    Efficient Mission Planning for Robot Networks in Communication Constrained Environments

    Many robotic systems are remotely operated nowadays that require uninterrupted connection and safe mission planning. Such systems are commonly found in military drones, search and rescue operations, mining robotics, agriculture, and environmental monitoring. Different robotic systems may employ disparate communication modalities such as radio network, visible light communication, satellite, infrared, Wi-Fi. However, in an autonomous mission where the robots are expected to be interconnected, communication constrained environment frequently arises due to the out of range problem or unavailability of the signal. Furthermore, several automated projects (building construction, assembly line) do not guarantee uninterrupted communication, and a safe project plan is required that optimizes collision risks, cost, and duration. In this thesis, we propose four pronged approaches to alleviate some of these issues: 1) Communication aware world mapping; 2) Communication preserving using the Line-of-Sight (LoS); 3) Communication aware safe planning; and 4) Multi-Objective motion planning for navigation. First, we focus on developing a communication aware world map that integrates traditional world models with the planning of multi-robot placement. Our proposed communication map selects the optimal placement of a chain of intermediate relay vehicles in order to maximize communication quality to a remote unit. We also vi propose an algorithm to build a min-Arborescence tree when there are multiple remote units to be served. Second, in communication denied environments, we use Line-of-Sight (LoS) to establish communication between mobile robots, control their movements and relay information to other autonomous units. We formulate and study the complexity of a multi-robot relay network positioning problem and propose approximation algorithms that restore visibility based connectivity through the relocation of one or more robots. Third, we develop a framework to quantify the safety score of a fully automated robotic mission where the coexistence of human and robot may pose a collision risk. A number of alternate mission plans are analyzed using motion planning algorithms to select the safest one. Finally, an efficient multi-objective optimization based path planning for the robots is developed to deal with several Pareto optimal cost attributes

    A Dynamical System Approach for Resource-Constrained Mobile Robotics

    The revolution of autonomous vehicles has led to the development of robots with abundant sensors, actuators with many degrees of freedom, high-performance computing capabilities, and high-speed communication devices. These robots use a large volume of information from sensors to solve diverse problems. However, this usually leads to a significant modeling burden as well as excessive cost and computational requirements. Furthermore, in some scenarios, sophisticated sensors may not work precisely, the real-time processing power of a robot may be inadequate, the communication among robots may be impeded by natural or adversarial conditions, or the actuation control in a robot may be insubstantial. In these cases, we have to rely on simple robots with limited sensing and actuation, minimal onboard processing, moderate communication, and insufficient memory capacity. This reality motivates us to model simple robots such as bouncing and underactuated robots making use of the dynamical system techniques. In this dissertation, we propose a four-pronged approach for solving tasks in resource-constrained scenarios: 1) Combinatorial filters for bouncing robot localization; 2) Bouncing robot navigation and coverage; 3) Stochastic multi-robot patrolling; and 4) Deployment and planning of underactuated aquatic robots. First, we present a global localization method for a bouncing robot equipped with only a clock and contact sensors. Space-efficient and finite automata-based combinatorial filters are synthesized to solve the localization task by determining the robot’s pose (position and orientation) in its environment. Second, we propose a solution for navigation and coverage tasks using single or multiple bouncing robots. The proposed solution finds a navigation plan for a single bouncing robot from the robot’s initial pose to its goal pose with limited sensing. Probabilistic paths from several policies of the robot are combined artfully so that the actual coverage distribution can become as close as possible to a target coverage distribution. A joint trajectory for multiple bouncing robots to visit all the locations of an environment is incrementally generated. Third, a scalable method is proposed to find stochastic strategies for multi-robot patrolling under an adversarial and communication-constrained environment. Then, we evaluate the vulnerability of our patrolling policies by finding the probability of capturing an adversary for a location in our proposed patrolling scenarios. Finally, a data-driven deployment and planning approach is presented for the underactuated aquatic robots called drifters that creates the generalized flow pattern of the water, develops a Markov-chain based motion model, and studies the long- term behavior of a marine environment from a flow point-of-view. In a broad summary, our dynamical system approach is a unique solution to typical robotic tasks and opens a new paradigm for the modeling of simple robotics system

    Monitoring using Heterogeneous Autonomous Agents.

