    Beamforming and Direction of Arrival Estimation Based on Vector Sensor Arrays

    Array signal processing is a technique linked closely to radar and sonar systems. In communication, the antenna array in these systems is applied to cancel the interference, suppress the background noise and track the target sources based on signals'parameters. Most of existing work ignores the polarisation status of the impinging signals and is mainly focused on their direction parameters. To have a better performance in array processing, polarized signals can be considered in array signal processing and their property can be exploited by employing various electromagnetic vector sensor arrays. In this thesis, firstly, a full quaternion-valued model for polarized array processing is proposed based on the Capon beamformer. This new beamformer uses crossed-dipole array and considers the desired signal as quaternion-valued. Two scenarios are dealt with, where the beamformer works at a normal environment without data model errors or with model errors under the worst-case constraint. After that, an algorithm to solve the joint DOA and polarisation estimation problem is proposed. The algorithm applies the rank reduction method to use two 2-D searches instead of a 4-D search to estimate the joint parameters. Moreover, an analysis is given to introduce the difference using crossed-dipole sensor array and tripole sensor array, which indicates that linear crossed-dipole sensor array has an ambiguity problem in the estimation work and the linear tripole sensor array avoid this problem effectively. At last, we study the problem of DOA estimation for a mixture of single signal transmission (SST) signals and duel signal transmission (DST) signals. Two solutions are proposed: the first is a two-step method to estimate the parameters of SST and DST signals separately; the second one is a unified one-step method to estimate SST and DST signals together, without treating them separately in the estimation process

    Antennas and beam-steering arrays for polarization diversity and full-duplex applications

    This thesis presents new designs for polarization diverse dielectric resonator antennas (DRAs) as well as antennas that can offer efficient full-duplex (FD) functionality. Basically, this research effort has been completed to meet the demands of modern tracking systems as well as in-band full-duplex communication systems. For these applications antenna polarization control, compatibility, co-location, and isolation are the important parameters to support these high-performance systems. The first part of the thesis covers the challenges of modern radio frequency (RF) environments where the proposed polarization reconfigurable antennas are introduced. At first, a multi-port DRA is outlined as a possible candidate for the global positioning system (GPS) and the Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS). To further advance this original design, and in an effort to reduce the size whilst maintaining polarization control, an integrated circuit was also proposed and tested. Advancing from the research work of phase polarization control using DRAs, the second part of the thesis studies other new antennas which are suitable for FD communications. Those antennas offer high isolation which makes the signal recoverable for those FD systems. To advance the state-of-the-art, an H-shaped slot antenna arrangement with parasitic patches and dual-differential feeding was proposed. The antenna architecture was investigated with both external and integrated feed systems and both prototypes offer high isolation levels. The single-element was further integrated into a 1×4 antenna array which was shown to offer similar isolation levels and with the capability to beam steer. Further research included high isolation antennas for operation in the 5G mm-wave band. In particular, a new FD pattern reconfigurable antenna was proposed which can be used in dual-polarized radars and other FD systems. Depending on the input phase excitation, the beam pattern control can be established with sum or difference patterns or both. Also, the antenna concept was further extended into a novel FD antenna array. This array has a similar common and/or differential feeding which can provide sum or difference patterns in the far-field. Also, an external Butler matrix was used to investigate the beam-steering capabilities of the array. These antenna systems also have applications for dual-polarized radars, retro-directive arrays, and other beam-tracking scenarios which require high inter-port isolation.James Watt Scholarshi

    Human Body Scattering Effects at Millimeter Waves Frequencies for Future 5G Systems and Beyond

