Physical Layer Service Integration in 5G: Potentials and Challenges
High transmission rate and secure communication have been identified as the
key targets that need to be effectively addressed by fifth generation (5G)
wireless systems. In this context, the concept of physical-layer security
becomes attractive, as it can establish perfect security using only the
characteristics of wireless medium. Nonetheless, to further increase the
spectral efficiency, an emerging concept, termed physical-layer service
integration (PHY-SI), has been recognized as an effective means. Its basic idea
is to combine multiple coexisting services, i.e., multicast/broadcast service
and confidential service, into one integral service for one-time transmission
at the transmitter side. This article first provides a tutorial on typical
PHY-SI models. Furthermore, we propose some state-of-the-art solutions to
improve the overall performance of PHY-SI in certain important communication
scenarios. In particular, we highlight the extension of several concepts
borrowed from conventional single-service communications, such as artificial
noise (AN), eigenmode transmission etc., to the scenario of PHY-SI. These
techniques are shown to be effective in the design of reliable and robust
PHY-SI schemes. Finally, several potential research directions are identified
for future work.Comment: 12 pages, 7 figure
Capacity Gain from Two-Transmitter and Two-Receiver Cooperation
Capacity improvement from transmitter and receiver cooperation is
investigated in a two-transmitter, two-receiver network with phase fading and
full channel state information available at all terminals. The transmitters
cooperate by first exchanging messages over an orthogonal transmitter
cooperation channel, then encoding jointly with dirty paper coding. The
receivers cooperate by using Wyner-Ziv compress-and-forward over an analogous
orthogonal receiver cooperation channel. To account for the cost of
cooperation, the allocation of network power and bandwidth among the data and
cooperation channels is studied. It is shown that transmitter cooperation
outperforms receiver cooperation and improves capacity over non-cooperative
transmission under most operating conditions when the cooperation channel is
strong. However, a weak cooperation channel limits the transmitter cooperation
rate; in this case receiver cooperation is more advantageous.
Transmitter-and-receiver cooperation offers sizable additional capacity gain
over transmitter-only cooperation at low SNR, whereas at high SNR transmitter
cooperation alone captures most of the cooperative capacity improvement.Comment: Accepted for publication in IEEE Transactions on Information Theor
Cooperative Jamming for Secure Communications in MIMO Relay Networks
Secure communications can be impeded by eavesdroppers in conventional relay
systems. This paper proposes cooperative jamming strategies for two-hop relay
networks where the eavesdropper can wiretap the relay channels in both hops. In
these approaches, the normally inactive nodes in the relay network can be used
as cooperative jamming sources to confuse the eavesdropper. Linear precoding
schemes are investigated for two scenarios where single or multiple data
streams are transmitted via a decode-and-forward (DF) relay, under the
assumption that global channel state information (CSI) is available. For the
case of single data stream transmission, we derive closed-form jamming
beamformers and the corresponding optimal power allocation. Generalized
singular value decomposition (GSVD)-based secure relaying schemes are proposed
for the transmission of multiple data streams. The optimal power allocation is
found for the GSVD relaying scheme via geometric programming. Based on this
result, a GSVD-based cooperative jamming scheme is proposed that shows
significant improvement in terms of secrecy rate compared to the approach
without jamming. Furthermore, the case involving an eavesdropper with unknown
CSI is also investigated in this paper. Simulation results show that the
secrecy rate is dramatically increased when inactive nodes in the relay network
participate in cooperative jamming.Comment: 30 pages, 7 figures, to appear in IEEE Transactions on Signal

Cooperative Transmission for a Vector Gaussian Parallel Relay Network
In this paper, we consider a parallel relay network where two relays
cooperatively help a source transmit to a destination. We assume the source and
the destination nodes are equipped with multiple antennas. Three basic schemes
and their achievable rates are studied: Decode-and-Forward (DF),
Amplify-and-Forward (AF), and Compress-and-Forward (CF). For the DF scheme, the
source transmits two private signals, one for each relay, where dirty paper
coding (DPC) is used between the two private streams, and a common signal for
both relays. The relays make efficient use of the common information to
introduce a proper amount of correlation in the transmission to the
destination. We show that the DF scheme achieves the capacity under certain
conditions. We also show that the CF scheme is asymptotically optimal in the
high relay power limit, regardless of channel ranks. It turns out that the AF
scheme also achieves the asymptotic optimality but only when the
relays-to-destination channel is full rank. The relative advantages of the
three schemes are discussed with numerical results.Comment: 35 pages, 10 figures, submitted to IEEE Transactions on Information

Joint Source and Relay Precoding Designs for MIMO Two-Way Relaying Based on MSE Criterion
Properly designed precoders can significantly improve the spectral efficiency
of multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) relay systems. In this paper, we
investigate joint source and relay precoding design based on the
mean-square-error (MSE) criterion in MIMO two-way relay systems, where two
multi-antenna source nodes exchange information via a multi-antenna
amplify-and-forward relay node. This problem is non-convex and its optimal
solution remains unsolved. Aiming to find an efficient way to solve the
problem, we first decouple the primal problem into three tractable
sub-problems, and then propose an iterative precoding design algorithm based on
alternating optimization. The solution to each sub-problem is optimal and
unique, thus the convergence of the iterative algorithm is guaranteed.
Secondly, we propose a structured precoding design to lower the computational
complexity. The proposed precoding structure is able to parallelize the
channels in the multiple access (MAC) phase and broadcast (BC) phase. It thus
reduces the precoding design to a simple power allocation problem. Lastly, for
the special case where only a single data stream is transmitted from each
source node, we present a source-antenna-selection (SAS) based precoding design
algorithm. This algorithm selects only one antenna for transmission from each
source and thus requires lower signalling overhead. Comprehensive simulation is
conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of all the proposed precoding designs.Comment: 32 pages, 10 figure
