Knowledge Representation Concepts for Automated SLA Management
Outsourcing of complex IT infrastructure to IT service providers has
increased substantially during the past years. IT service providers must be
able to fulfil their service-quality commitments based upon predefined Service
Level Agreements (SLAs) with the service customer. They need to manage, execute
and maintain thousands of SLAs for different customers and different types of
services, which needs new levels of flexibility and automation not available
with the current technology. The complexity of contractual logic in SLAs
requires new forms of knowledge representation to automatically draw inferences
and execute contractual agreements. A logic-based approach provides several
advantages including automated rule chaining allowing for compact knowledge
representation as well as flexibility to adapt to rapidly changing business
requirements. We suggest adequate logical formalisms for representation and
enforcement of SLA rules and describe a proof-of-concept implementation. The
article describes selected formalisms of the ContractLog KR and their adequacy
for automated SLA management and presents results of experiments to demonstrate

An ontological approach for recovering legacy business content
Legacy Information Systems (LIS) pose a challenge for many organizations. On one hand, LIS are viewed as aging systems needing replacement; on the other hand, years of accumulated business knowledge have made these systems mission-critical. Current approaches however are often criticized for being overtly dependent on technology and ignoring the business knowledge which resides within LIS. In this light, this paper proposes a means of capturing the business knowledge in a technology agnostic manner and transforming it in a way that reaps the benefits of clear semantic expression - this transformation is achieved via the careful use of ontology. The approach called Content Sophistication (CS) aims to provide a model of the business that more closely adheres to the semantics and relationships of objects existing in the real world. The approach is illustrated via an example taken from a case study concerning the renovation of a large financial system and the outcome of the approach results in technology agnostic models that show improvements along several dimensions
Temporal Aspects of Smart Contracts for Financial Derivatives
Implementing smart contracts to automate the performance of high-value
over-the-counter (OTC) financial derivatives is a formidable challenge. Due to
the regulatory framework and the scale of financial risk if a contract were to
go wrong, the performance of these contracts must be enforceable in law and
there is an absolute requirement that the smart contract will be faithful to
the intentions of the parties as expressed in the original legal documentation.
Formal methods provide an attractive route for validation and assurance, and
here we present early results from an investigation of the semantics of
industry-standard legal documentation for OTC derivatives. We explain the need
for a formal representation that combines temporal, deontic and operational
aspects, and focus on the requirements for the temporal aspects as derived from
the legal text. The relevance of this work extends beyond OTC derivatives and
is applicable to understanding the temporal semantics of a wide range of legal
documentation
Context modeling and constraints binding in web service business processes
Context awareness is a principle used in pervasive services
applications to enhance their exibility and adaptability to
changing conditions and dynamic environments. Ontologies
provide a suitable framework for context modeling and reasoning. We develop a context model for executable business processes { captured as an ontology for the web services domain. A web service description is attached to a service context profile, which is bound to the context ontology. Context instances can be generated dynamically at services runtime and are bound to context constraint services. Constraint services facilitate both setting up constraint properties and constraint checkers, which determine the dynamic validity of context instances. Data collectors focus on capturing context instances. Runtime integration of both constraint services and data collectors permit the business process to achieve dynamic business goals
Towards a Rule Interchange Language for the Web
This articles discusses rule languages that are needed for a a
full deployment of the SemanticWeb. First, it motivates the need for such
languages. Then, it presents ten theses addressing (1) the rule and/or
logic languages needed on the Web, (2) data and data processing, (3)
semantics, and (4) engineering and rendering issues. Finally, it discusses
two options that might be chosen in designing a Rule Interchange Format
for the Web
