Optimized Data Representation for Interactive Multiview Navigation
In contrary to traditional media streaming services where a unique media
content is delivered to different users, interactive multiview navigation
applications enable users to choose their own viewpoints and freely navigate in
a 3-D scene. The interactivity brings new challenges in addition to the
classical rate-distortion trade-off, which considers only the compression
performance and viewing quality. On the one hand, interactivity necessitates
sufficient viewpoints for richer navigation; on the other hand, it requires to
provide low bandwidth and delay costs for smooth navigation during view
transitions. In this paper, we formally describe the novel trade-offs posed by
the navigation interactivity and classical rate-distortion criterion. Based on
an original formulation, we look for the optimal design of the data
representation by introducing novel rate and distortion models and practical
solving algorithms. Experiments show that the proposed data representation
method outperforms the baseline solution by providing lower resource
consumptions and higher visual quality in all navigation configurations, which
certainly confirms the potential of the proposed data representation in
practical interactive navigation systems
Bound and Conquer: Improving Triangulation by Enforcing Consistency
We study the accuracy of triangulation in multi-camera systems with respect
to the number of cameras. We show that, under certain conditions, the optimal
achievable reconstruction error decays quadratically as more cameras are added
to the system. Furthermore, we analyse the error decay-rate of major
state-of-the-art algorithms with respect to the number of cameras. To this end,
we introduce the notion of consistency for triangulation, and show that
consistent reconstruction algorithms achieve the optimal quadratic decay, which
is asymptotically faster than some other methods. Finally, we present
simulations results supporting our findings. Our simulations have been
implemented in MATLAB and the resulting code is available in the supplementary

Feedforward data-aided phase noise estimation from a DCT basis expansion
This contribution deals with phase noise estimation from pilot symbols. The phase noise process is approximated by an expansion of discrete cosine transform (DCT) basis functions containing only a few terms. We propose a feedforward algorithm that estimates the DCT coefficients without requiring detailed knowledge about the phase noise statistics. We demonstrate that the resulting (linearized) mean-square phase estimation error consists of two contributions: a contribution from the additive noise, that equals the Cramer-Rao lower bound, and a noise independent contribution, that results front the phase noise modeling error. We investigate the effect of the symbol sequence length, the pilot symbol positions, the number of pilot symbols, and the number of estimated DCT coefficients it the estimation accuracy and on the corresponding bit error rate (PER). We propose a pilot symbol configuration allowing to estimate any number of DCT coefficients not exceeding the number of pilot Symbols, providing a considerable Performance improvement as compared to other pilot symbol configurations. For large block sizes, the DCT-based estimation algorithm substantially outperforms algorithms that estimate only the time-average or the linear trend of the carrier phase. Copyright (C) 2009 J.
