Digital Aperture Photometry Utilizing Growth Curves
Point source extraction is critical to proper analysis of images containing point sources obtained by focal plane array cameras. Two popular methods of extracting the intensity of a point source are aperture photometry and point spread function fitting. Digital aperture photometry encompasses procedures utilized to extract the intensity of an imaged point source. It has been used by astronomers in various forms for calculating stellar brightness. It is also useful for doing analysis of data associated with other unresolved radiating objects. The various aperture photometry methods include the two-aperture method, aperture correction, and growth curve method.
The growth curve method utilizes integrated irradiance within an aperture versus growing aperture size. Signal to noise ratio, imperfect backgrounds, moving and off centered targets, and noise structure are just a few of the items that can cause problems with point source extraction. This thesis presents a study of how best to apply the growth curve method.
Multiple synthetic image sets were produced to replicate real world data. The synthetic images contain a Gaussian target of known intensity. Noise was added to the images, and various image related parameters were altered. The growth curve method is then applied to each data set using every reasonable aperture size combination to calculate the target intensity. It will be shown that for different types of data, the most optimal application of the growth curve method can be determined. An algorithm is presented that can be applied to all data sets that fall within the scope of this study will be presented
An Electro - Optical Test System for Optimising Operating Conditions of CCD sensors for LSST
We describe the commissioning of a system which has been built to investigate
optimal operation of CCDs for the LSST telescope. The test system is designed
for low vibration, high stability operation and is capable of illuminating a
detector in flat-field, projected spot, projected pattern and Fe-55
configurations. We compare and describe some considerations when choosing a
gain calibration method for CCDs which exhibit the brighter-fatter effect. An
optimisation study on a prototype device of gain and full well with varying
back substrate bias and gate clock levels is presented
An Automated Algorithm for Approximation of Temporal Video Data Using Linear B'EZIER Fitting
This paper presents an efficient method for approximation of temporal video
data using linear Bezier fitting. For a given sequence of frames, the proposed
method estimates the intensity variations of each pixel in temporal dimension
using linear Bezier fitting in Euclidean space. Fitting of each segment ensures
upper bound of specified mean squared error. Break and fit criteria is employed
to minimize the number of segments required to fit the data. The proposed
method is well suitable for lossy compression of temporal video data and
automates the fitting process of each pixel. Experimental results show that the
proposed method yields good results both in terms of objective and subjective
quality measurement parameters without causing any blocking artifacts.Comment: 14 Pages, IJMA 201

Toward improved calibration of hydrologic models: Combining the strengths of manual and automatic methods
Automatic methods for model calibration seek to take advantage of the speed and power of digital computers, while being objective and relatively easy to implement. However, they do not provide parameter estimates and hydrograph simulations that are considered acceptable by the hydrologists responsible for operational forecasting and have therefore not entered into widespread use. In contrast, the manual approach which has been developed and refined over the years to result in excellent model calibrations is complicated and highly labor-intensive, and the expertise acquired by one individual with a specific model is not easily transferred to another person (or model). In this paper, we propose a hybrid approach that combines the strengths of each. A multicriteria formulation is used to "model" the evaluation techniques and strategies used in manual calibration, and the resulting optimization problem is solved by means of a computerized algorithm. The new approach provides a stronger test of model performance than methods that use a single overall statistic to aggregate model errors over a large range of hydrologic behaviors. The power of the new approach is illustrated by means of a case study using the Sacramento Soil Moisture Accounting model
The shape and erosion of pebbles
The shapes of flat pebbles may be characterized in terms of the statistical
distribution of curvatures measured along their contours. We illustrate this
new method for clay pebbles eroded in a controlled laboratory apparatus, and
also for naturally-occurring rip-up clasts formed and eroded in the Mont
St.-Michel bay. We find that the curvature distribution allows finer
discrimination than traditional measures of aspect ratios. Furthermore, it
connects to the microscopic action of erosion processes that are typically
faster at protruding regions of high curvature. We discuss in detail how the
curvature may be reliable deduced from digital photographs.Comment: 10 pages, 11 figure
Infrared imaging spectroscopy of skin cancer lesions
Skin cancer is a disease of the twenty-first century since, unfortunately, being tan is associated to be healthy and good looking. UV radiation produces one of the most aggressive kinds of skin cancer: melanoma; once the damage is done there is no other solution that a rapid and effective diagnosis. Clinical examination and biopsies have shown to be slow and costly in many ways, so the possibility of getting a non-invasive optical detection of skin melanomas became a hot topic in biophotonics. In this context, multispectral imaging systems have approached the problem, but none of them worked inside the infrared range. Hence, this work has been proposed as an interesting, long-term project to further investigate about the possibilities of infrared imaging spectroscopy for the early detection of skin cancer through the development of such a system based on an InGaAs camera
