Motion Detecting Method And Device
In some embodiments, a motion detecting device is configured to detect whether one or more movement events have occurred. The motion detecting device can include: (a) a processing module configured to run on a computational unit; and (b) a sensing device having: (1) one or more pressure sensors configured to provide two or more pressure measurements; and (2) a transmitter electrically coupled to the one or more pressure sensors and configured to transmit the two or more pressure measurements to the computational unit. The processing module is configured to use the two or more pressure measurements to determine whether the one or more movement events have occurred. The sensing device can be configured to be placed in at least one of ductwork of a heating, ventilation, and air conditioning system or an air handler of the heating, ventilation, and air conditioning system. Other embodiments are disclosed.Georgia Tech Research Corporatio
Assistive robotic device: evaluation of intelligent algorithms
Assistive robotic devices can be used to help people with upper body
disabilities gaining more autonomy in their daily life. Although basic motions
such as positioning and orienting an assistive robot gripper in space allow
performance of many tasks, it might be time consuming and tedious to perform
more complex tasks. To overcome these difficulties, improvements can be
implemented at different levels, such as mechanical design, control interfaces
and intelligent control algorithms. In order to guide the design of solutions,
it is important to assess the impact and potential of different innovations.
This paper thus presents the evaluation of three intelligent algorithms aiming
to improve the performance of the JACO robotic arm (Kinova Robotics). The
evaluated algorithms are 'preset position', 'fluidity filter' and 'drinking
mode'. The algorithm evaluation was performed with 14 motorized wheelchair's
users and showed a statistically significant improvement of the robot's
performance.Comment: 4 page
Advanced emergency openings for commercial aircraft
Explosively actuated openings in composite panels are proposed to enhance passenger survivability within commercial aircraft by providing improvements in emergency openings, fuselage venting, and fuel dump. The concept is to embed a tiny, highly stable explosive cord in the periphery of a load-carrying composite panel; on initiation of the cord, the panel is fractured to create a well-defined opening. The panel would be installed in the sides of the fuselage for passenger egress, in the top of the fuselage for smoke venting, and in the bottoms of the fuel cells for fuel dump. Described are the concerns with the use of explosive systems, safety improvements, advantages, experimental results, and recommended approach to gain acceptance and develop this concept
