los operadores de red dedican una cantidad considerable de recursos
de red a la entrega en vivo de contenido televisivo, tanto sobre redes de difusión como
sobre conexiones unidireccionales. Esta oferta de servicios responde únicamente a
requisitos comerciales: disponer de los contenidos televisivos en cualquier momento y
lugar. Sin embargo, desde un punto de vista estrictamente académico, el envío en vivo es
únicamente un requerimiento para el contenido en vivo, no para contenidos que ya han sido
producidos con anterioridad a su emisión. Más aún, la difusión es solo eficiente cuando el
contenido es suficientemente popular.
Los servicios bajo estudio en esta tesis utilizan capacidad residual en redes de difusión para
enviar contenido pre-producido para que se almacene en los equipos de usuario. La
propuesta se justifica únicamente por su eficiencia. Por un lado, genera valor de recursos de
red que no se aprovecharían de otra manera. Por otro lado, realiza la entrega de contenidos
pre-producidos y populares de la manera más eficiente: sobre servicios de descarga de
contenidos en difusión.
Los resultados incluyen modelos para la popularidad y la duración de contenidos, valiosos
para cualquier trabajo de investigación basados en la entrega de contenidos televisivos.
Además, la tesis evalúa la capacidad residual disponible en redes de difusión, por medio de
estudios empíricos. Después, estos resultados son utilizados en simulaciones que evalúan
las prestaciones de los servicios propuestos en escenarios diferentes y para aplicaciones
diferentes. La evaluación demuestra que este tipo de servicios son un recurso muy útil para
la entrega de contenido televisivo.This thesis dissertation presents background push Content Download Services as an
efficient mechanism to deliver pre-produced television content through existing broadcast
networks. Nowadays, network operators dedicate a considerable amount of network
resources to live streaming live, through both broadcast and unicast connections. This
service offering responds solely to commercial requirements: Content must be available
anytime and anywhere. However, from a strictly academic point of view, live streaming is
only a requirement for live content and not for pre-produced content. Moreover,
broadcasting is only efficient when the content is sufficiently popular.
The services under study in this thesis use residual capacity in broadcast networks to push
popular, pre-produced content to storage capacity in customer premises equipment. The
proposal responds only to efficiency requirements. On one hand, it creates value from
network resources otherwise unused. On the other hand, it delivers popular pre-produced
content in the most efficient way: through broadcast download services.
The results include models for the popularity and the duration of television content,
valuable for any research work dealing with file-based delivery of television content. Later,
the thesis evaluates the residual capacity available in broadcast networks through empirical
studies. These results are used in simulations to evaluate the performance of background
push content download services in different scenarios and for different applications. The
evaluation proves that this kind of services can become a great asset for the delivery of
