The rapid advances in computer and communications technologies are challenging the American education systems to provide increased educational opportunities beyond the traditional geographic boundaries at a reasonable cost. Many educational institutions are answering this challenge by developing distance education programs. Distance education provides effective learning environment. An important requirement for effective distance education is the availability of continuous interactivity and immediate feedback. Over the Internet, synchronous sharing of multimedia content introduces unacceptable delays as network bandwidth is limited. In this thesis, the issue of Internet bandwidth is minimized and a novel system is developed for distance education using multimedia course material over the Internet. The data rich multimedia materials reside at remote computers and are only remotely activated utilizing low bandwidth signals over the Internet. As a result, the large download times associated with multimedia files are eliminated creating an almost real time link between the remote locations

The careful planning and emergence of the Multimedia Super Corridor (MSC) in Malaysia has captivated regional and international attention. Its basic intention is meant to spearhead and heighten national interests towards the Information Technology (IT) sector, while addressing issues of a borderless nature. Thus, an important entity in the MSC is its Multimedia University (MMU), the showcase, higher-education establishment for multimedia education and research and development. The Faculty of Creative Multimedia (FCM) at MMU has grown tremendously since 1997, and it provides higher education opportunities in multimedia design. Its blend of course content, making up of pre-production, production and post-production multimedia training, includes both face-to-face and "class online" dissemination methods. As multimedia curriculum of this mixed nature is relatively new worldwide, FCM have so far been successful in providing both local and international multimedia industries its required knowledge workers, content developers and 'cyberpreneurs'. This paper will review the structure, assessment methods and learning pedagogies of the faculty in multimedia design and development, highlighting how a faculty that endeavours to keep up with the latest leading-edge technology and internet culture can provide a down-to-earth curriculum and level-headed content creators. The paper will also illustrate and discuss the faculty's research and development centres together with its collaborating industries, as support for course and staff development

Edutainment is a mixture of education and entertainment. In the software industry edutainment was very popular in the 80’s and the first part of the 90’s when the graphic capabilities of PC-s were very limited. The early computer games were based on textual information. From the second part of the 80’s low resolution pictures became a part of a computer game, but that was still quite far from the so called multimedia. As the CPUs and graphic cards became more powerful computer games started to develop rapidly. Nowadays the 3D, the virtual reality, the real time animation and the high quality sound are the essential parts of computer games. The computer games in edutainment are nearly totally disappeared. In the last some years the internet games turned to be more popular: the relatively low bandwidth and the lack of web multimedia standards gave new opportunities for the edutainment in this environment. Cartography can profit form this revival because maps are very popular content of the web

A FRAMEWORK FOR MAPPING MULTIMEDIA TO EDUCATIONAL CONCEPTS

Multimedia provides exciting opportunities to education as it allows educational material to be delivered in a multitude of ways, fine-tuned to enhance the learning experience. By using multimedia in e-learning systems, educational material can be presented in ways that both simplify and enhance learning. Increasingly, educational material developers are taking advantage of multimedia technology to deliver education but use multimedia in a variety of ways that are more based on intuition and personal experience and this often leads to the development of an ineffective learning material. Although there are not many main media prototypes (animation, images, video, text, audio), when examined at sub-prototype level, we find that there are many media types that can be used to present educational information. Given the number of available media sub-prototypes, the choice and mode of delivery of multimedia presents a problem in designing educational material. What media type or combination of types do we use for a given educational concept? What media combinations will improve learning for a particular educational concept? This paper presents a method for the selection of appropriate media for educational material and demonstrates how the method could be effectively used in the design of educational material, suitable for e-learning applications

Despite the importance of teacher educators in influencing the quality of teacher education and by extension, the teacher quality, teacher educator preparation and professional development has received little attention from researchers and its pedagogical knowledge domain is often generalized from that of teachers. This study therefore explored the knowledge development of prospective teacher educators through creating multimedia case studies of practice. The study was based on the analysis of data collected previously through a teacher development experiment with eighteen prospective teacher educators during a two-semester course for doctoral students in several teacher education programs. I adopted Cochran-Smith and Lytle\u27s theorizing about relationships of knowledge and practice that makes distinctions among three prominent conceptions of teacher learning - Knowledge-for-practice, knowledge-in-practice, and knowledge-of-practice – to describe essential knowledge for teacher educators. I used the constructivist grounded theory approach as a data analysis strategy to explore the participants\u27 experience in creating multimedia case studies to develop theories that were useful to understanding their knowledge development. The results revealed that through the creation of multimedia case studies of practice, the prospective teacher educators developed greater appreciation of the complexity of teaching and learning, appreciated the importance of reflection as a task of teaching and learning, got the opportunities to think in new ways about their own learning and developed better understanding of linking theory and practice. The pedagogical implications of these findings generally indicate that prospective teacher educators need professional development opportunities that would lead them to confront and break their previously held conceptions about teaching and learning while embracing research-based developments in education. Key words: prospective teacher educators, knowledge development, multimedia case studie

The article presents the issue of expediency of multimedia technologies implementation into the process of study of “Therapeutic Dentistry” and “Paediatric Therapeutic Dentistry” disciplines for training of foreign dental students with English and Russian language of tuition. The author analyses effectiveness of student’s learning of the units “Periodontal disease” and “Periodontal disease in children” presented in multimedia and traditional forms during the practical classes. The use of multimedia support ultimately improves perception and comprehension of learning material and positively affects cognitive activity of foreign students. The lecturer is time-limited during the practical classes and by means of multimedia support he can provide guidelines for students who are not always good enough in English and Russian and in subject matter. This makes classes more emotionally comfortable for the lecturer and students and increases students’ motivation and activity. It also opens new opportunities for educational process and self-education. Thus, proficient use of multimedia facilitates the communication of a lecturer and a student with English or Russian language of tuition and significantly extends and improves educational process.
