PPF - A Parallel Particle Filtering Library
We present the parallel particle filtering (PPF) software library, which
enables hybrid shared-memory/distributed-memory parallelization of particle
filtering (PF) algorithms combining the Message Passing Interface (MPI) with
multithreading for multi-level parallelism. The library is implemented in Java
and relies on OpenMPI's Java bindings for inter-process communication. It
includes dynamic load balancing, multi-thread balancing, and several
algorithmic improvements for PF, such as input-space domain decomposition. The
PPF library hides the difficulties of efficient parallel programming of PF
algorithms and provides application developers with the necessary tools for
parallel implementation of PF methods. We demonstrate the capabilities of the
PPF library using two distributed PF algorithms in two scenarios with different
numbers of particles. The PPF library runs a 38 million particle problem,
corresponding to more than 1.86 GB of particle data, on 192 cores with 67%
parallel efficiency. To the best of our knowledge, the PPF library is the first

Generating and auto-tuning parallel stencil codes
In this thesis, we present a software framework, Patus, which generates high performance stencil codes for different types of hardware platforms, including current multicore CPU and graphics processing unit architectures. The ultimate goals of the framework are productivity, portability (of both the code and performance), and achieving a high performance on the target platform.
A stencil computation updates every grid point in a structured grid based on the values of its neighboring points. This class of computations occurs frequently in scientific and general purpose computing (e.g., in partial differential equation solvers or in image processing), justifying the focus on this kind of computation.
The proposed key ingredients to achieve the goals of productivity, portability, and performance are domain specific languages (DSLs) and the auto-tuning methodology.
The Patus stencil specification DSL allows the programmer to express a stencil computation in a concise way independently of hardware architecture-specific details. Thus, it increases the programmer productivity by disburdening her or him of low level programming model issues and of manually applying hardware platform-specific
code optimization techniques. The use of domain specific languages also implies code reusability: once implemented, the same stencil specification can be reused on different
hardware platforms, i.e., the specification code is portable across hardware architectures. Constructing the language to be geared towards a special purpose makes it amenable to more aggressive optimizations and therefore to potentially higher performance.
Auto-tuning provides performance and performance portability by automated adaptation of implementation-specific parameters to the characteristics of the hardware on which the code will run. By automating the process of parameter tuning — which essentially amounts to solving an integer programming problem in which the objective function is the number representing the code's performance as a function of the parameter configuration, — the system can also be used more productively than if the programmer had to fine-tune the code manually.
We show performance results for a variety of stencils, for which Patus was used to generate the corresponding implementations. The selection includes stencils taken from two real-world applications: a simulation of the temperature within the human body during hyperthermia cancer treatment and a seismic application. These examples demonstrate the framework's flexibility and ability to produce high performance code
Scheduling Dynamic OpenMP Applications over Multicore Architectures
International audienceApproaching the theoretical performance of hierarchical multicore machines requires a very careful distribution of threads and data among the underlying non-uniform architecture in order to minimize cache misses and NUMA penalties. While it is acknowledged that OpenMP can enhance the quality of thread scheduling on such architectures in a portable way, by transmitting precious information about the affinities between threads and data to the underlying runtime system, most OpenMP runtime systems are actually unable to efficiently support highly irregular, massively parallel applications on NUMA machines. In this paper, we present a thread scheduling policy suited to the execution of OpenMP programs featuring irregular and massive nested parallelism over hierarchical architectures. Our policy enforces a distribution of threads that maximizes the proximity of threads belonging to the same parallel section, and uses a NUMA-aware work stealing strategy when load balancing is needed. It has been developed as a plug-in to the ForestGOMP OpenMP platform. We demonstrate the efficiency of our approach with a highly irregular recursive OpenMP program resulting from the generic parallelization of a surface reconstruction application. We achieve a speedup of 14 on a 16-core machine with no application-level optimization
GPGPU for Difficult Black-box Problems
AbstractDifficult black-box problems arise in many scientific and industrial areas. In this paper, efficient use of a hardware accelerator to implement dedicated solvers for such problems is discussed and studied based on an example of Golomb Ruler problem. The actual solution of the problem is shown based on evolutionary and memetic algorithms accelerated on GPGPU. The presented results prove that GPGPU outperforms CPU in some memetic algorithms which can be used as a part of hybrid algorithm of finding near optimal solutions of Golomb Ruler problem. The presented research is a part of building heterogenous parallel algorithm for difficult black-box Golomb Ruler problem
