Cuckoo Search Inspired Hybridization of the Nelder-Mead Simplex Algorithm Applied to Optimization of Photovoltaic Cells
A new hybridization of the Cuckoo Search (CS) is developed and applied to
optimize multi-cell solar systems; namely multi-junction and split spectrum
cells. The new approach consists of combining the CS with the Nelder-Mead
method. More precisely, instead of using single solutions as nests for the CS,
we use the concept of a simplex which is used in the Nelder-Mead algorithm.
This makes it possible to use the flip operation introduces in the Nelder-Mead
algorithm instead of the Levy flight which is a standard part of the CS. In
this way, the hybridized algorithm becomes more robust and less sensitive to
parameter tuning which exists in CS. The goal of our work was to optimize the
performance of multi-cell solar systems. Although the underlying problem
consists of the minimization of a function of a relatively small number of
parameters, the difficulty comes from the fact that the evaluation of the
function is complex and only a small number of evaluations is possible. In our
test, we show that the new method has a better performance when compared to
similar but more compex hybridizations of Nelder-Mead algorithm using genetic
algorithms or particle swarm optimization on standard benchmark functions.
Finally, we show that the new method outperforms some standard meta-heuristics
for the problem of interest
A novel improved elephant herding optimization for path planning of a mobile robot
Swarm intelligence algorithms have been in recent years one of the most used tools for planning the trajectory of a mobile robot. Researchers are applying those algorithms to find the optimal path, which reduces the time required to perform a task by the mobile robot. In this paper, we propose a new method based on the grey wolf optimizer algorithm (GWO) and the improved elephant herding optimization algorithm (IEHO) for planning the optimal trajectory of a mobile robot. The proposed solution consists of developing an IEHO algorithm by improving the basic EHO algorithm and then hybridizing it with the GWO algorithm to take advantage of the exploration and exploitation capabilities of both algorithms. The comparison of the IEHO-GWO hybrid proposed in this work with the GWO, EHO, and cuckoo-search (CS) algorithms via simulation shows its effectiveness in finding an optimal trajectory by avoiding obstacles around the mobile robot
A Literature Review of Cuckoo Search Algorithm
Optimization techniques play key role in real world problems. In many situations where decisions are taken based on random search they are used. But choosing optimal Optimization algorithm is a major challenge to the user. This paper presents a review on Cuckoo Search Algorithm which can replace many traditionally used techniques. Cuckoo search uses Levi flight strategy based on Egg laying Radius in deriving the solution specific to problem. CS optimization algorithm increases the efficiency, accuracy, and convergence rate. Different categories of the cuckoo search and several applications of the cuckoo search are reviewed. Obstacle Avoidance Scheme Based Elite Opposition Bat Algorithm for Unmanned Ground Vehicles
Unmanned Ground Vehicles (UGVs) are intelligent vehicles that operate in an obstacle environment without an onboard human operator but can be controlled autonomously using an obstacle avoidance system or by a human operator from a remote location. In this research, an obstacle avoidance scheme-based elite opposition bat algorithm (EOBA) for UGVs was developed. The obstacle avoidance system comprises a simulation map, a perception system for obstacle detection, and the implementation of EOBA for generating an optimal collision-free path that led the UGV to the goal location. Three distance thresholds of 0.1 m, 0.2 m, and 0.3 m was used in the obstacle detection stage to determine the optimal distance threshold for obstacle avoidance. The performance of the obstacle avoidance scheme was compared with that of bat algorithm (BA) and particle swarm optimization (PSO) techniques. The simulation results show that the distance threshold of 0.3 m is the optimal threshold for obstacle avoidance provided that the size of the obstacle does not exceed the size of the UGV. The EOBA based scheme when compared with BA and PSO schemes obtained an average percentage reduction of 21.82% in terms of path length and 60% in terms of time taken to reach the target destination. The uniqueness of this approach is that the UGV avoid collision with an obstacle at a distance of 0.3 m from nearby obstacles as against taking three steps backward before avoiding obstacl
