Shortest path or anchor-based route choice: a large-scale empirical analysis of minicab routing in London
Understanding and modelling route choice behaviour is central to predicting the formation and propagation of urban road congestion. Yet within conventional literature disagreements persist around the nature of route choice behaviour, and how it should be modelled. In this paper, both the shortest path and anchor-based perspectives on route choice behaviour are explored through an empirical analysis of nearly 700,000 minicab routes across London, United Kingdom. In the first set of analyses, the degree of similarity between observed routes and possible shortest paths is established. Shortest paths demonstrate poor performance in predicting both observed route choice and characteristics. The second stage of analysis explores the influence of specific urban features, named anchors, in route choice. These analyses show that certain features attract more route choices than would be expected were individuals choosing route based on cost minimisation alone. Instead, the results indicate that major urban features form the basis of route choice planning – being selected disproportionately more often, and causing asymmetry in route choice volumes by direction of travel. At a finer scale, decisions made at minor road features are furthermore demonstrated to influence routing patterns. The results indicate a need to revisit the basis of how routes are modelled, shifting from the shortest path perspective to a mechanism structured around urban features. In concluding, the main trends are synthesised within an initial framework for route choice modelling, and presents potential extensions of this research
RIOT: a simple graphical assembly tool
Errors in the chip assembly process are harder to find than errors in cell design, since they belong to no specific part of the design, but rather to the assembly as a whole.
Assembly errors are more costly than call design errors also, since they often go unnoticed until late in the design cycle. Interactive graphic tools typically require that assembly be done with primitive graphical operations, which are inappropriate far the assembly task. Language-based tools give more powerful assembly operations, but remove the two dimensional view of the chip
necessary to visualize many assembly operations.
Riot is a simple Interactive graphical tool designed to facilitate the assembly of cells into integrated systems. Riot supplies the user with primitive operations of connection -- abutment, routing and stretching - in an interactive graphic environment. Thus, the designer retains full control of the design, including the assignment of positions to instances of cells and the choice
of connection mechanism. The computer takes care of the tedious and exacting implementation detail, guaranteeing that connections are actually made. The powerful connection primitives give the user of Riot the ability to quickly assemble a custom chip from a collection of low-level

Towards the fast and robust optimal design of Wireless Body Area Networks
Wireless body area networks are wireless sensor networks whose adoption has
recently emerged and spread in important healthcare applications, such as the
remote monitoring of health conditions of patients. A major issue associated
with the deployment of such networks is represented by energy consumption: in
general, the batteries of the sensors cannot be easily replaced and recharged,
so containing the usage of energy by a rational design of the network and of
the routing is crucial. Another issue is represented by traffic uncertainty:
body sensors may produce data at a variable rate that is not exactly known in
advance, for example because the generation of data is event-driven. Neglecting
traffic uncertainty may lead to wrong design and routing decisions, which may
compromise the functionality of the network and have very bad effects on the
health of the patients. In order to address these issues, in this work we
propose the first robust optimization model for jointly optimizing the topology
and the routing in body area networks under traffic uncertainty. Since the
problem may result challenging even for a state-of-the-art optimization solver,
we propose an original optimization algorithm that exploits suitable linear
relaxations to guide a randomized fixing of the variables, supported by an
exact large variable neighborhood search. Experiments on realistic instances
indicate that our algorithm performs better than a state-of-the-art solver,
fast producing solutions associated with improved optimality gaps.Comment: Authors' manuscript version of the paper that was published in

Recognizing and Drawing IC-planar Graphs
IC-planar graphs are those graphs that admit a drawing where no two crossed
edges share an end-vertex and each edge is crossed at most once. They are a
proper subfamily of the 1-planar graphs. Given an embedded IC-planar graph
with vertices, we present an -time algorithm that computes a
straight-line drawing of in quadratic area, and an -time algorithm
that computes a straight-line drawing of with right-angle crossings in
exponential area. Both these area requirements are worst-case optimal. We also
show that it is NP-complete to test IC-planarity both in the general case and
in the case in which a rotation system is fixed for the input graph.
Furthermore, we describe a polynomial-time algorithm to test whether a set of
matching edges can be added to a triangulated planar graph such that the
resulting graph is IC-planar

