    Advances in Theoretical and Computational Energy Optimization Processes

This is necessary in order to mitigate the ecological footprint of man on the Earth, which cannot be considered as a resource with infinite capacities. To do this, every single process must be analyzed and modified, with the aim of decarbonising each production sector.     The integration of pumped hydro storage systems into PV microgrids in rural areas

    Photovoltaic (PV) systems are popular in rural areas because they provide low cost and clean electricity for homes and irrigation systems. The primary challenge of PV systems is their intermittent nature. The typical solution is storing energy in batteries; however, they are expensive and possess a short lifespan. This research proposes a new type of pumped hydro storage (PHS) which can be implemented as an alternative to batteries. The components of the system are modelled to consider losses of the system accurately. The mathematic model developed in this project assists the management system to make more efficient decisions. The proposed storage is integrated into a farmhouse that has a PV pumping system where economic aspects of implementing the proposed storage is investigated. The integration of the proposed PHS into a microgrid needs a management system to make this system efficient and 3 cost-effective. This research proposes a multi-stage management system to schedule and control the microgrid components for optimal integration of the PHS. The designed management system is able to manage the pump, turbine, and irrigation time on real-time taking into account both present and future conditions of the microgrid. This study investigates the technical aspects of the proposed system. The PHS and the management system are tested experimentally in a setup installed at smart energy laboratory at Edith Cowan university. Data used in this project are real data collected in the laboratory in order to have a realistic analysis. Economic analysis is done in different sizes with different conditions. Results indicate that the proposed system has a short payback period and a large lifetime benefit, featuring as a cost-effective and sustainable energy storage system for use in rural areas.     Establishment of a novel predictive reliability assessment strategy for ship machinery

    There is no doubt that recent years, maritime industry is moving forward to novel and sophisticated inspection and maintenance practices. Nowadays maintenance is encountered as an operational method, which can be employed both as a profit generating process and a cost reduction budget centre through an enhanced Operation and Maintenance (O&M) strategy. In the first place, a flexible framework to be applicable on complex system level of machinery can be introduced towards ship maintenance scheduling of systems, subsystems and components.;This holistic inspection and maintenance notion should be implemented by integrating different strategies, methodologies, technologies and tools, suitably selected by fulfilling the requirements of the selected ship systems. In this thesis, an innovative maintenance strategy for ship machinery is proposed, namely the Probabilistic Machinery Reliability Assessment (PMRA) strategy focusing towards the reliability and safety enhancement of main systems, subsystems and maintainable units and components.;In this respect, the combination of a data mining method (k-means), the manufacturer safety aspects, the dynamic state modelling (Markov Chains), the probabilistic predictive reliability assessment (Bayesian Belief Networks) and the qualitative decision making (Failure Modes and Effects Analysis) is employed encompassing the benefits of qualitative and quantitative reliability assessment. PMRA has been clearly demonstrated in two case studies applied on offshore platform oil and gas and selected ship machinery.;The results are used to identify the most unreliability systems, subsystems and components, while advising suitable practical inspection and maintenance activities.     Machine learning solutions for maintenance of power plants

    The primary goal of this work is to present analysis of current market for predictive maintenance software solutions applicable to a generic coal/gas-fired thermal power plant, as well as to present a brief discussion on the related developments of the near future. This type of solutions is in essence an advanced condition monitoring technique, that is used to continuously monitor entire plants and detect sensor reading deviations via correlative calculations. This approach allows for malfunction forecasting well in advance to a malfunction itself and any possible unforeseen consequences. Predictive maintenance software solutions employ primitive artificial intelligence in the form of machine learning (ML) algorithms to provide early detection of signal deviation. Before analyzing existing ML based solutions, structure and theory behind the processes of coal/gas driven power plants is going to be discussed to emphasize the necessity of predictive maintenance for optimal and reliable operation. Subjects to be discussed are: basic theory (thermodynamics and electrodynamics), primary machinery types, automation systems and data transmission, typical faults and condition monitoring techniques that are also often used in tandem with ML. Additionally, the basic theory on the main machine learning techniques related to malfunction prediction is going to be briefly presented

    Prognostic Approaches Using Transient Monitoring Methods

    The utilization of steady state monitoring techniques has become an established means of providing diagnostic and prognostic information regarding both systems and equipment. However, steady state data is not the only, or in some cases, even the best source of information regarding the health and state of a system. Transient data has largely been overlooked as a source of system information due to the additional complexity in analyzing these types of signals. The development for algorithms and techniques to quickly, and intuitively develop generic quantification of deviations a transient signal towards the goal of prognostic predictions has until now, largely been overlooked. By quantifying and trending these shifts, an accurate measure of system heath can be established and utilized by prognostic algorithms. In fact, for some systems the elevated stress levels during transients can provide better, more clear indications of system health than those derived from steady state monitoring. This research is based on the hypothesis that equipment health signals for some failure modes are stronger during transient conditions than during steady-state because transient conditions (e.g. start-up) place greater stress on the equipment for these failure modes. From this it follows that these signals related to the system or equipment health would display more prominent indications of abnormality if one were to know the proper means to identify them. This project seeks to develop methods and conceptual models to monitor transient signals for equipment health. The purpose of this research is to assess if monitoring of transient signals could provide alternate or better indicators of incipient equipment failure prior to steady state signals. The project is focused on identifying methods, both traditional and novel, suitable to implement and test transient model monitoring in both an useful and intuitive way. By means of these techniques, it is shown that the addition information gathered during transient portions of life can be used to either to augment existing steady-state information, or in cases where such information is unavailable, be used as a primary means of developing prognostic models