    This dissertation studies problems involving different types of autonomous agents observing objects of interests in an area. Three types of agents are considered: mobile agents, stationary agents, and marsupial agents, i.e., agents capable of deploying other agents or being deployed themselves. Objects can be mobile or stationary. The problem of a mobile agent without fuel constraints revisiting stationary objects is formulated. Visits to objects are dictated by revisit deadlines, i.e., the maximum time that can elapse between two visits to the same object. The problem is shown to be NP-complete and heuristics are provided to generate paths for the agent. Almost periodic paths are proven to exist. The efficacy of the heuristics is shown through simulation. A variant of the problem where the agent has a finite fuel capacity and purchases fuel is treated. Almost periodic solutions to this problem are also shown to exist and an algorithm to compute the minimal cost path is provided. A problem where mobile and stationary agents cooperate to track a mobile object is formulated, shown to be NP-hard, and a heuristic is given to compute paths for the mobile agents. Optimal configurations for the stationary agents are then studied. Several methods are provided to optimally place the stationary agents; these methods are the maximization of Fisher information, the minimization of the probability of misclassification, and the minimization of the penalty incurred by the placement. A method to compute optimal revisit deadlines for the stationary agents is given. The placement methods are compared and their effectiveness shown using numerical results. The problem of two marsupial agents, one carrier and one passenger, performing a general monitoring task using a constrained optimization formulation is stated. Necessary conditions for optimal paths are provided for cases accounting for constrained release of the passenger, termination conditions for the task, as well as retrieval and constrained retrieval of the passenger. A problem involving two marsupial agents collecting information about a stationary object while avoiding detection is then formulated.     A Multi-Vehicle Cooperative Localization Approach for an Autonomy Framework

    Offensive techniques produced by technological advancement present opportunities for adversaries to threaten the operational advantages of our joint and allied forces. Combating these new methodologies requires continuous and rapid development towards our own set of \game-changing technologies. Through focused development of unmanned systems and autonomy, the Air Force can strive to maintain its technological superiority. Furthermore, creating a robust framework capable of testing and evaluating the principles that define autonomy allows for the exploration of future capabilities. This research presents development towards a hybrid reactive/deliberative architecture that will allow for the testing of the principles of task, cognitive, and peer flexibility. Specifically, this work explores peer flexibility in multi-robot systems to solve a localization problem using the Hybrid Architecture for Multiple Robots (HAMR) as a basis for the framework. To achieve this task a combination of vehicle perception and navigation tools formulate inferences on an operating environment. These inferences are then used for the construction of Factor Graphs upon which the core algorithm for localization implements iSAM2, a high performing incremental matrix factorization method. A key component for individual vehicle control within the framework is the Unified Behavior Framework (UBF), a behavior-based control architecture which uses modular arbitration techniques to generate actions that enable actuator control. Additionally, compartmentalization of a World Model is explored through the use of containers to minimize communication overhead and streamline state information.     Wide-Area Surveillance System using a UAV Helicopter Interceptor and Sensor Placement Planning Techniques