Horizontal cooling towers: riverine ecosystem services and the fate of thermoelectric heat in the contemporary Northeast US
The electricity sector is dependent on rivers to provide ecosystem services that help regulate excess heat, either through provision of water for evaporative cooling or by conveying, diluting and attenuating waste heat inputs. Reliance on these ecosystem services alters flow and temperature regimes, which impact fish habitat and other aquatic ecosystem services. We demonstrate the contemporary (2000–2010) dependence of the electricity sector on riverine ecosystem services and associated aquatic impacts in the Northeast US, a region with a high density of thermoelectric power plants. We quantify these dynamics using a spatially distributed hydrology and water temperature model (the framework for aquatic modeling in the Earth system), coupled with the thermoelectric power and thermal pollution model. We find that 28.4% of thermoelectric heat production is transferred to rivers, whereas 25.9% is directed to vertical cooling towers. Regionally, only 11.3% of heat transferred to rivers is dissipated to the atmosphere and the rest is delivered to coasts, in part due to the distribution of power plants within the river system. Impacts to the flow regime are minimal, while impacts to the thermal regime include increased river lengths of unsuitable habitats for fish with maximum thermal tolerances of 24.0, 29.0, and 34.0 ° C in segments downstream of plants by 0.6%, 9.8%, and 53.9%, respectively. Our analysis highlights the interactions among electricity production, cooling technologies, aquatic impacts, and ecosystem services, and can be used to assess the full costs and tradeoffs of electricity production at regional scales

A high resolution coupled hydrologic–hydraulic model (HiResFlood-UCI) for flash flood modeling
HiResFlood-UCI was developed by coupling the NWS's hydrologic model (HL-RDHM) with the hydraulic model (BreZo) for flash flood modeling at decameter resolutions. The coupled model uses HL-RDHM as a rainfall-runoff generator and replaces the routing scheme of HL-RDHM with the 2D hydraulic model (BreZo) in order to predict localized flood depths and velocities. A semi-automated technique of unstructured mesh generation was developed to cluster an adequate density of computational cells along river channels such that numerical errors are negligible compared with other sources of error, while ensuring that computational costs of the hydraulic model are kept to a bare minimum. HiResFlood-UCI was implemented for a watershed (ELDO2) in the DMIP2 experiment domain in Oklahoma. Using synthetic precipitation input, the model was tested for various components including HL-RDHM parameters (a priori versus calibrated), channel and floodplain Manning n values, DEM resolution (10 m versus 30 m) and computation mesh resolution (10 m+ versus 30 m+). Simulations with calibrated versus a priori parameters of HL-RDHM show that HiResFlood-UCI produces reasonable results with the a priori parameters from NWS. Sensitivities to hydraulic model resistance parameters, mesh resolution and DEM resolution are also identified, pointing to the importance of model calibration and validation for accurate prediction of localized flood intensities. HiResFlood-UCI performance was examined using 6 measured precipitation events as model input for model calibration and validation of the streamflow at the outlet. The Nash–Sutcliffe Efficiency (NSE) obtained ranges from 0.588 to 0.905. The model was also validated for the flooded map using USGS observed water level at an interior point. The predicted flood stage error is 0.82 m or less, based on a comparison to measured stage. Validation of stage and discharge predictions builds confidence in model predictions of flood extent and localized velocities, which are fundamental to reliable flash flood warning
CBPRS: A City Based Parking and Routing System
Navigational systems assist drivers in finding a route between two locations that is time optimal in theory but seldom in practice due to delaying circumstances the system is unaware of, such as traffic jams. Upon arrival at the destination the service of the system ends and the driver is forced to locate a parking place without further assistance. We propose a City Based Parking Routing System (CBPRS) that monitors and reserves parking places for CBPRS participants within a city. The CBPRS guides vehicles using an ant based distributed hierarchical routing algorithm to their reserved parking place. Through means of experiments in a simulation environment we found that reductions of travel times for participants were significant in comparison to a situation where vehicles relied on static routing information generated by the well known Dijkstra’s algorithm. Furthermore, we found that the CBPRS was able to increase city wide traffic flows and decrease the number and duration of traffic jams throughout the city once the number of participants increased.information systems;computer simulation;dynamic routing
