    Governance mechanisms and metrics for digital platform workers : Multiple case study of digital labour platforms

    Aim: This study aims to reveal which governance mechanisms and their metrics digital labour platforms use and how they are used to govern platform workers. Moreover, this study's purpose is to analyse three different digital labour platform companies related to the governance of platform workers. The study aims to form and test a framework for the digital labour platform governance mechanisms and their metrics based on a literature review and empirical findings. Framework: The study framework combines traditional firm governance, digital platform governance and crowdwork governance theories. In addition, the concepts of control and coordi-nation in governance mechanisms are presented in the literature review of governance theory. The themes are combined to form a framework for digital labour platform governance mechanisms for platform workers. Methodology: The empirical research section is formed with qualitative research and multiple case study method. The approach of the study is subjectivist. Moreover, interpretivism and critical realism views are used because they fit the people-oriented and multi-dimensional research theme. The research data is collected with interviews of the case companies’ representatives who were in positions to know the subjects. The findings reveal what and how governance mechanisms and metrics are used in digital labour platforms to govern platform workers. In addition, the results show two new governance mechanisms: platform worker training and activity monitoring. Governance mechanisms identified include access control, activity monitoring, task management, incentive management, contract management, and training in every case company. In contrast, only two companies used reputation monitoring, quality control, and behavioural control. The findings differ somewhat between the case companies. The reason for the variation between the companies might be due to the variety in the level of autonomy and skill levels of platform workers. The governance mechanisms and metrics findings are brought together into a framework. Also, this study revealed new information about governance metrics of digital labour platforms, which had a little information in the literature. Thus, the governance metrics found in this study give significant new knowledge about the subject. They help to show how firms can use the data for platform worker governance in digital platforms. For instance, user logins, system usage, and profile completion rate measure platform workers' activity. These findings can help digital labour platform companies better understand many possibilities in ways to govern digital labour workers.Tavoite: Tämän tutkimuksen tavoitteena on selvittää digitaalisten työtä välittävien alustojen alustatyöntekijöihin kohdistuvia hallintamekanismeja ja niiden mittareita. Tarkoituksena on analysoida kolmen case yrityksen alustatoimintaa suhteessa alustatyöntekijöiden hallintaan. Tutkimuksessa muodostetaan viitekehys digitaalisten alustojen hallintamekanismeista ja niiden mittareista kirjallisuuskatsauksen ja empiirisen tutkimuksen perusteella. Viitekehys: Tämän tutkimuksen viitekehyksessä yhdistyy perinteisten yritysten hallintamekanismeja, joukkotyöhön liitettyjä hallintamekanismeja sekä digitaalisten alustojen jo tiedettyjä hallintamekanismeja. Lisäksi kontrollin ja koordinaation konseptit liittyen työntekijöiden hallintaan esitetään kirjallisuuskatsauksessa ja ne liitetään osaksi viitekehystä. Myös joitain vähän tiedettyjä hallintamittareita on lisätty viitekehykseen. Näistä teemoista muodostuu tutkimuksen viitekehys alustojen alustatyöntekijöille suunnatuille hallintamekanismeille ja niiden mittareille. Metodologia: Empiirinen tutkimus koostuu laadullisesta tutkimuksesta ja usean tapaustutkimuksen menetelmästä. Tutkimuksen lähestymistapa on subjektiivinen. Lisäksi interpretivismin ja kriittisen realismin lähestymistapoja käytetään tutkimuksen analysoimisessa, sillä ne soveltuvat tutkimuksen ihmislähtöiseen ja moniulotteiseen teemaan. Tutkimuksen aineistonkeruumenetelmänä käytetään case yritysten edustajien haastatteluja. Tulokset: Tutkimuksen tulokset osoittavat, että mitä ja kuinka hallintamekanismeja ja niiden mittareita käytetään digitaalisilla alustoilla alustatyöntekijöiden hallitsemiseen. Tulokset osoittavat myös kaksi uutta hallintamekanismia: alustatyöntekijöiden kouluttamisen ja aktiivisuuden valvomisen. Hallintamekanismeista tunnistettiin pääsyn valvonta, tehtävänhallinta, sopimushallinta, ja kouluttaminen kaikissa case-yrityksissä. Sen sijaan vain kahdessa yrityksessä tunnistettiin maineen valvonta, laadun valvonta ja käyttäytymisenhallinta. Syyt vaihteluihin yritysten välillä saattavat johtua alustatyöntekijöiden erilaisista autonomian tasoista ja taitotasoista. Tulokset hallintamekanismeista ja niiden mittareista digitaalisilla alustoilla on kerätty yhteen viitekehykseen. Tutkimuksessa selvisi uutta tietoa hallintamittareista, joista ei ollut aiemmin paljon tietoa kirjallisuudessa. Siksi hallintamittarit, jotka onnistuttiin löytämään tässä tutkimuksessa antavat merkittävää uutta tietoa aiheesta. Ne auttavat yrityksiä ymmärtämään kuinka hyödyntää dataa alustatyöntekijöiden hallitsemisessa. esimerkiksi aktiivisuuden valvomisessa voidaan käyttää mittareina käyttäjän sisäänkirjautumisia, järjestelmän käyttämistä, ja profiilin valmiusastetta.     Quality control and cost management in crowdsourcing

