    Priority Auctions and Queue Disciplines that Depend on Processing Time

    Lecture on the first SFB/TR 15 meeting, Gummersbach, July, 18 - 20, 2004We analyze the allocation of priority in queues via simple bidding mechanisms. In our model, the stochastically arriving customers are privately informed about their own processing time. They make bids upon arrival at a queue whose length is unobservable. We consider two bidding schemes that differ in the definition of bids (these may reflect either total payments or payments per unit of time) and in the timing of payments (before, or after service). In both schemes, a customer obtains priority over all customers (waiting in the queue or arriving while he is waiting) who make lower bids. Our main results show how the convexity/concavity of the function expressing the costs of delay determines the queue-discipline (i.e., SPT, LPT) arising in a bidding equilibrium

    The problem of multi-task attention allocation with special reference to aircraft piloting is discussed with the experimental paradigm used to characterize this situation and the experimental results obtained in the first phase of the research. A qualitative description of an approach to mathematical modeling, and some results obtained with it are also presented to indicate what aspects of the model are most promising. Two appendices are given which (1) discuss the model in relation to graph theory and optimization and (2) specify the optimization algorithm of the model

    Pilot interaction with automated airborne decision making systems

    An investigation was made of interaction between a human pilot and automated on-board decision making systems. Research was initiated on the topic of pilot problem solving in automated and semi-automated flight management systems and attempts were made to develop a model of human decision making in a multi-task situation. A study was made of allocation of responsibility between human and computer, and discussed were various pilot performance parameters with varying degrees of automation. Optimal allocation of responsibility between human and computer was considered and some theoretical results found in the literature were presented. The pilot as a problem solver was discussed. Finally the design of displays, controls, procedures, and computer aids for problem solving tasks in automated and semi-automated systems was considered

    This article discusses issues related to the location and allocation problems where is intended to demonstrate, through the random number generation, the influence of congestion of such systems in the final solutions. It is presented an algorithm that, in addition to the GRASP, incorporates the Regret with the pminmax method to evaluate the heuristic solution obtained in regard to its robustness for different scenarios. To the well know Maximum Coverage Location Problem from Church and Revelle [1] an alternative perspective is added in which the choice behavior of the server does not only depend on the elapsed time from the demand point looking to the center, but also includes the waiting time for service conditioned by a waiting queue.N/

    Adaptive resource optimization for edge inference with goal-oriented communications

    AbstractGoal-oriented communications represent an emerging paradigm for efficient and reliable learning at the wireless edge, where only the information relevant for the specific learning task is transmitted to perform inference and/or training. The aim of this paper is to introduce a novel system design and algorithmic framework to enable goal-oriented communications. Specifically, inspired by the information bottleneck principle and targeting an image classification task, we dynamically change the size of the data to be transmitted by exploiting banks of convolutional encoders at the device in order to extract meaningful and parsimonious data features in a totally adaptive and goal-oriented fashion. Exploiting knowledge of the system conditions, such as the channel state and the computation load, such features are dynamically transmitted to an edge server that takes the final decision, based on a proper convolutional classifier. Hinging on Lyapunov stochastic optimization, we devise a novel algorithmic framework that dynamically and jointly optimizes communication, computation, and the convolutional encoder classifier, in order to strike a desired trade-off between energy, latency, and accuracy of the edge learning task. Several simulation results illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed strategy for edge learning with goal-oriented communications
