    A robust timing and frequency synchronization for OFDM systems

    Abstract—A robust symbol-timing and carrier-frequency synchronization scheme applicable to orthogonal frequency-division-multiplexing systems is presented. The proposed method is based on a training symbol specifically designed to have a steep rolloff timing metric. The proposed timing metric also provides a robust sync detection capability. Both time domain training and frequency domain (FD) training are investigated. For FD training, maintaining a low peak-to-average power ratio of the training symbol was taken into consideration. The channel estimation scheme based on the designed training symbol was also incorporated in the system in order to give both fine-timing and frequency-offset estimates. For fine frequency estimation, two approaches are presented. The first one is based on the suppression of the interference introduced in the frequency estimation process by the training symbol pattern in the context of multipath dispersive channels. The second one is based on the maximum likelihood principle and does not suffer from any interference. A new performance measure is introduced for timing estimation, which is based on the plot of signal to timing-error-induced average interference power ratio against the timing estimate shift. A simple approach for finding the optimal setting of the timing estimator is presented. Finally, the sync detection, timing estimation, frequency estimation, and bit-error-rate performance of the proposed method are presented in a multipath Rayleigh fading channel.     dissertationThe demand for high speed communication has been increasing in the past two decades. Multicarrier communication technology has been suggested to address this demand. Orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) is the most widely used multicarrier technique. However, OFDM has a number of disadvantages in time-varying channels, multiple access, and cognitive radios. On the other hand, filterbank multicarrier (FBMC) communication has been suggested as an alternative to OFDM that can overcome the disadvantages of OFDM. In this dissertation, we investigate the application of filtered multitone (FMT), a subset of FBMC modulation methods, to slow fading and fast fading channels. We investigate the FMT transmitter and receiver in continuous and discrete time domains. An efficient implementation of FMT systems is derived and the conditions for perfect reconstruction in an FBMC communication system are presented. We derive equations for FMT in slow fading channels that allow evaluation of FMT when applied to mobile wireless communication systems. We consider using fractionally spaced per tone channel equalizers with different number of taps. The numerical results are presented to investigate the performance of these equalizers. The numerical results show that single-tap equalizers suffice for typical wireless channels. The equalizer design study is advanced by introducing adaptive equalizers which use channel estimation. We derive equations for a minimum mean square error (MMSE) channel estimator and improve the channel estimation by considering the finite duration of channel impulse response. The results of optimum equalizers (when channel is known perfectly) are compared with those of the adaptive equalizers, and it is found that a loss of 1 dB or less incurs. We also introduce a new form of FMT which is specially designed to handle doubly dispersive channels. This method is called FMT-dd (FMT for doubly dispersive channels). The proposed FMT-dd is applied to two common methods of data symbol orientation in the time-frequency space grid; namely, rectangular and hexagonal lattices. The performance of these methods along with OFDM and the conventional FMT are compared and a significant improvement in performance is observed. The FMT-dd design is applied to real-world underwater acoustic (UWA) communication channels. The experimental results from an at-sea experiment (ACOMM10) show that this new design provides a significant gain over OFDM. The feasibility of implementing a MIMO system for multicarrier UWA communication channels is studied through computer simulations. Our study emphasizes the bandwidth efficiency of multicarrier MIMO communications .We show that the value of MIMO to UWA communication is very limited

    Multi-stage Wireless Signal Identification for Blind Interception Receiver Design

    Protection of critical wireless infrastructure from malicious attacks has become increasingly important in recent years, with the widespread deployment of various wireless technologies and dramatic growth in user populations. This brings substantial technical challenges to the interception receiver design to sense and identify various wireless signals using different transmission technologies. The key requirements for the receiver design include estimation of the signal parameters/features and classification of the modulation scheme. With the proper identification results, corresponding signal interception techniques can be developed, which can be further employed to enhance the network behaviour analysis and intrusion detection. In detail, the initial stage of the blind interception receiver design is to identify the signal parameters. In the thesis, two low-complexity approaches are provided to realize the parameter estimation, which are based on iterative cyclostationary analysis and envelope spectrum estimation, respectively. With the estimated signal parameters, automatic modulation classification (AMC) is performed to automatically identify the modulation schemes of the transmitted signals. A novel approach is presented based on Gaussian Mixture Models (GMM) in Chapter 4. The approach is capable of mitigating the negative effect from multipath fading channel. To validate the proposed design, the performance is evaluated under an experimental propagation environment. The results show that the proposed design is capable of adapting blind parameter estimation, realize timing and frequency synchronization and classifying the modulation schemes with improved performances

