    Robust Stability of Quantum Systems with Nonlinear Dynamic Uncertainties

    This paper considers the problem of robust stability for a class of uncertain nonlinear quantum systems subject to unknown perturbations in the system Hamiltonian. The nominal system is a linear quantum system defined by a linear vector of coupling operators and a quadratic Hamiltonian. This paper extends previous results on the robust stability of nonlinear quantum systems to allow for quantum systems with dynamic uncertainties. These dynamic uncertainties are required to satisfy a certain quantum stochastic integral quadratic constraint. The robust stability condition is given in terms of a strict bounded real condition.     Network Synthesis of Linear Dynamical Quantum Stochastic Systems

    The purpose of this paper is to develop a synthesis theory for linear dynamical quantum stochastic systems that are encountered in linear quantum optics and in phenomenological models of linear quantum circuits. In particular, such a theory will enable the systematic realization of coherent/fully quantum linear stochastic controllers for quantum control, amongst other potential applications. We show how general linear dynamical quantum stochastic systems can be constructed by assembling an appropriate interconnection of one degree of freedom open quantum harmonic oscillators and, in the quantum optics setting, discuss how such a network of oscillators can be approximately synthesized or implemented in a systematic way from some linear and non-linear quantum optical elements.     Experimental Demonstration of Frequency Autolocking an Optical Cavity Using a Time-Varying Kalman Filter

    We propose and demonstrate a new autolocking scheme using a three-mirror ring cavity consisting of a linear quadratic regulator and a time-varying Kalman filter. Our technique does not require a frequency scan to acquire resonance. We utilize the singular perturbation method to simplify our system dynamics and to permit the application of linear control techniques. The error signal combined with the transmitted power is used to estimate the cavity detuning. This estimate is used by a linear time-varying Kalman filter which enables the implementation of an optimal controller. The experimental results validate the controller design, and we demonstrate improved robustness to disturbances and a faster locking time than a traditional proportional-integral controller. More important, the time-varying Kalman filtering approach automatically reacquires lock for large detunings, where the error signal leaves its linear capture range, a feat which linear time-invariant controllers cannot achieve. © 2016 American Physical Society

    Robust Control Design for Laser Cavity Squeezing in Quantum Optical Systems

    Quantum control theory is a rapidly evolving research field, which has developed over the last three decades. Quantum optics has practical importance in quantum technology and provides a promising means of implementing quantum information and computing device. In quantum control, it is difficult to acquire information about quantum states without destroying them since microscopic quantum systems have many unique characteristics such as entanglement and coherence which do not occur in classical mechanical system. Therefore, the Lyapunov-based control methodology is used to first construct an artificial closed-loop controller and then an open-loop law is derived by simulation of the artificial closed-loop system. This work considers the stabilization of laser cavity as the main integral part of quantum optical systems through squeezing the output beam of the cavity. As a comprehensive example of this type of system, quantum optomechanical sensors are investigated. To this end, a nonlinear model of quantum optomechanical sensors is first extended incorporating various noises. Then, linear quadratic Gaussian (LQG) control method is used to tackle the problem of mode-squeezing in optomechanical sensors. Coherent feedback quantum control is synthesized by incorporating both shot noise and back-action noise to attenuate the output noise well below the shot noise level (Two waves are said to be coherent if they have a constant relative phase). In the second phase of this work, due to entanglement of the system with critical uncertainties and technical limitations such as laser noise and detector imprecision, robust H [infinity] method is employed for the robust stabilization and robust performance of the system in practice. In H [infinity] methods, a control designer expresses the control problem as a mathematical optimization problem and then finds the controller that solves this.
