Optimal Precoders for Tracking the AoD and AoA of a mm-Wave Path

In millimeter-wave channels, most of the received energy is carried by a few paths. Traditional precoders sweep the angle-of-departure (AoD) and angle-of-arrival (AoA) space with directional precoders to identify directions with largest power. Such precoders are heuristic and lead to sub-optimal AoD/AoA estimation. We derive optimal precoders, minimizing the Cram\'{e}r-Rao bound (CRB) of the AoD/AoA, assuming a fully digital architecture at the transmitter and spatial filtering of a single path. The precoders are found by solving a suitable convex optimization problem. We demonstrate that the accuracy can be improved by at least a factor of two over traditional precoders, and show that there is an optimal number of distinct precoders beyond which the CRB does not improve.Comment: Resubmission to IEEE Trans. on Signal Processing. 12 pages and 9 figure

Optimizing the mmWave Channel Estimation Duration by Rate Prediction

In millimeter-wave (mmWave) wireless communications, the duration of the channel estimation plays a major role to establish the links before data transmission. However, fixed or long channel estimation can substantially hinder the achievable transmit data rates. In this letter, we propose a new scheme that optimizes the channel estimation duration to establish the link between the base station (BS) and a mobile station (MS) in mmWave communications. Before pilot transmissions, the BS predicts the downlink effective rate that would be achieved after channel estimation with the pilot precoder and compares this predicted rate with the current rate, based on the current channel estimates. The proposed scheme optimizes the mmWave channel estimation duration by ending pilot transmissions when the predicted rate is lower than the current rate

Beam Tracking for Dynamic mmWave Channels: A New Training Beam Sequence Design Approach

In this paper, we develop an efficient training beam sequence design approach for millimeter wave MISO tracking systems. We impose a discrete state Markov process assumption on the evolution of the angle of departure and introduce the maximum a posteriori criterion to track it in each beam training period. Since it is infeasible to derive an explicit expression for the resultant tracking error probability, we turn to its upper bound, which possesses a closed-form expression and is therefore leveraged as the objective function to optimize the training beam sequence. Considering the complicated objective function and the unit modulus constraints imposed by analog phase shifters, we resort to the particle swarm algorithm to solve the formulated optimization problem. Numerical results validate the superiority of the proposed training beam sequence design approach