    This project proposes and describes the implementation of a wide-area surveillance system comprised of a sensor/interceptor placement planning and an interceptor unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) helicopter. Given the 2-D layout of an area, the planning system optimally places perimeter cameras based on maximum coverage and minimal cost. Part of this planning system includes the MATLAB implementation of Erdem and Sclaroff’s Radial Sweep algorithm for visibility polygon generation. Additionally, 2-D camera modeling is proposed for both fixed and PTZ cases. Finally, the interceptor is also placed to minimize shortest-path flight time to any point on the perimeter during a detection event. Secondly, a basic flight control system for the UAV helicopter is designed and implemented. The flight control system’s primary goal is to hover the helicopter in place when a human operator holds an automatic-flight switch. This system represents the first step in a complete waypoint-navigation flight control system. The flight control system is based on an inertial measurement unit (IMU) and a proportional-integral-derivative (PID) controller. This system is implemented using a general-purpose personal computer (GPPC) running Windows XP and other commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) hardware. This setup differs from other helicopter control systems which typically use custom embedded solutions or micro-controllers. Experiments demonstrate the sensor placement planning achieving \u3e90% coverage at optimized-cost for several typical areas given multiple camera types and parameters. Furthermore, the helicopter flight control system experiments achieve hovering success over short flight periods. However, the final conclusion is that the COTS IMU is insufficient for high-speed, high-frequency applications such as a helicopter control system

    CoverNav: Cover Following Navigation Planning in Unstructured Outdoor Environment with Deep Reinforcement Learning

    Autonomous navigation in offroad environments has been extensively studied in the robotics field. However, navigation in covert situations where an autonomous vehicle needs to remain hidden from outside observers remains an underexplored area. In this paper, we propose a novel Deep Reinforcement Learning (DRL) based algorithm, called CoverNav, for identifying covert and navigable trajectories with minimal cost in offroad terrains and jungle environments in the presence of observers. CoverNav focuses on unmanned ground vehicles seeking shelters and taking covers while safely navigating to a predefined destination. Our proposed DRL method computes a local cost map that helps distinguish which path will grant the maximal covertness while maintaining a low cost trajectory using an elevation map generated from 3D point cloud data, the robot's pose, and directed goal information. CoverNav helps robot agents to learn the low elevation terrain using a reward function while penalizing it proportionately when it experiences high elevation. If an observer is spotted, CoverNav enables the robot to select natural obstacles (e.g., rocks, houses, disabled vehicles, trees, etc.) and use them as shelters to hide behind. We evaluate CoverNav using the Unity simulation environment and show that it guarantees dynamically feasible velocities in the terrain when fed with an elevation map generated by another DRL based navigation algorithm. Additionally, we evaluate CoverNav's effectiveness in achieving a maximum goal distance of 12 meters and its success rate in different elevation scenarios with and without cover objects. We observe competitive performance comparable to state of the art (SOTA) methods without compromising accuracy

    MODELING OF INNOVATIVE LIGHTER-THAN-AIR UAV FOR LOGISTICS, SURVEILLANCE AND RESCUE OPERATIONS

    An unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) is an aircraft that can operate without the presence of pilots, either through remote control or automated systems. The first part of the dissertation provides an overview of the various types of UAVs and their design features. The second section delves into specific experiences using UAVs as part of an automated monitoring system to identify potential problems such as pipeline leaks or equipment damage by conducting airborne surveys.Lighter-than-air UAVs, such as airships, can be used for various applications, from aerial photography, including surveying terrain, monitoring an area for security purposes and gathering information about weather patterns to surveillance. The third part reveals the applications of UAVs for assisting in search and rescue operations in disaster situations and transporting natural gas. Using PowerSim software, a model of airship behaviour was created to analyze the sprint-and-drift concept and study methods of increasing the operational time of airships while having a lower environmental impact when compared to a constantly switched-on engine. The analysis provided a reliable percentage of finding the victim during patrolling operations, although it did not account for victim behaviour. The study has also shown that airships may serve as a viable alternative to pipeline transportation for natural gas. The technology has the potential to revolutionize natural gas transportation, optimizing efficiency and reducing environmental impact. Additionally, airships have a unique advantage in accessing remote and otherwise inaccessible areas, providing significant benefits in the energy sector. The employment of this technology was studied to be effective in specific scenarios, and it will be worth continuing to study it for a positive impact on society and the environment

    On the role and opportunities in teamwork design for advanced multi-robot search systems

