    Overview and classification of coordination contracts within forward and reverse supply chains

    Among coordination mechanisms, contracts are valuable tools used in both theory and practice to coordinate various supply chains. The focus of this paper is to present an overview of contracts and a classification of coordination contracts and contracting literature in the form of classification schemes. The two criteria used for contract classification, as resulted from contracting literature, are transfer payment contractual incentives and inventory risk sharing.     Asymmetric information between food manufacturers and retailers constrains the efforts of analysts studying the retail food chain. The problem may be especially pronounced during new product introductions. Manufacturers may have demand information about new products but have incentives to not credibly relay that information. Retailers often lack reliable demand information about new products. Understanding the roots of non-credible information flows within the manufacturer/retailer relationship is important to behavioral modeling in the food chain. This paper provides an analytic derivation to explain sufficient conditions for non-credible information flows leading to asymmetric information and adverse selection problems.     A Market Experiment on Trade Promotion Budget and Allocation

    We design a market experiment to examine how firm size and ability to choose trade promotion types influence trade promotion budget, its allocation and channel profits. Our experimental results show that larger manufacturers offer smaller trade promotion budgets. Manufacturers with ability to influence the allocation decision favor scan-backs while retailers favor off-invoices. Trade promotion decisions affect profit sharing within the channel but not total channel profit. We validate these findings with an econometric analysis of survey data from supermarket executives.     Bidding and Performance in Repo Auctions: Evidence from ECB Open Market Operations

    Repo auctions are used to inject central bank funds against collateral into the banking sector. The ECB uses standard discriminatory auctions and hundreds of banks participate. The amount auctioned over the monthly reserve maintenance period is in principle exactly what banks collectively need to fulfil reserve requirements. We study bidder-level data and find: (i) Bidder behavior is different from what is documented for treasury auctions. Private information and the winner’s curse seem to be relatively unimportant. (ii) Underpricing is positively related to the difference between the interbank rate and the auction minimum bid rate, with the latter appearing to be a binding constraint. (iii) Bidders are more aggressive when the imbalance of awards in the previous auction is larger. (iv) Large bidders do better than small bidders.     Online Resource Inference in Network Utility Maximization Problems

    The amount of transmitted data in computer networks is expected to grow considerably in the future, putting more and more pressure on the network infrastructures. In order to guarantee a good service, it then becomes fundamental to use the network resources efficiently. Network Utility Maximization (NUM) provides a framework to optimize the rate allocation when network resources are limited. Unfortunately, in the scenario where the amount of available resources is not known a priori, classical NUM solving methods do not offer a viable solution. To overcome this limitation we design an overlay rate allocation scheme that attempts to infer the actual amount of available network resources while coordinating the users rate allocation. Due to the general and complex model assumed for the congestion measurements, a passive learning of the available resources would not lead to satisfying performance. The coordination scheme must then perform active learning in order to speed up the resources estimation and quickly increase the system performance. By adopting an optimal learning formulation we are able to balance the tradeoff between an accurate estimation, and an effective resources exploitation in order to maximize the long term quality of the service delivered to the users

    Applications of Negotiation Theory to Water Issues

    The purpose of the paper is to review the applications of non-cooperative bargaining theory to water related issues – which fall in the category of formal models of negotiation. The ultimate aim is that to, on the one hand, identify the conditions under which agreements are likely to emerge, and their characteristics; and, on the other hand, to support policy makers in devising the “rules of the game” that could help obtain a desired result. Despite the fact that allocation of natural resources, especially of trans-boundary nature, has all the characteristics of a negotiation problem, there are not many applications of formal negotiation theory to the issue. Therefore, this paper first discusses the non-cooperative bargaining models applied to water allocation problems found in the literature. Particular attention will be given to those directly modelling the process of negotiation, although some attempts at finding strategies to maintain the efficient allocation solution will also be illustrated. In addition, this paper will focus on Negotiation Support Systems (NSS), developed to support the process of negotiation. This field of research is still relatively new, however, and NSS have not yet found much use in real life negotiation.     This paper provides a formal survey of price and quantity instruments for mitigating global warming. We explicitly consider policies’ impact on the incentives of resource owners who maximize their profits intertemporally. We focus on the informational and commitment requirements of the regulator. Furthermore, we study the interplay between (private) resource extraction rent and (public) climate rent and ask how property and management of the climate rent can be assigned between regulator and resource sector.