    By harvesting online workers’ knowledge, crowdsourcing has become an efficient and cost-effective way to obtain a large amount of labeled data for solving human intelligent tasks (HITs), such as entity resolution and sentiment analysis. Due to the open nature of crowdsourcing, online workers with different knowledge backgrounds may provide conflicting labels to tasks. Therefore, it is a common practice to perform a pre-determined number of assignments, either per task or for all tasks, and aggregate collected labels to infer the true label of tasks. This model could suffer from poor accuracy in case of under-budget or a waste of resource in case of over-budget. In addition, as worker labels are usually aggregated in a voting manner, crowdsourcing systems are vulnerable to strategic Sybil attack, where the attacker may manipulate several robot Sybil workers to share randomized labels for outvoting independent workers and apply various strategies to evade Sybil detection. In this thesis, we are specifically interested in providing a guaranteed aggregation accuracy with minimum worker cost and defending against strategic Sybil attack. In our first work, we assume that workers are independent and honest. By enforcing a specified accuracy threshold on aggregated labels and minimizing the worker cost under this requirement, we formulate the dual requirements for quality and cost as a Guaranteed Accuracy Problem (GAP) and present an efficient task assignment algorithm for solving the problem. In our second work, we assume that strategic Sybil attackers may coordinate Sybil workers to obtain rewards without honestly labeling tasks and apply different strategies to evade detection. By camouflaging golden tasks (i.e., tasks with known true labels) from the attacker and suppressing the impact of Sybil workers and low-quality independent workers, we extend the principled truth discovery to defend against strategic Sybil attack in crowdsorucing. For both works, we conduct comprehensive empirical evaluations on real and synthetic datasets to demonstrate the effectiveness and efficiency of our methods

    Augmented Human Machine Intelligence for Distributed Inference

    With the advent of the internet of things (IoT) era and the extensive deployment of smart devices and wireless sensor networks (WSNs), interactions of humans and machine data are everywhere. In numerous applications, humans are essential parts in the decision making process, where they may either serve as information sources or act as the final decision makers. For various tasks including detection and classification of targets, detection of outliers, generation of surveillance patterns and interactions between entities, seamless integration of the human and the machine expertise is required where they simultaneously work within the same modeling environment to understand and solve problems. Efficient fusion of information from both human and sensor sources is expected to improve system performance and enhance situational awareness. Such human-machine inference networks seek to build an interactive human-machine symbiosis by merging the best of the human with the best of the machine and to achieve higher performance than either humans or machines by themselves. In this dissertation, we consider that people often have a number of biases and rely on heuristics when exposed to different kinds of uncertainties, e.g., limited information versus unreliable information. We develop novel theoretical frameworks for collaborative decision making in complex environments when the observers may include both humans and physics-based sensors. We address fundamental concerns such as uncertainties, cognitive biases in human decision making and derive human decision rules in binary decision making. We model the decision-making by generic humans working in complex networked environments that feature uncertainties, and develop new approaches and frameworks facilitating collaborative human decision making and cognitive multi-modal fusion. The first part of this dissertation exploits the behavioral economics concept Prospect Theory to study the behavior of human binary decision making under cognitive biases. Several decision making systems involving humans\u27 participation are discussed, and we show the impact of human cognitive biases on the decision making performance. We analyze how heterogeneity could affect the performance of collaborative human decision making in the presence of complex correlation relationships among the behavior of humans and design the human selection strategy at the population level. Next, we employ Prospect Theory to model the rationality of humans and accurately characterize their behaviors in answering binary questions. We design a weighted majority voting rule to solve classification problems via crowdsourcing while considering that the crowd may include some spammers. We also propose a novel sequential task ordering algorithm to improve system performance for classification in crowdsourcing composed of unreliable human workers. In the second part of the dissertation, we study the behavior of cognitive memory limited humans in binary decision making and develop efficient approaches to help memory constrained humans make better decisions. We show that the order in which information is presented to the humans impacts their decision making performance. Next, we consider the selfish behavior of humans and construct a unified incentive mechanism for IoT based inference systems while addressing the selfish concerns of the participants. We derive the optimal amount of energy that a selfish sensor involved in the signal detection task must spend in order to maximize a certain utility function, in the presence of buyers who value the result of signal detection carried out by the sensor. Finally, we design a human-machine collaboration framework that blends both machine observations and human expertise to solve binary hypothesis testing problems semi-autonomously. In networks featuring human-machine teaming/collaboration, it is critical to coordinate and synthesize the operations of the humans and machines (e.g., robots and physical sensors). Machine measurements affect human behaviors, actions, and decisions. Human behavior defines the optimal decision-making algorithm for human-machine networks. In today\u27s era of artificial intelligence, we not only aim to exploit augmented human-machine intelligence to ensure accurate decision making; but also expand intelligent systems so as to assist and improve such intelligence
