Recent Progress in Image Deblurring
This paper comprehensively reviews the recent development of image
deblurring, including non-blind/blind, spatially invariant/variant deblurring
techniques. Indeed, these techniques share the same objective of inferring a
latent sharp image from one or several corresponding blurry images, while the
blind deblurring techniques are also required to derive an accurate blur
kernel. Considering the critical role of image restoration in modern imaging
systems to provide high-quality images under complex environments such as
motion, undesirable lighting conditions, and imperfect system components, image
deblurring has attracted growing attention in recent years. From the viewpoint
of how to handle the ill-posedness which is a crucial issue in deblurring
tasks, existing methods can be grouped into five categories: Bayesian inference
framework, variational methods, sparse representation-based methods,
homography-based modeling, and region-based methods. In spite of achieving a
certain level of development, image deblurring, especially the blind case, is
limited in its success by complex application conditions which make the blur
kernel hard to obtain and be spatially variant. We provide a holistic
understanding and deep insight into image deblurring in this review. An
analysis of the empirical evidence for representative methods, practical
issues, as well as a discussion of promising future directions are also

A closed-form solution to estimate uncertainty in non-rigid structure from motion
Semi-Definite Programming (SDP) with low-rank prior has been widely applied
in Non-Rigid Structure from Motion (NRSfM). Based on a low-rank constraint, it
avoids the inherent ambiguity of basis number selection in conventional
base-shape or base-trajectory methods. Despite the efficiency in deformable
shape reconstruction, it remains unclear how to assess the uncertainty of the
recovered shape from the SDP process. In this paper, we present a statistical
inference on the element-wise uncertainty quantification of the estimated
deforming 3D shape points in the case of the exact low-rank SDP problem. A
closed-form uncertainty quantification method is proposed and tested. Moreover,
we extend the exact low-rank uncertainty quantification to the approximate
low-rank scenario with a numerical optimal rank selection method, which enables
solving practical application in SDP based NRSfM scenario. The proposed method
provides an independent module to the SDP method and only requires the
statistic information of the input 2D tracked points. Extensive experiments
prove that the output 3D points have identical normal distribution to the 2D
trackings, the proposed method and quantify the uncertainty accurately, and
supports that it has desirable effects on routinely SDP low-rank based NRSfM

Belief Tree Search for Active Object Recognition
Active Object Recognition (AOR) has been approached as an unsupervised
learning problem, in which optimal trajectories for object inspection are not
known and are to be discovered by reducing label uncertainty measures or
training with reinforcement learning. Such approaches have no guarantees of the
quality of their solution. In this paper, we treat AOR as a Partially
Observable Markov Decision Process (POMDP) and find near-optimal policies on
training data using Belief Tree Search (BTS) on the corresponding belief Markov
Decision Process (MDP). AOR then reduces to the problem of knowledge transfer
from near-optimal policies on training set to the test set. We train a Long
Short Term Memory (LSTM) network to predict the best next action on the
training set rollouts. We sho that the proposed AOR method generalizes well to
novel views of familiar objects and also to novel objects. We compare this
supervised scheme against guided policy search, and find that the LSTM network
reaches higher recognition accuracy compared to the guided policy method. We
further look into optimizing the observation function to increase the total
collected reward of optimal policy. In AOR, the observation function is known
only approximately. We propose a gradient-based method update to this
approximate observation function to increase the total reward of any policy. We
show that by optimizing the observation function and retraining the supervised
LSTM network, the AOR performance on the test set improves significantly.Comment: IROS 201
Robust automatic target tracking based on a Bayesian ego-motion compensation framework for airborne FLIR imagery
Automatic target tracking in airborne FLIR imagery is currently a challenge due to the camera ego-motion. This phenomenon distorts the spatio-temporal correlation of the video sequence, which dramatically reduces the tracking performance. Several works address this problem using ego-motion compensation strategies. They use a deterministic approach to compensate the camera motion assuming a specific model of geometric transformation. However, in real sequences a specific geometric transformation can not accurately describe the camera ego-motion for the whole sequence, and as consequence of this, the performance of the tracking stage can significantly decrease, even completely fail. The optimum transformation for each pair of consecutive frames depends on the relative depth of the elements that compose the scene, and their degree of texturization. In this work, a novel Particle Filter framework is proposed to efficiently manage several hypothesis of geometric transformations: Euclidean, affine, and projective. Each type of transformation is used to compute candidate locations of the object in the current frame. Then, each candidate is evaluated by the measurement model of the Particle Filter using the appearance information. This approach is able to adapt to different camera ego-motion conditions, and thus to satisfactorily perform the tracking. The proposed strategy has been tested on the AMCOM FLIR dataset, showing a high efficiency in the tracking of different types of targets in real working conditions