    [ES] Se espera que las futuras comunicaciones móviles experimenten una revolución técnica que vaya más allá de las velocidades de datos de Gbps y reduzca las latencias de las velocidades de datos a niveles muy cercanos al milisegundo. Se han investigado nuevas tecnologías habilitadoras para lograr estas exigentes especificaciones. Y la utilización de las bandas de ondas milimétricas, donde hay mucho espectro disponible, es una de ellas. Debido a las numerosas dificultades técnicas asociadas a la utilización de esta banda de frecuencias, se necesitan complicados modelos de canal para anticipar las características del canal de radio y evaluar con precisión el rendimiento de los sistemas celulares en milimétricas. En concreto, los modelos de propagación más precisos son los basados en técnicas de trazado de rayos deterministas. Pero estas técnicas tienen el estigma de ser computacionalmente exigentes, y esto dificulta su uso para caracterizar el canal de radio en escenarios interiores complejos y dinámicos. La complejidad de la caracterización de estos escenarios depende en gran medida de la interacción del cuerpo humano con el entorno radioeléctrico, que en las ondas milimétricas suele ser destructiva y muy impredecible. Por otro lado, en los últimos años, la industria de los videojuegos ha desarrollado potentes herramientas para entornos hiperrealistas, donde la mayor parte de los avances en esta emulación de la realidad tienen que ver con el manejo de la luz. Así, los motores gráficos de estas plataformas se han vuelto cada vez más eficientes para manejar grandes volúmenes de información, por lo que son ideales para emular el comportamiento de la propagación de las ondas de radio, así como para reconstruir un escenario interior complejo. Por ello, en esta Tesis se ha aprovechado la capacidad computacional de este tipo de herramientas para evaluar el canal radioeléctrico milimétricas de la forma más eficiente posible. Esta Tesis ofrece unas pautas para optimizar la propagación de la señal en milimétricas en un entorno interior dinámico y complejo, para lo cual se proponen tres objetivos principales. El primer objetivo es evaluar los efectos de dispersión del cuerpo humano cuando interactúa con el canal de propagación. Una vez evaluado, se propuso un modelo matemático y geométrico simplificado para calcular este efecto de forma fiable y rápida. Otro objetivo fue el diseño de un reflector pasivo modular en milimétricas, que optimiza la cobertura en entornos de interior, evitando la interferencia del ser humano en la propagación. Y, por último, se diseñó un sistema de apuntamiento del haz predictivo en tiempo real, para que opere con el sistema de radiación en milimétricas, cuyo objetivo es evitar las pérdidas de propagación causadas por el cuerpo humano en entornos interiores dinámicos y complejos.[CA] S'espera que les futures comunicacions mòbils experimenten una revolució tècnica que vaja més enllà de les velocitats de dades de Gbps i reduïsca les latències de les velocitats de dades a nivells molt pròxims al milisegundo. Però estes tècniques tenen l'estigma de ser computacionalment exigents, i açò dificulta el seu ús per a caracteritzar el canal de ràdio en escenaris interiors complexos i dinàmics. La complexitat de la caracterització d'estos escenaris depén en gran manera de la interacció del cos humà amb l'entorn radioelèctric, que en les ones millimètriques sol ser destructiva i molt impredicible. D'altra banda, en els últims anys, la indústria dels videojocs ha desenrotllat potents ferramentes per a entorns hiperrealistes, on la major part dels avanços en esta emulació de la realitat tenen a veure amb el maneig de la llum. Així, els motors gràfics d'estes plataformes s'han tornat cada vegada més eficients per a manejar grans volums d'informació, per la qual cosa són ideals per a emular el comportament de la propagació de les ones de ràdio, així com per a reconstruir un escenari interior complex. Per això, en esta Tesi s'ha aprofitat la capacitat computacional d'este tipus de ferramentes per a avaluar el canal radioelèctric millimètriques de la manera més eficient possible. Esta Tesi oferix unes pautes per a optimitzar la propagació del senyal en millimètriques en un entorn interior dinàmic i complex, per a la qual cosa es proposen tres objectius principals. El primer objectiu és avaluar els efectes de dispersió del cos humà quan interactua amb el canal de propagació. Una vegada avaluat, es va proposar un model matemàtic i geomètric simplificat per a calcular este efecte de forma fiable i ràpida. Un altre objectiu va ser el disseny d'un reflector passiu modular en millimètriques, que optimitza la cobertura en entorns d'interior, evitant la interferència del ser humà en la propagació, per a així evitar pèrdues de propagació addicionals. I, finalment, es va dissenyar un sistema d'apuntament del feix predictiu en temps real, perquè opere amb el sistema de radiació en millimètriques, l'objectiu del qual és evitar les pèrdues de propagació causades pel cos humà en entorns interiors dinàmics i complexos.[EN] Future mobile communications are expected to experience a technical revolution that goes beyond Gbps data rates and reduces data rate latencies to levels very close to a millisecond. New enabling technologies have been researched to achieve these demanding specifications. The utilization of mmWave bands, where a lot of spectrum is available, is one of them. Due to the numerous technical difficulties associated with using this frequency band, complicated channel models are necessary to anticipate the radio channel characteristics and to accurately evaluate the performance of cellular systems in mmWave. In particular, the most accurate propagation models are those based on deterministic ray tracing techniques. But these techniques have the stigma of being computationally intensive, and this makes it difficult to use them to characterize the radio channel in complex and dynamic indoor scenarios. The complexity of characterizing these scenarios depends largely on the interaction of the human body with the radio environment, which at mmWaves is often destructive and highly unpredictable. On the other hand, in recent years, the video game industry has developed powerful tools for hyper-realistic environments, where most of the progress in this reality emulation has to do with the handling of light. Therefore, the graphic engines of these platforms have become more and more efficient to handle large volumes of information, becoming ideal to emulate the radio wave propagation behavior, as well as to reconstruct a complex interior scenario. Therefore, in this Thesis one has taken advantage of the computational capacity of this type of tools to evaluate the mmWave radio channel in the most efficient way possible. This Thesis offers some guidelines to optimize the signal propagation in mmWaves in a dynamic and complex indoor environment, for which three main objectives are proposed. The first objective has been to evaluate the scattering effects of the human body when it interacts with the propagation channel. Once evaluated, a simplified mathematical and geometrical model has been proposed to calculate this effect in a reliable and fast way. Another objective has been the design of a modular passive reflector in mmWaves, which optimizes the coverage in indoor environments, avoiding human interference in the propagation, in order to avoid its harmful scattering effects. And finally, a real-time predictive beam steering system has been designed for the mmWaves radiation system, in order to avoid propagation losses caused by the human body in dynamic and complex indoor environments.Romero Peña, JS.     Employing data fusion & diversity in the applications of adaptive signal processing