    Intelligent robotic systems are becoming ever more present in our lives across a multitude of domains such as industry, transportation, agriculture, security, healthcare and even education. Such systems enable humans to focus on the interesting and sophisticated tasks while robots accomplish tasks that are either too tedious, routine or potentially dangerous for humans to do. Recent advances in perception technologies and accompanying hardware, mainly attributed to rapid advancements in the deep-learning ecosystem, enable the deployment of robotic systems equipped with onboard sensors as well as the computational power to perform autonomous reasoning and decision making online. While there has been significant progress in expanding the capabilities of single and multi-robot systems during the last decades across a multitude of domains and applications, there are still many promising areas for research that can advance the state of cooperative searching systems that employ multiple robots. In this article, several prospective avenues of research in teamwork cooperation with considerable potential for advancement of multi-robot search systems will be visited and discussed. In previous works we have shown that multi-agent search tasks can greatly benefit from intelligent cooperation between team members and can achieve performance close to the theoretical optimum. The techniques applied can be used in a variety of domains including planning against adversarial opponents, control of forest fires and coordinating search-and-rescue missions. The state-of-the-art on methods of multi-robot search across several selected domains of application is explained, highlighting the pros and cons of each method, providing an up-to-date view on the current state of the domains and their future challenges

    Coordination of Cooperative Multi-Robot Teams

    This thesis is about cooperation of multiple robots that have a common task they should fulfill, i.e., how multi-robot systems behave in cooperative scenarios. Cooperation is a very important aspect in robotics, because multiple robots can solve a task more quickly or efficiently in many situations. Specific points of interest are, how the effectiveness of the group of robots completing a task can be improved and how the amount of communication and computational requirements can be reduced. The importance of this topic lies in applications like search and rescue scenarios, where time can be a critical factor and a certain robustness and reliability are required. Further the communication can be limited by various factors and operating (multiple) robots can be a highly complicated task. A typical search and rescue mission as considered in this thesis begins with the deployment of the robot team in an unknown or partly known environment. The team can be heterogeneous in the sense that it consists of pairs of air and ground robots that assist each other. The air vehicle – abbreviated as UAV – stays within vision range of the ground vehicle or UGV. Therefrom, it provides sensing information with a camera or similar sensor that might not be available to the UGV due to distance, perspective or occlusion. A new approach to fully use the available movement range is presented and analyzed theoretically and in simulations. The UAV moves according to a dynamic coverage algorithm which is combined with a tracking controller to guarantee the visibility limitation is kept. Since the environment is at least partly unknown, an exploration method is necessary to gather information about the situation and possible targets or areas of interest. Exploring the unknown regions in a short amount of time is solved by approaching points on the frontier between known and unknown territory. To this end, a basic approach for single robot exploration that uses the traveling salesman problem is extended to multirobot exploration. The coordination, which is a central aspect of the cooperative exploration process, is realized with a pairwise optimization procedure. This new algorithm uses minimum spanning trees for cost estimation and is inspired by one of the many multi-robot coordination methods from the related literature. Again, theoretical and simulated as well as statistical analysis are used as methods to evaluate the approach. After the exploration is complete, a map of the environment with possible regions of higher importance is known by the robot team. To stay useful and ready for any further events, the robots now switch to a monitoring state where they spread out to cover the area in an optimal manner. The optimality is measured with a criterion that can be derived into a distributed control law. This leads to splitting of the robots into areas of Voronoi cells where each robot has a maximum distance to other robots and can sense any events within its assigned cell. A new variant of these Voronoi cells is introduced. They are limited by visibility and depend on a delta-contraction of the environment, which leads to automatic collision avoidance. The combination of these two aspects leads to a coverage control algorithm that works in nonconvex environments and has advantageous properties compared to related work

    Algorithms for multi-robot systems on the cooperative exploration & last-mile delivery problems

