    Toward Free and Open Source Film Projection for Digital Cinema

    International audienceCinema industry has chosen Digital Cinema Package (DCP) as encoding format for the distribution of digital films. DCP uses JPEG2000 for video compression. An efficient implementation of coding and decoding for this format is complex, however. Currently deployed equipment is expensive and has high maintenance costs, preventing art-house cinema theaters from acquiring it. Therefore, we conduct this research activity in cooperation with Utopia cinemas, a group of art-house cinemas, whose main requirement (besides functional ones) is to provide Free and Open Source Software (FOSS). This paper presents a solution that achieves real-time JPEG2000 decoding and DCP presentation based on widespread open source multimedia tools, namely VLC and libavcodec library. We present the improvements that were made in VLC to support the DCP packaging format, as well as details on JPEG2000 decoding inside libavcodec (optimization and lossy decoding).     The project is about integrating the SMS function with a website based system. The idea for the project started by identifying the problems that always faced by students in University Technology ofPETRONAS when receiving parcels. Usually the parcels will be sent straight to UTP by the courier service provider like Pos Laju, DHL, FedEx and etc. the parcels then will be kept in the main office where every parcel information will be recorded. Parcels for students will be sent to Lembaran Residential Office for them to be collected by the recipients. The problem comes up when students need to check the list of recipient's names on the board in front of Lembaran Residential Office. The objective of this project is to provide an integrated system for admin and general users which are staffs and students. It makes the work of checking on their parcels arrival easier and faster. Furthermore, it will eliminate the need to re-type the parcels information, first in the main office and second in Lembaran Residential Office. One more major function is to include the SMS functionality in order to alert the recipients. It enable user to receive the news on their parcel arrival on time. The methodology used is waterfall model. The system has been developed based on the six step of system development life cycle those are planning, analysis, design, develop, integration and test, and lastly operation and maintenance. If one stage fails then it will be go back to previous stage. The end of the project it hope that the objective will be achieved whereas the system can view the record of general user online from their PC, while admin may use admin privileges on the information and also may use the SMS functionality

    Studio della cinetica delle proteine tramite labeling metabolico con 2H2O

    La comprensione della struttura del proteoma degli esseri viventi si basa sull’osservazione della dinamica delle proteine, per la quale si sono incontrati molti ostacoli in passato soprattutto a causa delle difficoltà nella raccolta e nell’analisi dei campioni. Queste sono state superate grazie all’impiego di 2H2O, o acqua pesante, come marcatore dei processi metabolici. L’acqua pesante è un composto sicuro per gli esseri viventi e ha caratteristiche chimico-fisiche che ne permettono l’utilizzo per diversi scopi. Tuttavia durante le prime fasi di questi studi, l’incompletezza dei dati raccolti dai ricercatori e l’inadeguatezza degli strumenti di analisi è stata di ostacolo alla diffusione di tale tipologia di marcatura metabolica. In questo tipo di studi, le tecniche di misura maggiormente impiegate si basano sulla spettrometria di massa: questa tecnica permette di identificare e distinguere i composti marcati dagli analoghi non marcati misurando il diverso valore di massa su carica che li caratterizza, in questo modo è possibile monitorare le variazioni nella concentrazione delle proteine marcate all’interno dei fluidi biologici in esame. L’avvento del World Wide Web negli anni Novanta del secolo scorso ha permesso ai ricercatori di condividere i risultati delle analisi, nonché sviluppare software per l’elaborazione dei dati adattabili alle esigenze di ciascun esperimento. Nonostante si siano raggiunte alte prestazioni computazionali, la bioinformatica è un settore in rapido sviluppo che mira a migliorare e ampliare l’offerta di strumenti di analisi coinvolgendo un sempre più vasto gruppo di ricercatori. Il perfezionamento della tecnica di marcatura metabolica con 2H2O e dei relativi strumenti di analisi ne permette il diffuso utilizzo in ambito medico-diagnostico soprattutto in caso di patologie difficilmente osservabili con le tradizionali tecniche come, per esempio, il morbo di Parkinson e la malattia di Alzheimer, per le quali non esistono ancora tecniche di diagnosi precoce affidabili. Grazie all’impiego del labeling metabolico negli studi sulle malattie neurodegenerative, è stato possibile mettere in relazione la comparsa di queste patologie e il comportamento anomalo delle proteine osservate nel fluido cerebrospinale.