    The paradigm of adaptive signal processing is a simple yet powerful method for the class of system identification problems. The classical approaches consider standard one-dimensional signals whereby the model can be formulated by flat-view matrix/vector framework. Nevertheless, the rapidly increasing availability of large-scale multisensor/multinode measurement technology has render no longer sufficient the traditional way of representing the data. To this end, the author, who from this point onward shall be referred to as `we', `us', and `our' to signify the author myself and other supporting contributors i.e. my supervisor, my colleagues and other overseas academics specializing in the specific pieces of research endeavor throughout this thesis, has applied the adaptive filtering framework to problems that employ the techniques of data diversity and fusion which includes quaternions, tensors and graphs. At the first glance, all these structures share one common important feature: invertible isomorphism. In other words, they are algebraically one-to-one related in real vector space. Furthermore, it is our continual course of research that affords a segue of all these three data types. Firstly, we proposed novel quaternion-valued adaptive algorithms named the n-moment widely linear quaternion least mean squares (WL-QLMS) and c-moment WL-LMS. Both are as fast as the recursive-least-squares method but more numerically robust thanks to the lack of matrix inversion. Secondly, the adaptive filtering method is applied to a more complex task: the online tensor dictionary learning named online multilinear dictionary learning (OMDL). The OMDL is partly inspired by the derivation of the c-moment WL-LMS due to its parsimonious formulae. In addition, the sequential higher-order compressed sensing (HO-CS) is also developed to couple with the OMDL to maximally utilize the learned dictionary for the best possible compression. Lastly, we consider graph random processes which actually are multivariate random processes with spatiotemporal (or vertex-time) relationship. Similar to tensor dictionary, one of the main challenges in graph signal processing is sparsity constraint in the graph topology, a challenging issue for online methods. We introduced a novel splitting gradient projection into this adaptive graph filtering to successfully achieve sparse topology. Extensive experiments were conducted to support the analysis of all the algorithms proposed in this thesis, as well as pointing out potentials, limitations and as-yet-unaddressed issues in these research endeavor.Open Acces

    Application of advanced technology to space automation

The results of this study strongly accentuate this statement and should provide further incentive for immediate development of specific automtion technology as defined herein.     The geodesy of Mercury with the missions MESSENGER and BepiColombo

    The work is organized in six chapters. Chapter 1 introduces briefly the exploration of Mercury highlighting the generic characteristics of the planet and its research with space probes. Chapter 2 is focused on the orbit determination for the geodesy of Mercury. We present here the overall description of radio science experiments, showing the measurements and the geodetic models, and the codes of the orbit determination for interplanetary spacecraft. Chapter 3 describes the MESSENGER mission and radio science experiment. Here, we report on the analysis of the radio tracking data showing the orbit reconstruction and the estimated model of the Hermean gravity field and ephemeris. Chapter 4 is about the mission BepiColombo and the Mercury Orbiter Radio science Experiment. We carried out a new set of numerical simulations that provides attainable accuracies in the gravity field estimation. Chapter 5 summarizes the consequences of the estimated Hermean gravity field on the geodesy of the planet and the orbit evolution of the BepiColombo spacecraft.