    La aparición de los vehículos aéreos no tripulados (UAVs) y de los vehículos terrestres no tripulados (UGVs) ha llevado a la comunidad científica a enfrentarse a problemas ideando paradigmas de cooperación con UGVs y UAVs. Sin embargo, no suele ser trivial determinar si la cooperación entre UGVs y UAVs es adecuada para un determinado problema. Por esta razón, en esta tesis, investigamos un paradigma particular de cooperación UGV-UAV en dos problemas de la literatura, y proponemos un controlador autónomo para probarlo en escenarios simulados. Primero, formulamos un problema particular de exploración cooperativa que consiste en alcanzar un conjunto de puntos de destino en un área de exploración a gran escala. Este problema define al UGV como una estación de carga móvil para transportar el UAV a través de diferentes lugares desde donde el UAV puede alcanzar los puntos de destino. Por consiguiente, proponemos el algoritmo TERRA para resolverlo. Este algoritmo se destaca por dividir el problema de exploración en cinco subproblemas, en los que cada subproblema se resuelve en una etapa particular del algoritmo. Debido a la explosión de la entrega de paquetes en las empresas de comercio electrónico, formulamos también una generalización del conocido problema de la entrega en la última milla. En este caso, el UGV actúa como una estación de carga móvil que transporta a los paquetes y a los UAVs, y estos se encargan de entregarlos. De esta manera, seguimos la estrategia de división descrita por TERRA, y proponemos el algoritmo COURIER. Este algoritmo replica las cuatro primeras etapas de TERRA, pero construye una nueva quinta etapa para producir un plan de tareas que resuelva el problema. Para evaluar el paradigma de cooperación UGV-UAV en escenarios simulados, proponemos el controlador autónomo ARIES. Este controlador sigue un enfoque jerárquico descentralizado de líder-seguidor para integrar cualquier paradigma de cooperación de manera distribuida. Ambos algoritmos han sido caracterizados para identificar los aspectos relevantes del paradigma de cooperación en los problemas relacionados. Además, ambos demuestran un gran rendimiento del paradigma de cooperación en tales problemas, y al igual que el controlador autónomo, revelan un gran potencial para futuras aplicaciones reales.The emergence of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) and Unmanned Ground Vehicles (UGVs) has conducted the research community to face historical complex problems by devising UGV-UAV cooperation paradigms. However, it is usually not a trivial task to determine whether or not a UGV-UAV cooperation is suitable for a particular problem. For this reason, in this thesis, we investigate a particular UGV-UAV cooperation paradigm over two problems in the literature, and we propose an autonomous controller to test it on simulated scenarios. Driven by the planetary exploration, we formulate a particular cooperative exploration problem consisting of reaching a set of target points in a large-scale exploration area. This problem defines the UGV as a moving charging station to carry the UAV through different locations from where the UAV can reach the target points. Consequently, we propose the cooperaTive ExploRation Routing Algorithm (TERRA) to solve it. This algorithm stands out for splitting up the exploration problem into five sub-problems, in which each sub-problem is solved in a particular stage of the algorithm. In the same way, driven by the explosion of parcels delivery in e-commerce companies, we formulate a generalization of the well-known last-mile delivery problem. This generalization defines the same UGV’s and UAV’s rol as the exploration problem. That is, the UGV acts as a moving charging station which carries the parcels along several UAVs to deliver them. In this way, we follow the split strategy depicted by TERRA to propose the COoperative Unmanned deliveRIEs planning algoRithm (COURIER). This algorithm replicates the first four TERRA’s stages, but it builds a new fifth stage to produce a task plan solving the problem. In order to evaluate the UGV-UAV cooperation paradigm on simulated scenarios, we propose the Autonomous coopeRatIve Execution System (ARIES). This controller follows a hierarchical decentralized leader-follower approach to integrate any cooperation paradigm in a distributed manner. Both algorithms have been characterized to identify the relevant aspects of the cooperation paradigm in the related problems. Also, both of them demonstrate a great performance of the cooperation paradigm in such problems, and as well as the autonomous controller, reveal a great potential for future real applications