    EXTRINSIC CHANNEL-LIKE FINGERPRINT EMBEDDING FOR TRANSMITTER AUTHENTICATION IN WIRELESS SYSTEMS

    We present a physical-layer fingerprint-embedding scheme for wireless signals, focusing on multiple input multiple output (MIMO) and orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) transmissions, where the fingerprint signal conveys a low capacity communication suitable for authenticating the transmission and further facilitating secure communications. Our system strives to embed the fingerprint message into the noise subspace of the channel estimates obtained by the receiver, using a number of signal spreading techniques. When side information of channel state is known and leveraged by the transmitter, the performance of the fingerprint embedding can be improved. When channel state information is not known, blind spreading techniques are applied. The fingerprint message is only visible to aware receivers who explicitly preform detection of the signal, but is invisible to receivers employing typical channel equalization. A taxonomy of overlay designs is discussed and these designs are explored through experiment using time-varying channel-state information (CSI) recorded from IEEE802.16e Mobile WiMax base stations. The performance of the fingerprint signal as received by a WiMax subscriber is demonstrated using CSI measurements derived from the downlink signal. Detection performance for the digital fingerprint message in time-varying channel conditions is also presented via simulation

    Aufgrund des zunehmenden Datenverkehrs wird erwartet, dass die optischen Netze zukünftig mit höheren Systemkapazitäten betrieben werden. Dazu wird bspw. die kohärente Übertragung eingesetzt, bei der das Modulationsformat erhöht werden kann, erforder jedoch ein größeres SNR. Um dies zu erreichen, wird die optische Signalleistung erhöht, wodurch die Datenübertragung durch die nichtlinearen Beeinträchtigungen gestört wird. Der Schwerpunkt dieser Arbeit liegt auf der Entwicklung von Modellen des maschinellen Lernens, die auf diese nichtlineare Signalverschlechterung reagieren. Es wird die Support-Vector-Machine (SVM) implementiert und als klassifizierende Entscheidungsmaschine verwendet. Die Ergebnisse zeigen, dass die SVM eine verbesserte Kompensation sowohl der nichtlinearen Fasereffekte als auch der Verzerrungen der optischen Systemkomponenten ermöglicht. Das Prinzip von EONs bietet eine Technologie zur effizienten Nutzung der verfügbaren Ressourcen, die von der optischen Faser bereitgestellt werden. Ein Schlüsselelement der Technologie ist der bandbreitenvariable Transponder, der bspw. die Anpassung des Modulationsformats oder des Codierungsschemas an die aktuellen Verbindungsbedingungen ermöglicht. Um eine optimale Ressourcenauslastung zu gewährleisten wird der Einsatz von Algorithmen des Reinforcement Learnings untersucht. Die Ergebnisse zeigen, dass der RL-Algorithmus in der Lage ist, sich an unbekannte Link-Bedingungen anzupassen, während vergleichbare heuristische Ansätze wie der genetische Algorithmus für jedes Szenario neu trainiert werden müssen

