Resource Allocation for Secure Gaussian Parallel Relay Channels with Finite-Length Coding and Discrete Constellations
We investigate the transmission of a secret message from Alice to Bob in the
presence of an eavesdropper (Eve) and many of decode-and-forward relay nodes.
Each link comprises a set of parallel channels, modeling for example an
orthogonal frequency division multiplexing transmission. We consider the impact
of discrete constellations and finite-length coding, defining an achievable
secrecy rate under a constraint on the equivocation rate at Eve. Then we
propose a power and channel allocation algorithm that maximizes the achievable
secrecy rate by resorting to two coupled Gale-Shapley algorithms for stable
matching problem. We consider the scenarios of both full and partial channel
state information at Alice. In the latter case, we only guarantee an outage
secrecy rate, i.e., the rate of a message that remains secret with a given
probability. Numerical results are provided for Rayleigh fading channels in
terms of average outage secrecy rate, showing that practical schemes achieve a
performance quite close to that of ideal ones
Enhancing Physical Layer Security in AF Relay Assisted Multi-Carrier Wireless Transmission
In this paper, we study the physical layer security (PLS) problem in the dual
hop orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) based wireless
communication system. First, we consider a single user single relay system and
study a joint power optimization problem at the source and relay subject to
individual power constraint at the two nodes. The aim is to maximize the end to
end secrecy rate with optimal power allocation over different sub-carriers.
Later, we consider a more general multi-user multi-relay scenario. Under high
SNR approximation for end to end secrecy rate, an optimization problem is
formulated to jointly optimize power allocation at the BS, the relay selection,
sub-carrier assignment to users and the power loading at each of the relaying
node. The target is to maximize the overall security of the system subject to
independent power budget limits at each transmitting node and the OFDMA based
exclusive sub-carrier allocation constraints. A joint optimization solution is
obtained through duality theory. Dual decomposition allows to exploit convex
optimization techniques to find the power loading at the source and relay
nodes. Further, an optimization for power loading at relaying nodes along with
relay selection and sub carrier assignment for the fixed power allocation at
the BS is also studied. Lastly, a sub-optimal scheme that explores joint power
allocation at all transmitting nodes for the fixed subcarrier allocation and
relay assignment is investigated. Finally, simulation results are presented to
validate the performance of the proposed schemes.Comment: 10 pages, 7 figures, accepted in Transactions on Emerging

Secrecy Rates and Optimal Power Allocation for Full-Duplex Decode-and-Forward Relay Wire-Tap Channels
This paper investigates the secrecy rates and optimal power allocation schemes for a decode-and-forward wiretap relay channel where the transmission from a source to a destination is aided by a relay operating in a full-duplex (FD) mode under practical residual self-interference. By first considering static channels, we address the non-convex optimal power allocation problems between the source and relay nodes under individual and joint power constraints to establish closed-form solutions. An asymptotic analysis is then given to provide important insights on the derived power allocation solutions. Specifically, by using the method of dominant balance, it is demonstrated that full power at the relay is only optimal when the power at relay is sufficiently smaller when compared with that of the source. When the power at the relay is larger than the power at the source, the power consumed at the relay saturates to a constant for an effective control of self-interference. The analysis is also helpful to demonstrate that the secrecy capacity of the FD system is twice as much as that of the half-duplex system. The extension to fast fading channels with channel state information being available at the receivers but not the transmitters is also studied. To this end, we first establish a closed-form expression of the ergodic secrecy rate using simple exponential integrals for a given power allocation scheme. The results also show that with optimal power allocation schemes, FD can significantly improve the secrecy rate in fast fading environments
Power Efficient and Secure Full-Duplex Wireless Communication Systems
In this paper, we study resource allocation for a full-duplex (FD) radio base
station serving multiple half-duplex (HD) downlink and uplink users
simultaneously. The considered resource allocation algorithm design is
formulated as a non-convex optimization problem taking into account minimum
required receive signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratios (SINRs) for downlink
and uplink communication and maximum tolerable SINRs at potential
eavesdroppers. The proposed optimization framework enables secure downlink and
uplink communication via artificial noise generation in the downlink for
interfering the potential eavesdroppers. We minimize the weighted sum of the
total downlink and uplink transmit power by jointly optimizing the downlink
beamformer, the artificial noise covariance matrix, and the uplink transmit
power. We adopt a semidefinite programming (SDP) relaxation approach to obtain
a tractable solution for the considered problem. The tightness of the SDP
relaxation is revealed by examining a sufficient condition for the global
optimality of the solution. Simulation results demonstrate the excellent
performance achieved by the proposed scheme and the significant transmit power
savings enabled optimization of the artificial noise covariance matrix.Comment: 6 pages, invited paper, IEEE Conference on Communications and Network

Subcarrier Pairing as Channel Gain Tailoring: Joint Resource Allocation for Relay-Assisted Secure OFDMA with Untrusted Users
Joint resource allocation involving optimization of subcarrier allocation,
subcarrier pairing (SCP), and power allocation in a cooperative secure
orthogonal frequency division multiple access (OFDMA) communication system with
untrusted users is considered. Both amplify and forward (AF), and decode and
forward (DF) modes of operations are considered with individual power budget
constraints for source and relay. After finding optimal subcarrier allocation
for an AF relayed system, we prove the joint power allocation as a generalized
convex problem, and solve it optimally. Compared to the conventional channel
gain matching view, the optimal SCP is emphasized as a novel concept of channel
gain tailoring. We prove that the optimal SCP pairs subcarriers such that the
variance among the effective channel gains is minimized. For a DF relayed
system, we show that depending on the power budgets of source and relay, SCP
can either be in a subordinate role where it improves the energy efficiency, or
in a main role where it improves the spectral efficiency of the system. In an
AF relayed system we confirm that SCP plays a crucial role, and improves the
spectral efficiency of the system. The channel gain tailoring property of SCP,
various roles of SCP in improving the spectral and the energy efficiency of a
cooperative communication system are validated with the help of simulation

Adaptive OFDM Index Modulation for Two-Hop Relay-Assisted Networks
In this paper, we propose an adaptive orthogonal frequency-division
multiplexing (OFDM) index modulation (IM) scheme for two-hop relay networks. In
contrast to the traditional OFDM IM scheme with a deterministic and fixed
mapping scheme, in this proposed adaptive OFDM IM scheme, the mapping schemes
between a bit stream and indices of active subcarriers for the first and second
hops are adaptively selected by a certain criterion. As a result, the active
subcarriers for the same bit stream in the first and second hops can be varied
in order to combat slow frequency-selective fading. In this way, the system
reliability can be enhanced. Additionally, considering the fact that a relay
device is normally a simple node, which may not always be able to perform
mapping scheme selection due to limited processing capability, we also propose
an alternative adaptive methodology in which the mapping scheme selection is
only performed at the source and the relay will simply utilize the selected
mapping scheme without changing it. The analyses of average outage probability,
network capacity and symbol error rate (SER) are given in closed form for
decode-and-forward (DF) relaying networks and are substantiated by numerical
results generated by Monte Carlo simulations.Comment: 30 page
