Immiscible WAG injection: a core-scale investigation of operational parameters impacts

    Get PDF
Water Alternating Gas (WAG) injection, commonly used in light to medium crude oil reservoirs, is a well-established technique for enhanced oil recovery combining the effects of two conventional oil recovery processes - water injection and gas injection. Immiscible water alternating gas (IWAG) injection is considered as an appropriate injection type dependent on economical and productive aspects. During the IWAG process, injected gas and oil are always in separate phases due to low-pressure maintenance, and it takes advantages in improving the stability displacement front in the macroscopic sweep as well as enhancing microscopic sweep in narrow pores. In order to check the optimum operational condition in which to apply IWAG injection at the field-scale, this injection process is usually tested as a core-flooding experiment, which is time-consuming and expensive. In this research, a model of core-scale IWAG injection is introduced with validation by Double Displacement Process (DDP) experimental data from previous research. Response Surface Methodology (RSM) with CCD design is used to investigate the impact of five operational parameters on the volume of oil recovery. Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) is employed to determine the optimum combination of operational parameters to achieve the highest oil recovery factor for each operation scenario. The results indicate that all the main operational parameters, including timing, ratio, flow rate, slug size, and sequence, are significant for the response surface model. The PSO models reach good convergent results, with the volume of oil recovery for each case as 0.613, 0.650, and 0.666 pore volume. The performance of optimum IWAG injection is significantly better than only water-flooding or gas injection, with results approximately 5% higher than water-flooding, similar to double displacement process (DDP), and approximately 20% better than gas injection for the same operational conditions. These optimization tools are recommended for further research of WAG injection, both the experimental and simulation processes

    Get PDF
The Large Space Simulator at the European Space Research and Technology Center (ESTEC) has been recently equipped with a motion simulator capable of handling test items of 5 tons mass and having a volume of 7m in diameter and a length of 7m. The motion simulator has a modular set-up. It consists of a spinbox as a basic unit on which the test article is mounted and which allows continuous rotation (spin) . This spinbox can be used in two operational configurations; the spin axis is vertical to 30 degrees when mounted on a gimbalstand; and the spin axis is horizontal when mounted on a turntable-yoke combination. The turntable provides rotation within plus or minus 90 degrees. This configuration allows one to bring a test article to all possible relative positions viv-a-vis the sun vector (which is horizontal in this case). The spinbox allows fast rotation between 1 to 6 rpm or slow rotation between 1 to 25 rotations per day as well as positioning within plus or minus 0.4 degrees accuracy

This work analyses how ternary blends of biodiesel, anhydrous and hydrous ethanol, and diesel, in different proportions, behave regarding fuel emissions and combustion parameters. The determination of their cetane number, using an ASTM-CFR cetane research engine is also investigated. The base fuels used were 99,9% pure anhydrous ethanol, commercial diesel, which contains 5% of biodiesel in volume, biodiesel from soybean oil, and hydrous ethanol with 7% of water, in volume. The fuel blends werespecified after a careful bibliography research. Five volume fractions of biodiesel (5, 10, 20, 60 and 100%, in volume) and four of ethanol (0, 5, 8 and 15%, also in volume) were used in this study. All blends have endured a mixture stability test prior to being burned, the ones with clear visual phase separation being eventually rejected. The results for the cetane number presented a clear decrease in its value as ethanol was added. Some blends with high ethanol content failed to provide the minimum cetane number for use in compression ignition engines according to the present Brazilian regulations. Concerning the emissions tests, carbon dioxide emissions showed a decreasing trend as the quantity of added ethanol raised. Carbon monoxide emissions, however, showed the opposite trend. The nitrogen oxides emissions presented an increase as more biodiesel was added to the blend. The conclusions as to the impact of changing ethanol’s volume in the blends were discussed taking in consideration important operational remarks. A final analysis was proposed in order to compare anhydrous and hydrous ethanol. A clear reduction in nitrogen oxides and carbon dioxide emissions was observed, with an almost identical value for the carbon monoxide emissions. Cetane number for the hydrous ethanol blend, however, suffered a decrease compared to the same blend with anhydrous ethanol

Two cycles breeding program of Acacia mangium was practiced by Center for Forest Biotechnology and Tree Improvement Research. Although improved seed from the breeding program have been used in operational plantation, the real amount of gains in productivity was not verified together yet. This study was aimed to observe realized genetic gain and projected increase in stand volume from the two cycles breeding of A. mangium, and to discuss the implications on plantation productivity and sustainable forestry in Indonesia. Improved seed from first and second-generation seed orchard were tested together with an unimproved seed in genetic gain trial in West Java, with spacing of 3 x 3 m. Measurements were done at three years ages for height, dbh, and stem volume. Realized genetic gain was calculated as the percentage increase of improved seed over the unimproved one. Results of study showed that improved seed performed better growth than the unimproved with realized gain of 5-24% (height), 3-44% (dbh) and 11-90% (stem volume). Improved seed from second-generation outperformed that from the first-generation, with an improvement of 6-16% (height), 3-26% (dbh) and 20-53% (stem volume). Genetic gains increased with increasing ages for height, but it tended to decrease for dbh and stem volume. At given site and silvicultural practices, projected increase in stand volume at 8 years rotation reached 290-325 m3/ha, which is equal to 30-50% of gains. The uses of high genetically improved seed, in combination with intensive silviculture, would provide significant impacts on plantation productivity and sustainable forestry in Indonesia

ISCCP reduced resolution satellite radiance data

    Get PDF
The International Satellite Cloud Climatology Project (ISCCP) is the first active project of the World Climate Research Program. It is a multinational data collection project focused on collecting a data set that will improve the ability to predict and/or simulate the radiative effects of clouds on climate. For specified cloud parameters, the goals are to archieve values for 3-hour periods over the whole globe for 5 years at 30 km resolution. The task of collecting and processing radiance data from both geosynchronous and polar orbiting satellites began in July 1983. A diagram was shown illustrating the flow of data from the transmitting satellites to the various receiving institutions that handle it. The various stages of processing were then explained in detail, emphasizing Level B3-normalized, reformatted, reduced raw satellite data. The reduction of data by sampling is an essential step in the flow. By the time the ISCCP data reaches the Global Processing Center at Goddard Institute for Space Studies (GISS), the volume has been reduced by a factor of 1000. The Pilot Climate Data System (PLDS) will provide access to the ISCCP data set. It should prove to be one of the cleanest satellite data sets because it will have been through three filters--that of the operational agency, the Global Processing Center, and the PCDS. The ISCCP data set also includes other correlative data sets delivered in compatible format