    Non-Orthogonal Signal and System Design for Wireless Communications

    The thesis presents research in non-orthogonal multi-carrier signals, in which: (i) a new signal format termed truncated orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (TOFDM) is proposed to improve data rates in wireless communication systems, such as those used in mobile/cellular systems and wireless local area networks (LANs), and (ii) a new design and experimental implementation of a real-time spectrally efficient frequency division multiplexing (SEFDM) system are reported. This research proposes a modified version of the orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) format, obtained by truncating OFDM symbols in the time-domain. In TOFDM, subcarriers are no longer orthogonally packed in the frequency-domain as time samples are only partially transmitted, leading to improved spectral efficiency. In this work, (i) analytical expressions are derived for the newly proposed TOFDM signal, followed by (ii) interference analysis, (iii) systems design for uncoded and coded schemes, (iv) experimental implementation and (v) performance evaluation of the new proposed signal and system, with comparisons to conventional OFDM systems. Results indicate that signals can be recovered with truncated symbol transmission. Based on the TOFDM principle, a new receiving technique, termed partial symbol recovery (PSR), is designed and implemented in software de ned radio (SDR), that allows efficient operation of two users for overlapping data, in wireless communication systems operating with collisions. The PSR technique is based on recovery of collision-free partial OFDM symbols, followed by the reconstruction of complete symbols to recover progressively the frames of two users suffering collisions. The system is evaluated in a testbed of 12-nodes using SDR platforms. The thesis also proposes channel estimation and equalization technique for non-orthogonal signals in 5G scenarios, using an orthogonal demodulator and zero padding. Finally, the implementation of complete SEFDM systems in real-time is investigated and described in detail

    Timing and Frequency Synchronization in Practical OFDM Systems

    Orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) has been adopted by many broadband wireless communication systems for the simplicity of the receiver technique to support high data rates and user mobility. However, studies also show that the advantage of OFDM over the single-carrier modulation schemes could be substantially compromised by timing or frequency estimation errors at the receiver. In this thesis we investigate the synchronization problem for practical OFDM systems using a system model generalized from the IEEE 802.11 and IEEE 802.16 standards. For preamble based synchronization schemes, which are most common in the downlink of wireless communication systems, we propose a novel timing acquisition algorithm which minimizes false alarm probability and indirectly improves correct detection probability. We then introduce a universal fractional carrier frequency offset (CFO) estimator that outperforms conventional methods at low signal to noise ratio with lower complexity. More accurate timing and frequency estimates can be obtained by our proposed frequency-domain algorithms incorporating channel knowledge. We derive four joint frequency, timing, and channel estimators with different approximations, and then propose a hybrid integer CFO estimation scheme to provide flexible performance and complexity tradeoffs. When the exact channel delay profile is unknown at the receiver, we present a successive timing estimation algorithm to solve the timing ambiguity. Both analytical and simulation results are presented to confirm the performance of the proposed methods in various realistic channel conditions. ..

    Looking into the ‘black box’: an exploration of the dynamics behind the success and failure of job training for unemployed youth

    In order to tackle the problem of youth unemployment, many governments spend a considerable budget on active labour market policies (ALMPs} for young people. However, the evidence on the effectiveness of those interventions is mixed and paints a rather pessimistic picture. So far, the reasons and mechanisms underlying the effectiveness of ALMPs for youths are hardly understood in the evaluation literature. Despite the importance of analysing the role of non-cognitive skills, attitudes and beliefs for the development of vocational trajectories is increasingly recognised, in particular within the field of labour economics, very few studies assess the role of those psychological factors in the context of ALMP evaluation. This mixed-methods research addresses this gap. Two qualitative studies (n=44 in both cases} and one longitudinal quantitative study (n=434) were carried out - leading to two qualitative and two quantitative empirical chapters. The aim was to understand the determinants of training dropout, job search behaviour and labour market outcomes for unemployed young people in a German urban context, as well as their processes of personal change during training participation, and institutional selections mechanisms affecting ALMP effectiveness for youth. The findings showed that young people drop out of job training if they do not experience autonomy, relatedness and competence in the training context. Further findings stress the association of individual characteristics such as fear of failure and grit with training participation, job search behaviour and job outcomes. Grit emerged as a potentially important resilience resource to persist through fear and mental health issues. The findings furthermore suggest important gender-related differences, such as a self-sabotaging effect of fear of failure (only} for males. A seven-phase theory of change for vocational activation is proposed, including a range of drivers that can trigger young people's change process from an initial state of inactivity to ultimate job success. Finally, institutional arrangements that act counterproductively to an effective ALMP implementation were identified and discussed in their implications for further research, policy and practice
