    High-speed fluorescent thermal imaging of quench propagation in high temperature superconductor tapes

    Fluorescent Microthermographic Imaging, a method using rare-earth fluorescent coatings with temperature-dependent light emission, was used for quench investigation in high temperature superconductors (HTS). A fluorophore was embedded in a polymer matrix and used as a coating on top of an HTS tape, while being excited with UV light and recorded with a high-speed camera. Simultaneously, the tape was pulsed with high amplitude, short duration DC current, and brought to quench with the help of a localized defect. The joule heating during a quench influences the fluorescent light intensity emitted from the coating, and by recording the local variations in this intensity over time, the heating of the tape can be visualized and the developed temperatures can be calculated. In this paper, the fluorophore Europium tris[3-(trifluoromethylhydroxymethylene)- (+)-camphorate] (EuTFC) provided sufficient temperature sensitivity and a usable temperature range from 77 K to 260 K. With the help of high-speed recordings, the normal zone development was imaged in a 20 \mu m copper stabilized HTS tape held in a liquid nitrogen bath, and using a calibration curve, the temperatures reached during the quench have been calculated

    Singular spectrum analysis filtering and Fourier inversion: an efficient and fast way to improve resolution and quality of current density maps with low-cost Hall scanning systems

    We provide a Biot–Savart inversion scheme that, for any two-dimensional, or bulk with planar crystallization, high-temperature superconducting (HTS) sample, determines current density maps with a higher resolution and accuracy than previous procedures and at a fraction of its computational cost. The starting point of our scheme is a Hall scanning microscopy map of the out-of-plane component of the magnetic field generated by the current. Such maps are noisy in scans of real samples with commercial-grade equipment, and their error is the limiting factor in any Biot–Savart inversion scheme. The main innovation of our proposed scheme is a singular spectrum analysis (SSA) filtering of the Hall probe maps, which cancels measurement errors such as noise or drifts without introducing any artifacts in the field map. The SSA filtering of the Hall probe data is so successful in this task that the resulting magnetic field map does not require an overdetermined QR inversion, allowing Fourier inversion of the Biot–Savart problem. Our implementation of SSA filtering of the Hall scan measurements, followed by Biot–Savart inversion using the fast Fourier transform (FFT), is applied to both simulations and real samples of HTS tape stacks. The algorithm works in cases where ill conditioning ruled out the application of Fourier inversion, and achieves a finer resolution for a fraction of the cost of the QR inversion used to date.     Three methods were tested for collection of the training sets needed to establish the spectral signatures of the land uses/land covers sought due to the difficulties of retrospective collection of representative ground control data. Computer preprocessing techniques applied to the digital images to improve the final classification results were geometric corrections, spectral band or image ratioing and statistical cleaning of the representative training sets. A minimal level of statistical verification was made based upon the comparisons between the airphoto estimates and the classification results. The verifications provided a further support to the selection of MSS band 5 and 7. It also indicated that the maximum likelihood ratioing technique can achieve more agreeable classification results with the airphoto estimates than the stepwise discriminant analysis
