    Interpreting Wage Bargaining Norms

    From the mid-1990s onwards, Swedish wage bargaining has been characterised by informal co-ordination of the wage claims of big unions and bargaining cartels. In particular, it has been understood that the manufacturing sector should lead by first agreeing on a pay increase, whereafter the service sector and public sector unions choose a similar increase. We analyse his setup with two possible theoretical interpretations: (i) the manufacturing sector as a tackelberg leader and (ii) a normative role for the manufacturing sector’s pay increase, upported either by unmodelled social pressure or a modeled loss aversion (envy) of the heltered sector unions. The conclusion of the analysis is that the normative or leading role of one sector – in the Swedish case the manufacturing sector – can potentially bring big benefits for employment and output. Generalising an idea suggested by Lars Calmfors and Anna Larsson, our analysis also generates a rudimentary theory of why the wage increase norm sometimes binds and sometimes not. A comparison of the model predictions and the observed outcomes of the last five wage bargaining rounds in Sweden suggests that the model is generally consistent with the empirical observations: wage moderation and norm observance are stronger when the manufacturing industry’s initial relative wage is low.wage bargaining; bargaining co-ordination

    Opinion Dynamics in Two-Step Process: Message Sources, Opinion Leaders and Normal Agents

    According to mass media theory, the dissemination of messages and the evolution of opinions in social networks follow a two-step process. First, opinion leaders receive the message from the message sources, and then they transmit their opinions to normal agents. However, most opinion models only consider the evolution of opinions within a single network, which fails to capture the two-step process accurately. To address this limitation, we propose a unified framework called the Two-Step Model, which analyzes the communication process among message sources, opinion leaders, and normal agents. In this study, we examine the steady-state opinions and stability of the Two-Step Model. Our findings reveal that several factors, such as message distribution, initial opinion, level of stubbornness, and preference coefficient, influence the sample mean and variance of steady-state opinions. Notably, normal agents' opinions tend to be influenced by opinion leaders in the two-step process. We also conduct numerical and social experiments to validate the accuracy of the Two-Step Model, which outperforms other models on average. Our results provide valuable insights into the factors that shape social opinions and can guide the development of effective strategies for opinion guidance in social networks

    Bipartite Consensus for a Class of Nonlinear Multi-agent Systems Under Switching Topologies:A Disturbance Observer-Based Approach

    This paper considers the leader-following bipartite consensus for a class of nonlinear multi-agent systems (MASs) subject to exogenous disturbances under directed fixed and switching topologies, respectively. Firstly, two new output feedback control protocols involving signs of link weights are introduced based on relative output measurements of neighboring agents. In order to estimate the disturbances produced by an exogenous system, a disturbance observer-based approach is developed. Then, sufficient conditions for leader-following bipartite consensus with directed fixed topologies are derived. Furthermore, by assuming that each switching topology contains a directed spanning tree, it is proved that the leader-following bipartite consensus can be realized with the designed output feedback control protocol if the dwell time is larger than a non-negative threshold. Finally, numerical simulations inspired by a real-world DC motors are provided to illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed controllers
